Be Your Own Pet's young hellion Jemina Pearl has a new tattoo on her biceps: the girl from Friday the Thirteenth with a bloody hatchet in her forehead. Obviously, you do not mess with Pearl — and BYOP's riotously excellent Get Awkward is packed with reasons to cross the street when you see her coming. As on Be Your Own Pet's 2006 full-length debut, these Nashville skate-punk kids go for noisy hardcore blasts in the mode of Black Flag, SS Decontrol and the Germs. This time Pearl's scream is deeper and meaner, some songs have actual choruses, and Tony Alva look-alike Jonas Stein revs up some rockabilly guitar riffs — they must have been YouTubing a lot of X and Buzzcocks clips lately. But BYOP remain blissfully bored by the idea of lyrical or musical subtlety, which is why they're so perfect. They celebrate teen romance ("You're a Waste"), girl fights ("Bitches Leave"), mindless violence ("Zombie Graveyard Party") and trash TV (the Beyond the Valley of the Dolls tribute "The Kelly Affair"). Pearl sounds genuinely freaked out in the disconcerting "Creepy Crawl" ("I'm not the girl that I was before/Feel like I'm lying each time I walk through the door"). And for mature sophistication, there's "Food Fight!"

I'm more intrigued by the song titles than the description of the music (who can deny mindless violence, trash TV and girl fights?).

daniel it's just pretty great scuzz-punk. the riffs are catchy as shit and loud and the singer is pretty hilarious. also it will take you 30 mins to listen to the whole thing so why not

i'm short-changing pearl there. she's really funny but also writes some pretty poignant zeitgeisty (for someone my age at least) stuff

Pearl played up her personality too much for Universal suits on three removed "Get Awkward" tracks. They were rejected by Universal lawyers for being "too violent." Pearl sighed when recounting this circumstance.

"When I found out that the songs were going to get taken off, I was just like, 'Is there anybody I can talk to?' " Pearl said. "It's like, I don't even really know who these people are. There's no one you can talk to to try to argue your case. Other than that, Universal has been great. But I guess that's just what happens when you decide to have something to do with a major label. They're going to be scared of anything that's not completely cookie cutter."

The three tracks: "Black Hole", "Becky" (AKA the album's best track by a country mile!!!!) and "Blow Yr Mind"

This is my album of the year so far, which I am totally astonished by. It's just banger after banger though. Liking the "close your eyes and pull out three hardcore bands" journo stylings in the RS blurb as well

Yeah, unless you want to BREAK THE LAW, the only way to get these tracks (as far as I know) would be to drop $$$$ on the UK version.

Album of the year so far and that's extremely unfortunate about the missing tracks, because two of them are the best on the record.

im going to see them tonight open for she wants revenge, so at the ticketmaster booth i had to tell the woman that i wanted a ticket for she wants revenge and it was mortifying >_<

i've been listening to this more recently and i still don't love it at, at all really nor like the first one. i think jemina's retreated a bit as a lyricist, and tho this is a more fun record, i miss the emotional pull that songs like "love your shotgun" or "adventure" had on the first one

that said it's still a good sign for the future that they were able to kind of stretch the boundaries of their sound a little (handclaps on "kelly affair", strokesy riff on "what's your damage", more prominent vocals from the guys) w/o totally making a mess of the album, but i'm kind of looking forward to the time when they get out of party mode, and jemina gets out of the kind of defiant attitude she has on this album. i liked her better (tho still got so much <3) when she kind of admitted heartbreak and defeat on the first one

i like it pretty much the same as the first one - half of it is great, fun tunes, half sort of rushes by without me noticing. however, this means that the removal of two top tracks from the US version besically kills the album. i ended up returning my shitty US copy and used my connections* to get hold of a UK copy with the original tracklisting.

*(translation: asked my mum to send me a copy)

they were awz live tonight, played the riffs fast as fuck and you can't really hear jemina but every song was catchy and bouncy even the ones i don't like on record

Nashville's Be Your Own Pet are calling it quits. The band announced:

To all of our fans, we are sad to bring you the news that our upcoming shows in the UK are going to be our last as a band. We thank you for all your love and support these past few years. It's been a blast, but the time has come for the four of us to go our separate ways.

Two albums is about right for a band like this. Can't wait for the second Cheap Time.

There's nothing special about this track, "I Hate People," though. It's nice, and that's the most praise I can give it.

Oh, and Iggy should not be on this. Jemina's voice is wonderful; his, at least in this context, not so much.

Cautiously optimistic about this!

So they're doing three shows next week at SxSW, with some additional international festival dates lined up for this summer.

Finally got into them this past year (my top artist for 2022 on Spotify), so the whole possibility of something new from them (and how that would even work) is very exciting.

I also recently scored the pretty good Jemina solo album for a buck on eBay!

Now it looks like there's six SxSW shows next week, including an event for Creem magazine.

So they ended up doing seven shows last week at SxSW (one cut a little short due to Jemina barfing onstage), plus another gig in Nashville before they came. The setlist I saw didn't have much in the way of new material, but as these clips show, they really throw down on the old stuff.

The new record is really excellent.

^^I really like it too, although I'm a little burned out on the advance tracks, as I played them alot already (unfortunate byproduct of an extended rollout). Of the album cuts, gravitating most to the '70s RAWK of "Pleasure Seeker" and the 'Yeah Yeah Yeahs do "Psycho Killer"'-ness of "Rubberist".

Damn, late pass requested, but yeah this is really good and so much better than I expected.
