the BLACK SABBATH Epics poll

Obviously this quits after 1983 (why post entries that won't get votes). Also, I used 7 minutes as the cutoff, but let "Heaven and Hell" squeak in even though it's two seconds short because it is obviously quite epic. Also didn't count all the songs they cram into one track listing on the first record because for my money, N.I.B. is one song, not one quarter of a song. Arguments can begin below.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
War Pigs 17
Wheels of Confusion 10
Heaven and Hell 3
Megalomania 2
The Writ 2
The Sign of the Southern Cross 2
Warning 0
Dirty Women 0

BTW, if the mod wants to re-title this to be more streamlined like the other ALL CAPS epics polls, please be my guest.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

My first ever thread and no love. sniffle.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

AS THE WAR MACHINE KEEPTS TURNING
O LORD YEAH!

durndurndurn-a dern dern derrn derrn durn-a

and then I can't remember what happens & my mind just switches to the solo from "Court of he Crimson King."

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

That's when Bill Ward starts rolling furiously...

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

"Megalomania" is more epic--I think?--so that gets my vote, but I sure do love me some "War Pigs," and "The Writ," too. And what about "Wheels of Confusion"? Grrrrr!

JN$OT, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of deaths construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds, oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has sturck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
All right now!

I kick total ass at this on Guitar Hero. Fear my G-Hero SKILLZ.

Mordechai Shinefield, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

How could it be anything apart from "War Pigs"? Be serious.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

It's the only one that's been overplayed, so that works against it significantly.

Anyway, I voted for "The Writ", but I (like Ozzy) Love Them All.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

The inarguable fact that "War Pigs" is overplayed isn't the song's fault.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

Does that mean you like Tool too? I might be able to like them if I felt like I could stand to ever hear them again...

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

Was never really a fan.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, I never want to hear fuckin' "Stairway to Heaven" again either, but that doesn't render it a shit song.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with you about both songs. But I still would not put "War Pigs" on the stereo at my house unless it was some sort of academic illustration.

So my vote goes to the epic song I'd most like to rock out to.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

fair enough

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

It's "War Pigs" for me with "Wheels of Confusion" a close 2nd. I can't actually imagine a point where I didn't enjoy hearing "War Pigs" - it's well known, but as far as "overplayed" goes, it's hardly "Stairway." (Which I also still enjoy though, I may have a stronger stomach for endless repetition than other people.)

J0hn D., Tuesday, 27 November 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

fucken ilm won't let me post the same post twice in order to maek funny repetition joke, I have been denied my rightful lulz

J0hn D., Tuesday, 27 November 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

It's impossible for a song as awesome as War Pigs to be overplayed. Wheels of Confusion is so mind-bending it's hard to describe. Close third: Sign of the Southern Cross.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Dio was kinda my first Sabbath singer so I don't care and I'm voting for "Heaven and Hell".

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

Next time just make a minor punctuation change, J0hn!

I vote for "Tomorrow's Dream/The Straightener". (The inclusion of hidden-title sub-songs like "Luke's Wall" clearly renders the songs epic-er.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

"Megalomania" for me please. Oooh what a nutty ass song (and album).

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

For me it's really all about the song "Black Sabbath" (which is as epic as any piece of music from Beethoven to present). But it's in the 6 minute range and if I opened that floodgate, we'd have a third of their Ozzy-era catalog on this list.

It was fun to see it distilled this far. We lost Master of Reality entirely. No "Into the Void"!

Anyway, I knew everyone had an opinion. And as for "War Pigs", I'm not sick of it. I just don't want to play it on purpose. I still crank up the radio when it comes on. It's lost some freshness, but not power.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

someone start a FAITH NO MORE Epic(s) poll

Jordan, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

Someone did.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

"War Pigs" for me.

Euler, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

How many of the "War Pigs" voters own Sabotage and beyond?

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

i'm voting "sign of the southern cross" just so someone does

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

I own everything up through Mob Rules, for whatever that's worth.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

And Mob Rules fucking...er.....RULES!

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

I like Born Again better than any of the Dio records. But I own them all they way up through Forbidden and I even like "Psychoman". So don't blame me.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 29 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

nate I will rep for fuckin' never say die so don't even start, but I still voted war pigs

J0hn D., Thursday, 29 November 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

1) war pigz alltime respeck blood diamonds etc
2) megalomania
3) zero the her0

Edward III, Thursday, 29 November 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

Sounds legit to me John.

:)

Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 November 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

Off topic, but deciding to listen to "Stairway to Heaven" as a Brit-folk tune rather than rawk anthem opened new doors on the song for me. If anyone's really that tired of "War Pigs," just pretend it's freak folk or something.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 29 November 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

Lonely is the Word

calstars, Thursday, 29 November 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Nice post about Mob Rules Alex. Ever heard the version on the Live at Hammersmith cd Rhino put out earlier this year? It rocks about as hard as anything I've ever heard. Simply unbelievable.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

Must check that out! Cheers, Bill.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Can't say I'm surprised but I still wouldn't rate "War Pigs" as being significantly more epic than any other track on this list. They are all equally fantastic to me.

Nate Carson, Friday, 30 November 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

Clearly, more people need to hear Sabotage.

JN$OT, Friday, 30 November 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

The live version of "Megalomania" on Past Lives is really cool too. Supposedly one of the only live versions of that songs that exists... (thought that could be marketing hype)

Nate Carson, Friday, 30 November 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

Ozzy blows it at the end of that version. Really bad, I think his voice goes out. The band is searing though.

Bill Magill, Friday, 30 November 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

(I've heard Sabotage and unfortunately I don't much like either epic. Hole In The Sky & Symptom of the Universe yes, but otherwise don't really care for it. I didn't vote in this poll but probably would have gone for War Pigs anyway. Sorry)

Colonel Poo, Friday, 30 November 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

"Ozzy blows it at the end of that version.

But, but, Ozzy ALWAYS blows it!
