Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

No "Levon", no credibility.

dell, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

In lieu of that one, can't decide between "Rocket Man" and "Your Song"...Your Song will probably win out for me, though. I can make it through Rocket Man without getting misted up.

dell, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. always loved that one (and the album).

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:54 (eighteen years ago)

I have been trying to get into that album lately, as well as some of his others, but the non-hits just don't really do anything for me.

dell, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

really? I really liked the non-singles on that album...towards the middle it loses a LIIIIIIIIITTLE steam, but I think it holds up.

course NOTHING beats Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I mean, I'll give it some further attention, but so far, nawp. Funeral for a Friend sounds like a Jim Steinman abortion, which is actually sort of a compliment, I guess...but, I dunno, probably I just have not been in the right mood or something.

dell, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

It's FAR from the best song, but the 5 year old sure me loved Crocodile Rock.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

Easy for me, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Nothing against the others, but it seems GYBR has become one of my favorite songs over the years!

Billy Pilgrim, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

What Billy Pilgrim said.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

i'm having a hard time choosing b/w "goodbye yellow brick road" and "daniel," both of which are the prototypical elton john songs AFAIC. even decades of overplay hasn't ruined either one for me.

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

WINNAR

Tape Store, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, "bennie & the jets" deserves some love too -- as one of the better results from elton's & bernie's brief obsession w/ ziggy-era bowie.

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

"Honky Cat"

Vol. 2 >>>>> this claptrap.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

yea Take me to the pilot is teh win

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

Naw, it's all about "Tiny Dancer".

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

was that playing on that fateful day in the commode?

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

Best thing Elton's ever done

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

"Border Song" b/c I haven't heard it in a while. What a brilliant record. "Candle in the Wind" was not on the original U.S. issue of this which made it even better.

Mark Rich@rdson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 07:33 (eighteen years ago)

"Bennie and the Jets"

snoball, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

Aretha's cover of "Border Song" is marvelous.

Voted for "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

"Bennie" just over "Rocket Man." (Although "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" really is the best song the Stones didn't cut between Exile and Some Girls.)

JN$OT, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

Toss up between "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Bennie & the Jest" --- and yes, I'm aware that these choices are hackneyed cliches, but c'est la guerre.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Jets

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

"Border Song."

ellaguru, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

When I just think about "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," I can practically feel the sand in my flip-flops. (I associate a lot of those 70s Elton John songs--and a lot of 70s hits in general, for that matter--with being down the shore.)

He was so great then. It's a shame I don't own anything by him (well, except for some vinyl in my closet).

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the 4 year old me sure loved me some CROCODILE ROCK.
but GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD all the way here.

that '...volume two' poll (with the album where he's dressed up as a cricketer) should prove interesting.

"Goodbye" over "Rocket Man," but just barely.

pgwp, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Electric boots, mohair suit, etc.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", but I hope "Crocodile Rock" and "Daniel" get some love.

Euler, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

"yellow brick road" and "rocket man" are a close match for best, but props to "Border Song" for sounding the most like the stuff on Tumbleweed Connection - easily my favorite Elton record.

will, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

b&tj = pretty awesome, too.

will, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

BATJ, hands down

iago g., Tuesday, 27 November 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

would have voted for Crocodile Rock

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 10 December 2007 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

four years pass...

After ages of thinking that I hated "Crocodile Rock," I'm sort of warming up to it. The falsetto part still grates a bit but actually paying attention to the lyrics makes me realize it's less a straight up Showaddywaddy kind of good-old-days thing, and closer to a "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" thing where those days are gone and never coming back. Not the deepest concept either but it appeals to me and makes the angry edge to the rock-y bits make more sense.
