The highlight: Skating

chaki, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

is all of his stuff like this? i saw a used record yesterday that was hella cheap but i didn't know if it was all official awesome stuff like this

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

"Skating" is so the highlight that I almost have problems with a lot of the rest of the record, actually.

nabisco, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

you're fucking with the unfuckwithable, n.

chaki, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

"Skating" IS great!

I knew this would be a Chaki thread.

roxymuzak, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Where is the thread Ned started about this album where we later discovered that Colin Bailey and Monty Budwig probably didn't play on "Linus and Lucy"?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, here's the story at any rate: Snoopy Dogged

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:54 (seventeen years ago) link

And here's the thread: Reissue of the Year

dad a, Friday, 7 December 2007 22:58 (seventeen years ago) link

apparently they did fuck with it though; that remaster has the wrong take of Linus and Lucy as well as some other weird problems.

This album rules so hard.

definitely search the albums he did with Bola Sete. not really "like this" (more bossa nova inflected) but pretty awesome.

Stormy Davis, Friday, 7 December 2007 23:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus is great and features his big hit "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," always the most rocking song on the Muzak playlist.

One of the best reasons to look forward to December: the right to play this album without feeling guilty.

I feel no guilt, ever. I'll rock this shit year round.

Oddly listening to it right now, over a glass of cheap red wine with the Missus. Agreed. Unfuckwithable (as I wrote here back in 2005.

"in person" has a nice mix of standards like "On Green Dolphin Street" and "Jitterbug Waltz" with some Brazilian numbers, but I haven't really listened to it enough.

as much as i want to be the first contrarian on this thread, i cant. totally, 100% unfuckwitable. best bargain-bin find i've ever had at princeton record exchange.

max, Saturday, 8 December 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Listening to this now and lord but I love this record. Never much paid attention to it before, but the sequencing is so terrific!

Clay, Saturday, 8 December 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i.e., the way "Hark the Herald Angel Sings" transitions into the relatively (for this album) hard running jazz of "Christmas is Coming" is so great to me.

What???

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 9 December 2007 03:24 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah how could you fuck up THAT ONE out of all the tracks?

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 9 December 2007 03:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i dunno, you can read the amazon comments about it as well as other places on the internet. the earlier version (for instance, the same version you can buy at starbucks) has the correct takes, and apparently some boxed version you can find at costco and best buy on a candian label have correct songs; but the remaster (which has 'greensleeves' added) is all messed up

akm, Sunday, 9 December 2007 04:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Never noticed it being different before. There's an alternate take of "Linus and Lucy" as a bonus track that's markedly different, but it's a bonus, not a substitution.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 December 2007 08:01 (seventeen years ago) link

okay, it's this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Charlie-Brown-Christmas-Vince-Guaraldi/dp/B000ICLSMY/r

not the one pictured uptop that is messed up.

akm, Sunday, 9 December 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Since the thread title begs, I will fuck with this album.
"Hark the Herald Angels Sing". It's cute, but can also be a mood killer.

Bobbi Peru, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i duno man that intro is haunting and the singy part reminds me of the cartoon

chaki, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:16 (seventeen years ago) link

What mood does it kill, exactly?

Clay, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:28 (seventeen years ago) link

The light jazzy mellow mood. I like the intro a lot, but when they start belting it out... sometimes I skip.

Bobbi Peru, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:46 (seventeen years ago) link

chaki you are so right, it's impossible to have this album on and be sad.

J.D., Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

only thing it's missing is that awesome little "snoopy" theme that plays when he's decorating the doghouse.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

'christmas time is here' is the saddest song ever, how can you put it on and NOT be sad?

akm, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

The funny thing is of course how the lyrics are anything but that -- it's a gentle celebration when read, and even sung. I wouldn't call it flat out sad as a result, but it's certainly wistful, and in a 1966 context almost seems like it was meant to function in the same nostalgic headspace as "I'll Be Home For Christmas" did a generation earlier. Now that it's become part of all our collective memories, the function has transformed away from being part of a welcoming thought of 'what Christmas is like' -- it, along with the ice-skating part, was the first thing that anyone saw/heard of the special upon first broadcast -- to something else entirely.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Yep, unfuckwithable. And who could forget this:

the special is probably one of my ten favorite films, full stop

k3vin k., Friday, 18 December 2020 15:01 (four years ago) link

I was thinking about the TV show last week, when I heard "Christmas Time Is Here" on the radio. First, that in the new year I'm going to start a biography of Charles Schulz that a friend gave me a few years back. Then about the show: more than just a great TV show, I'm not kidding when I say--sorry for the hyperbole--I think it's one of the great pieces of art of the past 50 years or whatever. Especially first airing as it did in December of '65, in the middle of all that was happening in the States. I think the date comes up right at the end, at the bottom of the screen--gives me a chill. It'd take a lot more effort and space to explain myself. (I love when "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" comes in.) I was sad when I heard that this was the first year it wasn't going to get a network showing, that it had been bought by one of the big streaming services.

clemenza, Friday, 18 December 2020 16:04 (four years ago) link

the special is one of my favorites as well, and the LP is one of the very, very few christmas-related albums/songs i enjoy around this time of year. i tolerate a few more, and want all the rest of christmas music to not be part of 10% of the year (e.g., "the christmas tenth of life")

also thanks for the Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus tip above! it's brightening my morning up for sure, it's wonderful

Amazing album. No you cannot fuck with it, except for “Linus and Lucy” which is crap. Every time that comes on, my dinner party guests are like, “That was some nice mellow Christmas music we had there, Mr. Snrub. Why did you kill it and put on the fucking Charlie Brown theme song?”

“I don’t like the name of my strip at all. I wanted to call it Good Old Charlie Brown, but the person at the syndicate who selected Peanuts just picked it at random from a list of possible titles he jotted down. He hadn’t even looked at the strip when he named it. The syndicate compromised on Sunday, though. Once I rebelled and sent it in without any title. We finally agreed to put Peanuts at the top and include Charlie Brown and His Gang in the sub-title on Sunday.”
