Bang your head, wake the dead.

Wow--Have to admit I never liked Quiet Riot, but in all the interviews
I saw of him, he always seemed like at heart he genuinely loved what he did, fame or no fame, money or no money.

R.I.P.

True story:

Journalist gets an interview appointment with DuBrow. Knocks on tour bus door parked in front of venue. Man answers and says "yes?" Journalist says she's supposed to interview DuBrow, and as she's saying this, realizes that the man is DuBrow himself.

DuBrow says, "hang on a moment, I'll go get him." Returns wearing a hairpiece.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Haha that's great. He had a great big shaggy head of hair (about 3 shades lighter than his natural hair color) on the VH1 "The Story Of Metal" specials that I was watching over the weekend. The weird thing is that he has a pretty high hairline even at the height of QR's fame, so what's the point?

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

There was a point in the early 90s when Quiet Riot would play at your house or birthday party for something like $1500. Maybe it was less.

I still spin Metal Health. It was highly formative for me like Thriller and Freedom of Choice. Wow there used to be good music on the radio.

These were the guys who discovered Randy Rhoads too. He was their original guitarist before Ozzy stole him.

Hope DuBrow's death spikes up sales of their back catalog and makes Slade some more $$!

RIP.

The rumour I heard was $500!

Darin, Monday, 26 November 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Re: the QR back catalog, how are those Japan-only LPs recorded with Rhoads? With QR's breakout in the aftermath of RR's death, 1983 seemed like a perfect time for a cash-in US (re)issue program.

drench, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

You know I believe it was $500 but inflation makes my mind reel at that low figure. I am pretty much positive that you're right.

I remember some punk rock girl I met on tour telling me that they had played in her back yard. That's fucking rad.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:47 (eighteen years ago)

That was only if they got top billing over the puppet show.

RIP

RIP.

Unfortunately, the members of Quiet Riot don't make any money on things like Metal Health. They were handled by Pasha/Spencer Proffer and were in a contract which signed away their publishing to the label and managers. If they make anything from the bestseller, I'd estimate it as miniscule. It's one of the reasons why, like many from the time, they resorted to making live re-recordings of all their old music.

Gorge, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

Right. But that does not keep Slade (the original songwriters of Cum on Feel the Noize and Mama Weer All Crazy Now) from getting paid!

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

Natch. Quiet Riot were responsible for Slade getting back into the States in the mid-80's. Album was Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply, followed by another and some minor success later on MTV.

Gorge, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

"Run Runaway" was one of my first prized singles.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

Damn - Quiet Riot was the first concert I ever went to. Keel were the openers. This was right after "The Wild and the Young" was a minor hit.

The Rhodes-era QR albums aren't the holy grail or anything, and paying any amount of money on a bootleg of them would be a waste. They're out there in the p2p aether, though, if you care to look.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

Shit! I always spell Rhoads wrong.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

>>This was right after "The Wild and the Young" was a minor hit.

That was after Kevin Dubrow was kicked out. Paul Shortino was the singer for the album with that single. He'd later be less famous in Rough Cutt, a RJ & Wendy Dio discovery, two albums reissued on Wounded Bird.

True dat. I seem to remember a half decent cover of "Glad All Over" and not much more.

Darin, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

x-post

No, DuBrow was still around in 1986 when QRIII was released and sang on the album (the one with "The Wild and the Young" on it). It was the album directly after that one that Shortino was hired (and that album, just titled QR, was patently awful).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 07:48 (eighteen years ago)

I remember buying Metal Health and even a used copy of the follow-up LP (was it Condition Critical?), which featured -- somewhat amazingly -- another Slade cover (hey, if something works -- stick with it), but would never categorize m'self as a fan. Still, sad.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone mentioned that Metal Health was the album that finally knocked Thriller out of the #1 spot in 1983?

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

you just did. Bang your head.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

>>No, DuBrow was still around in 1986 when QRIII

Righto. My error. I had that and the next one, was confusing the two. Should have went and checked.

Gorge, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

I played four tracks of Metal Health at my Dj night last night. Made a short speech to the crowd. They were jovial but reverent.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Saw Quiet Riot at the dimly lit Buzzsaw Tavern in Albany, Oregon, back in the '90s. Today the Buzzsaw's an empty lot; now we've gone and lost Kevin too. Damn.

Terrible Cold, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

No shit! The Buzzsaw. I grew up in Corvallis, right next door.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

LA Times story with more information, such as it is

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, Nate Carson of Moon Patrol/Bishops of Battle?

Terrible Cold, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

If you want to go back to the mid-late 90s, that's me!

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

Kinda weird reading about "toxicology tests" and whatnot, considering he used to drink iced tea onstage out of a whiskey bottle - felt he had to present some kind of rock 'n roll credibility image.

RIP

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

well, so much for all the clean living.

sad though.
