not enough mis-spellings in thread title

I know ilx traditionally has a pretty huge boner for Destroyer*, but I've never been all that into the albums. I really like the tracks he's done for New Pornographers, though - is the conventional wisdom that those tracks do, in fact, sound way different to the stuff he usually writes? I think "Myriad Harbor" is my favorite "Challengers" track.

"foam hands" sounds great. secretive. i downloaded a really good live vsn a few months ago, too.

Savannah Smiles - if you like "myriad harbour" there are a bunch of Destroyer tracks that you would like too. they're not quite as hooky but definitely not necessarily "way different". check "trembling peacock", "helena", "Farrar, straus and giroux", "rubies"...

thouugh ilxor did rambled on and on about Rubies at that time, the Destroyer talk stopped almost completely after the record came out.so i dont really think ilx has a Destroyer boner after all.

i really dug rubies and from the few times i've heard it this one's good as well. neither of them's a streethawk but they do the grandiose ridiculous epic thing pretty well, i think.

i wonder what's "Plaza Trinidad" is about.

i went into destroyer starting w/ rubies and didn't like notorious lightning or your blues half as much

this is lovely. luscious, like. the tone of the instruments reminds me of In Rainbows but maybe just because ...In Dreams. reminds me of that. the opening song is so great. i'm only half-way through listening, though.

That makes it sound v. different from Rubies, which reminded me of 70s Bowie.

dunno 70s bowie, really. definitely it's closest destroyer peers are Destroyer's Rubies and This Night. he seems to have worked pretty hard to make it sound pretty.

the 2nd half is like "rubies" - the song.
the first half is like "your blues" - the song.
the sound is somewhere in like "rubies" with live-vibe.

ok i was way off. having spent more time with it it's not nilsson-like at all, or particularly pretty. in fact, i don't think musically it's that great. jammy in a way that's putting me off right now. lyrics are tops, though, all nonsense and vivacity.

"shooting rockets" and the last song are dramatic, pretty and somewhat depressing.
i think i'll like this record.

first response. same wobbly guitar leads, new? use of mellotron strings, not nearly as many girl's names, nowhere near Rubies (except Shooting Rockets)--my ambivalence is sure to turn rapidly to wildly inordinate overpraise upon repeated listens

the biggest difference between "trouble" and "rubies" is that on this one there are less hooks .but still it's great and very enjoyeble.

nothing is hitting me quite like "painter in yr pocket" or "european oils" just yet.

maybe cause there are almost no hooks,and no catch-phrases..

this is growing at me to be the most disturbing,sometimes depressingly serious and maybe the best Destroyer release yet.
getting closer to Reed's "Berlin" and nick cave, and far away from "hunky dory"

the sense of depression,surrealism and insanity in this record is rare to find in records, and it strikes with great emotional power.
in short, it's the strongest Destroyer record to date
i really think bejar is in the same league as scott walker, lou reed and nick cave.at their best i mean.

After a couple of spins, I don't like it as much as Rubies. It's more bummed out, less ecstatic, less catchy. The song "Shooting Rockets.." is an impressive depressive reverie though - perhaps the one song that best approaches the peaks of Rubies - and there are some pretty, catchy tunes in the first half. The lyrics seem to be struggling a bit on this one.

Yeah, I just relistened to this yesterday and am trying to figure out why I don't like it nearly as much as Rubies, despite the fact that the sound is fairly similar. I think yeah, it's just a little less catchy.

I also think Bejar doesn't really sell it as much this time - he sounds a bit fatigued, less sure of himself, grappling with doubt.

I haven't decided where this places in the Destroyer pantheon yet, but it does feature my new favorite Bejar pun: "I was wringing a bell's neck!"

I think that to get away with singing nonsense it's important to sound utterly sure of yourself. Bejar pulled this off beautifully on Rubies. But to listlessly and apologetically sing nonsense wears on the listener's patience.

This has grown on me a bit, esp. "Rivers". I still don't like it as much as Rubies though.

There was an interesting Q&A with Bejar on eMusic recently where he said that he was listening a lot to Dylan's Christian-period albums while making Rubies - I definitely hear that in the singing.

saw him last week on tour for this record, it was one of the best shows I've seen him play

setlist was mostly This Night / Trouble in Dreams with a couple from Rubies .... any set that ends with Hey Snow White I'm gonna be cool with it

they're not playing anything from Streethawk or Thief though :/
