Does anyone else love recordings from this under-recognized jazz label, from the under-recognized-for-jazz 70s? My favorites:

Air - Air Song
Hamiet Bluiett - Im/possible To Keep
Arthur Blythe - The Grip, Metamorphosis
Chico Hamilton - Kings of Mali

I'm dying to find The Revolutionary Ensemble's "Manhattan Cycles" and Air's "Air Raid."

Manhattan Cycles pops up on ebay and ain't too expensive... less than twenty, i think. great record.
also kings of mali is excellent. don't know too many more.. am i right in thinking there's a cecil mcbee sextet record on india navigation?

There's a couple of McBees:

I love his playing on records like Alice Coltrane's "Journey Into..." and Music Inc., but I haven't heard him as a leader.

I haven't seen Manhattan Cycles start at less than 40 (too high for me)! I'll have to keep checking.

1043 Cecil McBee Alternate Spaces

That's the one I was thinking of. Search!
If I see a copy of Manhattan Cycles I'll revive this thread with da info. I could use a copy of the Rev. Ensemble's "The Psyche" honestly.

Aside: i always get India Navigation confused with Inner City.

Arnold Dreyblatt's "Nodal Excitation" isn't as good as some of his other records, but it is on this label and we have it in our collection at the library. We've also got Phil Niblock's "nothing to look at, just a record" which is looong trombone drones. I like that one a lot. That's all I've heard, though.

oh, is nodal excitation on india nav too??? i missed that on the list. that's a fun record. kind of bland, but pleasant enough for naptime.

Never heard of Arnold Dreyblatt or Phil Niblock. What's up with that second chart in the above link, anyway? All unfamiliar artists to me...

I love the two Blythe lps!! Seriously, 'Metamorphosis' was one of the first lps that really got me deeply interested in jazz. I remember clutching that record without about 10 or 15 others when freshman year I raided my college radio station for jazz LPs that look intersting. It actually took me years to track down 'The Grip' (station didn't have that one -- and this was way before it finally came out on that CD 2fer)

My pressing of Muhal Richards Abrams sounds TERRIBLE though. Avoid that one... try to find the Trio original. that's my experience anyway.

Usual Channels, that 2nd chart is so-called "modern classical", "20th century" or "minimalist" artists. curious about that Yoshi Wada .. never heard of that record. Anybody know anything about him?

The Blythes are GREAT. Yes.

I bought the twofer 6 or 7 years ago at some Cooper Square record store, and it was stolen from me 2 years ago. I just rebought "The Grip" off Ebay last week, but "Metamorphosis" still eludes me! And it's so missed!!

if those Phill Niblock trombone pieces are the same ones as on Young Person's Guide then they are truly awe-inspiring mountains of drone bliss.

<a href="http://www.phillniblock.com/";>Phill Niblock</a>
He made the film The Magic Sun, an awesome document of the 1966 Arkestra.

I was just looking for an India Navigation discography the other day after buying that Wada CD reissue

http://www.mimaroglumusicsales.com/artists/yoshi+wada.html

looks like their 1000 series was out jazz and their 3000 series was avant drone, my kind of label
