IT'S THE SONIC YOUTH EPICS POLL

my somewhat abritrary criteria for inclusion: tracks from proper albums (w/ vocals) over 7 minutes long. i mean i think "Titanium Expose" is more epic than "Total Trash," but i'm just gonna stick with those rules for the sake of simplicity.

i'm voting in terms of best (my opinion: "Rain On Tin"), not most epic (which would be, I guess, "Trilogy" or "Diamond Sea"). "'Cross The Breeze" and "Wildflower Soul" and "Free City Rhymes" are pretty awesome, too.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Great poll idea!

"Total Trash" would once have been my pick, but, wow, "I Love You, Golden Blue" is blue-blue-electric blue, certainly my favorite Kim moment of the last decade.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

expressway for me.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

"I Love Her All The Time" is my favorite SY song, period ("Shadow Of A Doubt" is #2).

unperson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

karen revisited

though the actual "song" part isnt 7 minutes

ciderpress, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

no Confusion is Sex = no vote

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

mote.. probably one of my top three SY tracks

electricsound, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

I still dig that riff in Stones.

W4LTER, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

DIAMOND SEA, SUCKERS.

ian, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Diamond Sea IS most epic/most..err.. best.

MRZBW, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

Mote, though in fairness I tend to skip to the next track after the long freakout bit kicks in.

Trayce, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

(So for epicness, Expressway would get my vote)

Trayce, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

ts: sonic youth epics vs. yes epics

kamerad, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

I love "The Diamond Sea" so so so so so much.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

I Love You Golden Blue is prettay. But not very epique.

W4LTER, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

Either "Diamond Sea" or "Cross the Breeze" for me.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

The Sprawl.

Bill in Chicago, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

I've now made an Itunes playlist of these and will study before voting. But it'll probably be "Cross the Breeze".

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

neat idea!

Went with Karen Koltrane.

da croupier, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

CROSS DA BREEZ

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

if "Teenage Riot" were two seconds longer it would make the cut. and it definitely feels more epic than the tracks from that album that actually do make it (albeit in a totally different way)

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

'sympathy for the strawberry' just over 'diamond sea' for me.

strgn, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

Wildflower Soul. Would have fit right in on Daydream Nation.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

easy. "i love her all the time".

stirmonster, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

Can the Sonic Death tape be considered one continuous epic?

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

if "Teenage Riot" were two seconds longer it would make the cut. and it definitely feels more epic than the tracks from that album that actually do make it (albeit in a totally different way)

haha part of the reason I used 7 minutes as the cutoff is because I totally didn't want "Teenage Riot" in consideration (both because I don't think of it as very epic, and because it would be an easy answer for a lot of people).

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

"Karen Revisited", when Ranaldo starts yelling "Karen" after the "tell me why I care" trails off, with the screaming guitar in the background, it's my favorite Sonic Youth moment of them all.

Euler, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

xpost: I dunno... like I said, "Teenage Riot" isn't really epic in the same way as those other tracks, but every time I listen to it, it definitely feels like something's happening. but then, maybe it's just a great opener that playfully hints at the epic-ness that lies ahead.

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

Daydream Nation is the worst of their indie era.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

keep yr shirt on, dude

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

The Diamond Sea

Didn't they play super-extendo versions of it live too? 40+ minutes of glorious guitar wankery. Wonderful. Makes me think I should track down some live bootlegs...

krakow, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm. When is the Bob Dylan epics poll?

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

I think of Teenage Riot as pretty epic! It takes ages to get going (in a good way)

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

Trilogy doesn't count for me; it's three different songs, after all. That being the case, "Karen Koltrane" remains my fave SY gal.

JN$OT, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the "Hyperstation" section of Trilogy alone is over 7 minutes long, so you can think of it that way if you want to.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, Hyperstation for me

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Expressway, esp. on vinyl w/lock groove

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

what euler said - karen revisited
expressway, diamond sea, hyperstation and sympathy are all fucking awesome too

sleep, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

I've never been comfortable with "Trilogy" as one track. So "The Sprawl" it is.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

expressway uh duhr

69, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Sympathy For The Strawberry

Marty Innerlogic, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

how I'd rank these:

Rain on Tin
Wildflower Soul
'Cross the Breeze
Expressway to Yr. Skull
Mote
Free City Rhymes
Karen Revisited
Washing Machine
Dripping Dream
The Sprawl
Stones
Karen Koltrane
I Love Her All the Time
NYC Ghosts & Flowers
Trilogy
The Diamond Sea
I Love You Golden Blue
Female Mechanic Now on Duty
Total Trash
Hits of Sunshine (For Allen Ginsberg)
Sympathy for the Strawberry

although that's just based on studio recordings, some of my least favorites (Hits Of Sunshine, I Love Her, Female Mechanic, NYC Ghosts) are way better live. most my favorites are also better live mostly, too.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

voted for expressway, but i can get behind these results

stephen, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

That seemed the obvious winner.

I know, right?, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

Yes but I didn't think those two would be that alone at the top.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Methinks we should revisit this poll without the top two choices.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 19 June 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

And adding "Massage the History".
