I literally just moved Underground Kingz up to #2 on my tentative end-of-year list five minutes ago. And yesterday I turned in a blurb on the album for my paper's EOY list. I should probably go ask to rewrite it in light of this.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but only two other sites report this, and they both cite that TMZ page as their source.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

if nothing else, underground kingz is a terrific fucking album and a fine memorial. RIP.

ana, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

His 2006 solo album, "Pimpalation" reached No. 3 on The Billboard 200. But it was understood that his stint in jail affected the artist's mental and physical health dramatically, to the point where he was unable to promote "Underground Kingz" in a meaningful way.

anyone know what these health problems were?

jhøshea, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

to the point where he was unable to promote "Underground Kingz" in a meaningful way.

I didn't follow UGK before Pimp's lockdown, so I was never sure if his strange statements in interviews were just him being him or if they were the product of jail.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

I think that was just him being him, the promotion they're referring to was probably extensive touring, more videos, etc.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

i hate seeing people go before their time. think of all he could have accomplished.

My local station, which rarely strays from the Urban Top 40, just played an hour long block of UGK & Pimp's guest & solo spots. It was great.

And then when I got on my knees that night to pray
I asked God why he let these killas live and take my homeboy's son away
Man if you got kids show em you love em cuz God jus might call em home
Cuz one day you here but baby the next day you gone

turn in yer badge (San Te), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, "I asked God why he let these killas live and take my homeboy's son away" gets me every time. amazing, amazing verse.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

I love almost everything UGK has ever released but that verse, and that song ultimately elevate Ridin' Dirty over the rest.

turn in yer badge (San Te), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, it's powerful stuff.

that "MURDER" sample right after this somber track is always so jarring!

ridin dirty miiiiiight be my fave as well but I always go back-and-forth between it and super tight. basically, the one I happen to be listening to is my fave.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

<3 Super Tight too. the double album also is in close competition.

turn in yer badge (San Te), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

every verse is total A game stuff on "one day" though. even 3-2 and I'm not even really sure who that dude is.

double album is great but I prefer the way bun sounds on the earlier records. also, no jazze pha.

It's streaming here:

From my one cursory listen, it's not very good. Needless to say, Drake makes an appearance.

polytetrafluoroethylene don (am0n), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

album is solid. the Drake song is by far the worst but the rest is pretty vintage Pimp C with guests he usually guested with while he was alive. even the production was very in line with what he mighta done if he himself produced it.

Sounds too much like a posthumous album, rapping doesn't fit with beats.

"even the production was very in line with what he mighta done if he himself produced it."

Huh ? not really.

sisilafami, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:20 (fourteen years ago)

you sure you heard the right album? the latter point I can see questioning, but I didn't see any of the former at all

it takes a nation of will.i.ams to hold us back (San Te), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

as far as the production other than a few 'clubby synthy' tracks, a lot of it was some of that Texas soul'n'funk that he liked.

it takes a nation of will.i.ams to hold us back (San Te), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

the drake track, "since the 90's", "midnight", "hit the parkig lot", "colors" & even "massacre" are not really close to pimp's production style. That's half of the songs.

sisilafami, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

they're not note perfect but they're not that off in left field, some of them sound like what the guest producers did on the Underground Kingz album. they fit his style to me, *shrug*, it's not like the case of Bun B imo

it takes a nation of will.i.ams to hold us back (San Te), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:29 (fourteen years ago)
