Hairy Canadian pop schmaltz sex God/horrible lyricist or progressive rock/ jazz fusion sculptor of lush synth- drenched mini symphonies?

Both!

Check out 1975's "Storm at Sunup," 1976's "The Gist of the Gemini" (produced by Geoff Emerick) and 1977's Pauper in Paradise (made with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra)

Vannelli's brother Joe was the guy playing all those thick and ethereal synths BTW.

Plus -- in 1984 Vanelli went new wave crazy with "Black Cars," an album that sounds like there's nothing on it but drum machines and Yamaha DX7's.

I did say he was/is "hairy."

I didn't know anybody had the actual footage from his nasty "werewolf on stage" incident from the late 70s though.

In 1985, you were either a Black Cars person or a Knee Deep in the Hoopla person.

Hurts to Be in Love >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sara

Well-paid San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito is a fan.

That has to be a Detroit thing, then, because Geno was NOWHERE out here on the radio, at least in my neck of the woods.

"People Gotta Move" was way ahead of its time.

...and ahead of everything else I've ever heard by him. I was about to vote for it until I realized this isn't a poll.

that eugene levy clip is pretty great.

i've never heard anything but Storm Before Sunup, but that's a GREAT album. i first heard Gettin High and was sold. the whole album is a mix of 70s soft rock and super funky, electric jazz. reminds me of some of my faves: Ben Sidran, Eugene McDaniels, Gil Scott. his singing is a bit over the top some (most) of the time, but overall it's a great record.
