3. The Open Mind - Magic Potion

incredible 2-sider this one, 'cast a spell' is fantastic too. their album is ok but is nowhere near as good as this 45

electricsound, Friday, 30 November 2007 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

the album is great!

scott seward, Friday, 30 November 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

i never got into it so much, but the 45 is one of the best of the decade

electricsound, Friday, 30 November 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

i love the open mind album. i love their whole vibe. downer hard rock psych goodness.

scott seward, Friday, 30 November 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

i put the open mind album on the filthy 50 list i did for Decibel Magazine. similar stuff to this mojo comp. late 60's/early 70's hairiness and thud:

i would have like to have seen something by jerusalem here... 'frustration' in particular

electricsound, Friday, 30 November 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, jerusalem definitely. also orang-utang! i think they're english, anyway. maybe dark?

if i didn't have all of those albums already, i'd buy it. actually, where is that atomic rooster song from? title doesn't ring a bell.

Mojo do a fairly high "keepers" ratio with regard their free CDs.

Nothing like 50%, mind you, but then Uncut's ratio is something like 2% at the moment.

The move track, I had "Shazam" for a very long time, and it still amazes me with regard to "Don't make my baby blue" that they didn't get more props for creating (or at least shaping) heavy metal with that.

The leaf hound track was surprising, what with the album name and the descriptions, I'd expected hippie nonesense, but it's more Nuggets than heavy/trippy.

Was Pete Brown the Cream lyricist? And what the hell can "PIBLOKTOI" mean??

The critic John Mendelssohn (sp?) has often given "first/best heavy metal" status to the Move (particularly Shazam) over Sabbath or Zeppelin.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Well then the "critic" John Mendelwhatever should have his fucking card revoked and put in the loony bin.

The Blossom Toes albums were recently reisssued (Forced Exposure should have them), but aside from that one song (well, might be one or two others), that second album is sub-sub-Spinal Tap, too tedious to be funny, even. The first album is giddy schoolboys on the loose, also on Mother's little helpers, whirled around Swinging London by a wizardly orchestra, laughing up its starry sleeve at them, but they don't care, and good for them. Great list, Skot, thanks! Just printed it out.

that blossom toes album always made me think of a heavier steely dan. i don't know why.

yes! as for piblokto!, well:

Piblokto, Pibloktoq or Arctic hysteria is a condition exclusively appearing in Inuit societies living within the Arctic Circle. Appearing most prevalently in winter, it is considered to be a form of a culture-specific disorder.

Symptoms can include intense "hysteria" (screaming, uncontrolled wild behavior), depression, coprophagia, insensitivity to extreme cold (such as running around in the snow naked), echolalia (senseless repetition of overheard words), and more. This condition is most often seen in dogs and Eskimo women.

you sure you've got the right track there? that sounds more like what i'd expect from the second hand than leaf hound.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

Freelance Fiend, yeah that one.

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Don't make my baby blue"
One of my all-time favorite tracks.
I'd really love to have some non-Move Carl Wayne stuff. if it exists?

Mike Dixn, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 08:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure it's the least obscure track on there, but "Old Man Going" by the Pretty Things is off one of the greatest albums of all time and definitely presages Paranoid-style Black Sabbath by several years.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

Carl Wayne went very cababet after The Move:

"You're a star, you're a star
Lovely suit and a new guitar
And I know that youll go far, cuz you're a staaaarrrr"

that was him.

I also have some sort of recollection that he went all heavy/punk/angry more recently.

(He died not that long ago)

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 09:27 (eighteen years ago)

I need to getthis magazine.
