Here is the thread where I compare/contrast Swans 'Soundtracks for the Blind' with Stars of the Lid 'And Their Refinement of the Decline'

so i'm really enjoying the Stars of the Lid album this year, And Their Refinement of the Decline; it's no doubt one of my favorites of 2007, and the more i listen to it, i'm finding myself drawing a lot of comparisons to Swans' final album, Soundtracks for the Blind.

in short, i'd like to point out that both are -

- generally, ambient/drone/experimental music;
- predominantly to entirely instrumental;
- full of dynamics and interesting textures;
- wonderfully produced and mastered;
- very effective at setting and maintaining a mood;
- great-sounding at both loud and soft volumes;
- epic, sprawling double albums;
- the final/most recent albums of each artist;
- arguably each artist's very best album;
- among my favorite albums of 1997 and 2007.

anyway, i'd love to hear some opinions on either of these albums, or the comparisons i've made between them, and i know there's individual threads for both artists but this is different. and i'm making this a poll too, mostly to see how much overlap there is between fans of these guys on ilm. so please vote!

they're the only album i have by each artist! what i've heard is good, but i'll need to return to them.

btw a lot of ilx audiophiles are about to descend on this thread and tell you your comparison is bogus

LJ, go buy more swans, you big dummy.

John Justen, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

you seem to be the authority when it comes to awesome underground noisy industrial weirdness! ought to compile a list of advised purchases...

Just got offed, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

like, i would have bought some nurse with wound by now if he hadn't released 400000 records. where to start? is it too much of an effort? etcetera.

A lot of those connections are true of an awful lot of music, so not too meaningful.

arguably each artist's very best album

Very few fans of either band wd claim that about either of those albums I think.

They are both v. good double albums of a droney bent I can get behind tho.

LJ, I'll try to email you a list, but for NWW, the closest you'll get to a starter kit is Living Fear Of James Last.

John Justen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

Seems like a valid comparison. Like both, love neither. Wish they'd called it 'And Their Definement of the Recline'. Same difference, I suppose.

Bob Standard, Thursday, 6 December 2007 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

wow, that pun is almost certainly intentional come to think of it

cheers jj!

Only thing to do with NWW is dive in at random, really. The number of albums is thinned out a bit cos they aren't all easy to get hold of.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 6 December 2007 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, my favorite is still Sylvie and Babs, but you aren't going to find that easily last I checked.

John Justen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

i don't have that swans album but your comparison makes me want to get it now

ciderpress, Thursday, 6 December 2007 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

I'll stop NWWing up this nice thread now.

- the final/most recent albums of each artist

Problem here is that there's always been a bit of a debate as to how much of an album Soundtracks really is.

xpost: warning - these two (at least to my ears) are very different in mood (trying to define this and failing), so listen first.

There's something on that Swans album for everyone!

oh shit Best Swans Epic poll is probably a really good idea, i've got enough trouble choosing one from this record alone!

okay not necessarily best (though i did say "arguably"), but probably my favorite from each artist, and i've heard/owned about 2/3 of Swans' catalogue and all of SotL's....so count me among the "few" here.

stephen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

yeah it's ridiculous how nurse cds that were only just reissued in like 2001 are now going for £80 on amazon. i'd start with an awkward pause first (perhaps their most conventional record, "two shaves and a shine" is their yoga flame for all time sick ass pop song), then soliloquy for lilith (one of the best drone albums ever imo), then homotopy for marie (maniacal dadaist kecak biznizz). my personal favourite is spiral insana cuz that was my first nurse cd, bought completely at random.

xxxxp

r1o natsume, Thursday, 6 December 2007 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

i think i'll go for that compilation, then after that i'll go random.

stephen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

John Justen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

this is funny!

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

huh. it's in italics on safari, but not on internet explorer.

you might still be high though.

John Justen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 02:06 (seventeen years ago)
