For me, it's a toss up between the handclap and open cymbal.

mehlt, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

then i'll take the open hi-hat.

blueski, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm trying to think of which sound on the 909 is most improved from its forebears I think the open hats have it by a long shot

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

which sound on the 909 is most improved from its forebears

The technical answer to that would be the hi-hat and cymbal sounds, as on the 909 they are samples instead of analogue. Certainly this makes these sounds more realistic compared to an 808, but whether or not they are better is a matter of taste.

snoball, Friday, 7 December 2007 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

yeah you really don't have to pretend you can son me on the trivia with these thanks

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 December 2007 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

I read the interview with the japanese session drummer who played those hi-hats, for real

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 December 2007 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

The point I'm making is what is an improvement and in what sense. Samples are a technical improvement, but are they a musical improvement? Is having a cymbal based on a sample automatically better? I'm saying that is not necessarily so, it's more dependant on the kind of music in which the cymbal is used.

snoball, Friday, 7 December 2007 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for the open hat myself, that big brassy clang is too hard to resist!

mehlt, Friday, 7 December 2007 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

landmark sounds for each:

505 = none really
606 = ticky tick snare is all that comes to mind
707 = see 505
808 = bass drum, clap, snare and closed hat
909 = snare, hats, maybe the bass drum if you like gabber

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

and don't try to tell me there was anything special about the 707 or the 505 because I've owned both and fuck'em, I mean really

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

Still my favorite BD.

Mr. Goodman, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:26 (seventeen years ago)

the BD isn't very versatile; to me it only sounds good in 4ot4

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

tho maybe I'm thinking of crappy attempts at emulating the 909 bass drum.

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

That sequencer...

PappaWheelie V, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

"washing machine" uses a 505 so fuck you grumpy pants

r1o natsume, Friday, 7 December 2007 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

also, 505 and 707 has bongos!

r1o natsume, Friday, 7 December 2007 11:50 (seventeen years ago)

808 high tom is the percussive hook on Loose Ends 'Hangin On A String' isn't it? one of my favourite things ever

and it's 808 rimshot on Acid Trax, Voodoo Ray etc. right? golden

back to 909, trying to think of favourite use of the open hat and the first things i think of are all British (LFO, Positive Education, Minus 61 In Detroit) which is a bit silly.

blueski, Friday, 7 December 2007 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

shuffle

sexyDancer, Friday, 7 December 2007 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

The design, it's a sweet looking drum machine!

dan selzer, Friday, 7 December 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

where's the clangy cowbell? is that the high tom sound?

Jordan, Friday, 7 December 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

i guess not, was that sound only 808?

Jordan, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

yup

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

ILX System, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

what about when jeff mills lets the ride cymbal play out and then turns the pitch knob so it gets deeper and deeper and deeper into the drum fill. that's my fave bit of 909ism.

sous les paves, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

closed hat

electricsound, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 03:05 (seventeen years ago)
