if you saw a dude who looked like this walking down the street in london circa 1966, would you think that this goofball would become the next decade's penultimate rock musician?!? and no, that's not even taking into account whether or not you've listened to any of the equally goofball songs he's hawking out of his apartment. i hope you break yer baton, indeed!

and yes, i know that a version of "space oddity" is on the anthology. i removed it b/c that song is more affiliated w/ classic-era david bowie, plus folks may be too tempted to pick "space oddity" and i want to give the other songs on the anthology a fighting chance.

That version of Space Oddity is not so great as I remember. The transformation of a mediocre novelty song into a superbly arranged epic about 20th century alienation is all you need to know about how Bowie was transformed from goofy sixties extra to ultimate 70s rockstar.

Lot of good, quirky songs there, though. Ultimately, I go for London Boys, which would actually be in my Bowie top 20.

Loads of great songs here - London Boys, There Is A Happy Land, We Are Hungry Men, but I'm going to go for Silly Boy Blue.

"Maid of Bond Street" is my pick but I wish I could vote for "Little Bombardier" in a twofer.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm really suprised that anyone's mentioning anything other than let me sleep beside you & in the heat of the morning

cw, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, Let Me Sleep Beside You is excellent. I think it was the first song Visconti ever produced for Bowie.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

I would dispute that David Bowie was the 70s' second-last rock musician

LAUGHING GNOME

latebloomer, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

I've always had a soft spot for Love You Till Tuesday.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

"Love You Till Tuesday". Probably not the most original of picks though.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

"Maid of Bond Street" is my pick but I wish I could vote for "Little Bombardier" in a twofer.

-- Noodle Vague,

I'll give it my vote on your behalf then.

I'dve voted for "We Are Hungry Men," but I forgot to. Great song, though. The version of "Space Oddity" on that album definitely isn't as good as the one everyone knows.

novaheat, Monday, 10 December 2007 08:39 (eighteen years ago)
