Come on now.

"Think Bruce Springsteen meets Hot Water Music meets Woody Guthrie meets Crass." and then die a little inside

milo z, Saturday, 8 December 2007 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

I had to look up Hot Water Music. Should I be glad for this?

TBH I've never heard anything by Anti-Flag or Against Me! either so I dunno what I'm doing posting on this thread, whoops.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 8 December 2007 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

Anti-Flag had a big effect on my youth.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 8 December 2007 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

The Dead Kennedys probably had some impact on my youth, but they'd been broken up for about 7 years by that point.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 8 December 2007 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

I think I saw the second ever Anti-Flag show. A very early one at least. I'd just moved back to Pgh, and was just starting to survey the bands, and yeah, they really stood out as having something going on. But they weren't better than Submachine.

I just heard "The Ranks Of The Masses Are Rising" from Anti-Flag's new album. It was pretty good, but are they a one-note Johnny sort of band?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 12 April 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

Took me about 4 years to realize Anti-Flag was a band and not a t-shirt company, and when I finally heard them I can't say I was impressed. I did once here an Against Me! song I thought was kinda cool. I didn't like the vocals but I thought the guitar playing was interesting.

filthy dylan, Thursday, 12 April 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

listening to Against Me! again, I just realized I must be thinking of a different band. The band I heard was basically modern emoish punk in style but it had no drums and was kind of folky even.

Sadly thats one of the only three good songs on the new album. You'd think, given the political environment and the Occupy Movement, they'd be plenty fired up, but they have really toned down their lyrics and speak more in generalities. This is no longer the band singing about freeing Mumia and outling how to create an enemy. They're pretty much the Green Day of politi-punk now. Lots of catchy choruses and gang vocals, but really thin on content.

I was afraid of that. Are any of their earlier albums worth checking out?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 12 April 2012 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

Well, it depends on your tolerance for politically minded punk, I guess. They are (or were) definitely a one-note band, but I think they played that note really well. I'd say either check out Die for the Government or Mobilize first to see if you're up for more. If you are still interested, move on to Underground Network or A New Kind of Army. For Blood and Empire is alright, but I can't speak to any of the other ones. This is one of those bands that you kind of realize you don't need everything they release.

that's beautiful.

thanks for posting those pics in the other thread, I can totally see that guy calling you "brother" and making it work

there were nights we slept on the sidewalk outside a bank ("sleepful protest" seemed like a helluv an idea for a little while, til it didn't), and that's where i got to talk to him most. whenever anything positive happened--a passerby high fived us, a friend showed up with food, good news from some more exciting barricade somewhere--he'd yell out to the nearest person

"WE ARE WINNING ON ALL FRONTS, BROTHER. WINNING ON ALL FRONTS. SOLI-FUCKIN-DARITY"
