"Left To My Own Devices" it is.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 8 December 2007 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

"West End Girls" is such an obvious choice, and tonight (which is forever) it feels like the best one. Another seven or eight would do just as well.

sw00ds, Saturday, 8 December 2007 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

always on my mind!

circles, Saturday, 8 December 2007 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

tonight?

"Suburbia"

stephen, Saturday, 8 December 2007 07:44 (seventeen years ago)

"West End Girls"--then, now, forever.

JN$OT, Saturday, 8 December 2007 10:10 (seventeen years ago)

Since you can find these songs in one form or another on other albums, let me put in a good word for "Was It Worth It?" Totally of its time, the perfect transition to Very, Neil's coming-out record. I always smile broadly in the last 45 seconds when Neil sighs "I don't know why/I never thought I'd fall in love."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 8 December 2007 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

*since you can find MOST of these songs

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 8 December 2007 13:13 (seventeen years ago)

I never tire of telling people that "Rent" is the best song ever written, and still suckas won't listen.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

I love all these songs but I will vote for "Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)" because on Discography as an album its placement is impeccable and always a fist-pumping moment of boogie bliss.

Euler, Saturday, 8 December 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

"West End Girls" -- everything else is light years beneath it.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 8 December 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

dusty springfield all the way.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 8 December 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

first choice in this poll ftw

gershy, Saturday, 8 December 2007 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

"Surburbia"

snoball, Saturday, 8 December 2007 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for "Rent," I think. What's with the extra radio button? Are we allowed to vote for the album cover?

Telephone thing, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

Also, there's no way I can claim with a straight face it's the best track on the singles album of one of the best singles bands in history, but does anyone else feel "DJ Culture" is underrated? No? Just me?

Telephone thing, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

It's the one song I skip. The piano runs before the chorus are pretty. The underrated one is "Love Comes Quickly."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 8 December 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

Always on My Mind. A few years ago on the last day at a cruddy job I put that on and skipped down the street.

Kate, Saturday, 8 December 2007 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'd vote for the whole album if I could. It is by far my favorite collection of songs ever released. But it'll have to be West End Girls.

daavid, Sunday, 9 December 2007 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

"Heart". Ahead of "Domino Dancing".

"I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing" was their best single though.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 9 December 2007 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

BTW I prefer the way the songs were mastered for this one than for PopArt.

daavid, Sunday, 9 December 2007 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

...but does anyone else feel "DJ Culture" is underrated?

I do, although I think it's more like forgotten about. But it's an excellent track; particularly the background synths on the intro and the chorus.

daavid, Sunday, 9 December 2007 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

I went with "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)", but it could just as easily have been "Rent" or "Being Boring" or almost any of them really. THE best singles collection ever.

LeRooLeRoo, Sunday, 9 December 2007 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i think discography is like the decade of its time. a career-defining compilation. (at least, career to that point.) the pet shop boys are so good and so smart at what they do and the album gave them a chance to make that into an exclamation point. it was a classic as soon as you saw the tracklisting.

tipsy mothra, Sunday, 9 December 2007 06:04 (seventeen years ago)

"Being Boring"

Tape Store, Sunday, 9 December 2007 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

I'd vote for the whole album if I could.

uh dude

energy flash gordon, Sunday, 9 December 2007 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

Left to My Own Devices. Key moment: the way he sounds so indifferent yet so scornful in the line "maybe I'll sit up all night and day..."

ledge, Sunday, 9 December 2007 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

I love the version of "Heart" on this. But could easily have voted for "What Have I Done To Deserve This" or "Left To My Own Devices"

danzig, Sunday, 9 December 2007 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

The underrated one is "Love Comes Quickly."

yes yes yes yes yes!!

stephen, Sunday, 9 December 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

It's a toss-up between Always On My Mind and Being Boring for me. I've never really 'got' Rent.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 December 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

Well really the Carter cover is the definitive version there.

ledge, Sunday, 9 December 2007 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

it was a classic as soon as you saw the tracklisting.

OTM. What's really amazing is that this run of great songs is in chronological order, which means that they released consistently excellent singles for almost five years.

Then they made Very.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 9 December 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

stephen, Friday, 14 December 2007 08:08 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 15 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

6 votes for the entire album. :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 15 December 2007 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

There was a blank bullet at the beginning. I suppose those could be more "West End Girls" votes.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 15 December 2007 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

The blank bullet was because Scott put the image in the voting list rather than in the explanation.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 15 December 2007 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, I know that, I'm just suggesting that the blank bullet votes might be thought of as hanging chad votes for "West End Girls".

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 15 December 2007 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

14. Being Boring 0

O RLY?
