Influenced by a certain Stiff poll. Note that several Depeche Mode titles are lacking, as they started using BONG instead of the usual Mute catalog numbers from "Leave In Silence" (BONG 1) onwards.

Voted "Dreaming Of Me" although "Only You" is surely a contender (and "Life On The Line" is Fad Gadget's best ever)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 6 December 2007 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to go for "Fred Vom Jupiter" but just noticed "Heart Of Hearts (Or So It Seems)" at the end - one of my favourite Wire spinoffs

Tom D., Thursday, 6 December 2007 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

"only you"

Back To Nature

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 6 December 2007 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

Kebabträume in der Mauerstadt,
Türk-Kültür hinter Stacheldraht
Neu-Izmir ist in der DDR,
Atatürk der neue Herr.
Miliyet für die Sowjetunion,
In jeder Imbißstube ein Spion.
Im ZK Agent aus Türkei,
Deutschland, Deutschland, alles ist vorbei.

Wir sind die Türken von morgen.
Wir sind die Türken von morgen...

Hmm....

What if Deusche Amerikanische Freundschaft comes out and says there's too many turkish people in East Germany? [Started by King ellits Fredtitmus, last updated 5 minutes ago] 25 new answers

"Just Can't Enough", fairly comfortably. "Only You" and "Warm Leatherette" and all the other Mode singles in honourable joint second.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 6 December 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

I was disturbed to discover that "Kebabträume" was adopted as a racist football chant, I must say. Hmm indeed.

I'm voting "Only You"/"Situation", because the presence of "Situation" j-u-s-t tips the balance in its favour over "TVOD"/"Warm Leatherette".

mike t-diva, Thursday, 6 December 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

I assume the song was irony. "We'll all be Turkish in the morning" indeed!

Mark G, Thursday, 6 December 2007 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

"Just Can't Get Enough", fairly comfortably.

OTM - for me, too

stephen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

It's more like "We are the Turks of tomorrow".

Kebabträume/Gewalt - D.A.F

THIS ONE OR DIE

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 6 December 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, DAF released a song called "Der Mussolini" whose lyrics were basically "Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Jesus Christ, UH! UH!" repeated over and over. Surely someone could take this out of context too, but it doesn't take away the greatness of the song.

This was a tough choice given that frickin' WARM FUCKIN' LEATHERETTE is on this poll, which I suspect will win, and it deserves to win.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 6 December 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

Argh, I can't decide between 'Warm Leatherette', 'Memphis Tennessee', 'Kebabtraume' and 'Fred Vom Jupiter'. And I still haven't heard enough Fad Gadget, although this thread has just reminded me to go and grab some.

emil.y, Thursday, 6 December 2007 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

I went with LD's parque but I sympathize with Mackro Mackro

El Tomboto, Thursday, 6 December 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "New Life" because I figured no one else would vote for it and it's far and away the best early DM single.

HI DERE, Thursday, 6 December 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

ten votes in total?

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

i couldn't vote. 13 of those records are in my all time top ten.

stirmonster, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I can't say I'm completely suprised at being the only NON/Smegma split voter.

John Justen, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure if I voted in the end. I am surprised at the person who chose 'Just Like Eddie' over 'Memphis Tenessee' - JLE is way weaker.

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

it is weaker but it has the glorious "sun flight" on the other side.

stirmonster, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:36 (seventeen years ago)

In which case I guess I could have gone for "Dreaming Of Me", as it has the glorious "Ice Machine" on the other side.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

I now see I did vote for "Dreaming Of Me". :)
