I think I know... but maybe I'm forgetting something. And it's ultimately a subjective question, at least on the front end.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)
at an alleged 15 million, Highway to Hell
― bendy, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)
I thought Back in Black was their top seller?!
And by your own admission, couldn't it also be argued that Metallica is heavier than AC/DC? (I can't believe I just wrote that.)
― myopic_void, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)
"heavy" is a very subjective term. I never really considered AC/DC 'heavy' since they're more just rock 'n roll.
how many albums did Far Beyond Driven sell?
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)
(and please nobody read into the 'just rock 'n roll' comment it wasn't a dig)
Has to be the black album, no?
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)
(the slipknot debut was not multi-platinum)
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)
Back in Black is in the top ten, I think, but I don't think it's as heavy as Highway.
― bendy, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)
Sodom's "Agent Orange"?
― Øystein, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)
Do Sabbath have any multi-platinums? If so, it's that.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)
It's gotta be either Me Against the World or Wu-Tang Forever. (They're both multiplatinum in the US, I checked.)
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)
UH ZEPPELIN, PEOPLE!
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)
Never heard of 'em
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)
Nah. It's gotta be Paranoid! (unless Master of Reality has gone m/p, that is.)

Led Zeppelin Four and Back in Black probably win.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)
I would think a buncha quite heavy albums have managed to hit platinum in Germany (hence my Sodom suggestion, though I googled about a bit, and it turns out I was wrong: it only went platinum once)
Anyways, here's a database for American sales stats: http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php (for simplicity's sake, select "Multi-platinum" from the Award-dropdown)
So, uh, for the time being I'm tempted to say "Master of reality" or "Master of Puppets". Slipknot's debut IS 2x platinum. Maybe they'll really hit it out of the park if they call their next album "Master of hell"
― Øystein, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)
Master of Reality then. Can't get much heavier. Makes Master of Puppets and Back in Black sound like something from Dick's Picks.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)
NIN's The Downward Spiral has to be one of the noisiest!

And their followup, Iowa, is probably the only platinum record with blastbeats on it.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)
2x platinum after a ll? well then that settles it, Slipknot might be a shitty record but certainly heavier than any sabbath or ac/dc.
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)
I'm going with And Justice For All.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)
ahem. note I'm not saying best album, but didn't Far Beyond Driven go at least one platinum?
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 29 November 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)
"well then that settles it, Slipknot might be a shitty record but certainly heavier than any sabbath or ac/dc."

― hawth, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)
(both albums count as single platinum, if I understand these things correctly)
― hawth, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)
Wow, I'm actually quite surprised that Vulgar sold more, especially with how well FBD debuted.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)
TBH I don't really think of the 4th Zeppelin album as "heavy" per se.
― Sundar, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)
I don't suppose Osmium is multiplatinum, even after 37 years.

Pantera is not heavier than Metallica. Did the Slipknot record outsell Justice?
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 November 2007 09:38 (eighteen years ago)
Nevermind, it didn't.
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 November 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)
well, i guess the answer would be 'master of puppets', which is heavier in terms of sound and production if not in aggressive intent
― Charlie Howard, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)
...than '...and justice'
― Charlie Howard, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)
Master of Reality makes both of those sound like Deja Vu Vols. II and III.

Absofuckinglutely!

― Charlie Howard, Friday, 30 November 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)
as far as Pantera not being heavier than Metallica, it really depends on what you define as heavy. I'd consider them "heavier", but definitely not "better".
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 30 November 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)
plus Slipknot isn't heavy
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 30 November 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)
i thought slipknot was heavy?

I need to listen to Iowa again. I remember being surprised by the blastbeats when it came out, and thinking it might turn a whole generation of mall rockers on to the delights of Napalm Death et al. But it was never gonna happen, was it?
