I'm making a prog mix for a friend and I have a few songs I'm pretty confident will definitely go on there including The Boys in the Band by Gentle Giant and Siberian Khatru by Yes. Other songs I thought would fit, aren't doing it for me in this context. Even stuff from In the Court of the Crimson King is too cohesive. I want prog songs that are totally self indulgent, everywhere all at once. Tried so hard by GONG is a contender. I'm looking for the right Genesis or Nice song as well.

I think what I might have to do, is just go with as many epics as I can fit on a cd. Like a side of Soft Machine 3, 2112 by Rush and then the smaller stuff.
― filthy dylan, Saturday, 8 December 2007 06:59 (seventeen years ago)
maybe some italian stuff? il balletto di bronzo, biglietto per linferno, ibis or pfm?
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 8 December 2007 07:48 (seventeen years ago)
also what about some fuckin VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, dude?
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 8 December 2007 07:49 (seventeen years ago)
oh, wait: YEZDA URFA.
GOBLIN?
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 December 2007 07:55 (seventeen years ago)
Which van der graaf should I get? And obviously I mean the most fucked up, not necessarily the "best"
― filthy dylan, Saturday, 8 December 2007 07:58 (seventeen years ago)
How about Caravan? I've heard their name thrown around but haven't actually heard them. I'm also thinking certain german bands might fit.
― filthy dylan, Saturday, 8 December 2007 08:01 (seventeen years ago)
i'm actually not a van der graaf expert (just been getting into them lately), but "a plague of lighthouse keepers" is a 20+ minute suite.
but if you're looking for seriously odd, definitely yezda urfa.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 8 December 2007 08:23 (seventeen years ago)
Well it depends on the contrast / connections you want to make with the mix.
If you want a big over the top one in a close to the edge/suppers ready/plague of lighthouse keepers style (but not too long) Try 'As your mind flies by' by Rare Bird,
If you want to keep it chilled, go for the later smooth jazz-rock Soft Machine (maybe out of season from softs?) or the pastorial (Fluid's nothing but morning maybe?).
I was actually thinking the Mockingbird by BJH would fit in what you've chosen, but I always hated that track, so something showing the earlier prototypes of this sort of thing, maybe symphonic-tending Moody Blues (No, not Nights in White Satin - maybe Questions?)

I want prog songs that are totally self indulgent, everywhere all at once.
Cogs in Cogs
― Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 8 December 2007 09:15 (seventeen years ago)
The Battle Of Epping Forest is probably Genesis' least cohesive epic, but it's not actually very good. Maybe The Musical Box? Several sections, ends up in a totally different place from where it started, quotes a nursery rhyme in the middle = prog heaven.
I'm no Zappa expert but he was definitely everywhere all at once.
Side 1 of Mekanik Destructiw Kommandoh by Magma?
― Matt #2, Saturday, 8 December 2007 10:34 (seventeen years ago)
"Waiting Room" by Genesis. Recommend from prog-mad bf.
― Trayce, Saturday, 8 December 2007 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

for Van der Graaf go with "La Rossa" for ver Nice go with "America"?
― Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago)
'the devil's triangle' on crimson's 'wake of poseidon' is pretty unlistenable.
― akm, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:41 (seventeen years ago)
'jesus he knows me' by genesis is unlistenable, but for different reasons
try some comus (maybe "the herald"?), le orme ("sospesi nell'incredible"?), ulver ("it is not sound"?), and battles ("atlas"?). none of those are unlistenable but each has its share of awesome ridiculous moments
― kamerad, Saturday, 8 December 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago)
I maintain that "The Truth" is the most awesomely WTF-brilliant-mad-prog-noise-freakout track on that album. Either that or "Christmas". No, it's definitely "The Truth".

Okay I just added Sitcom by Camberwell Now. This Heat was too post punky. This was just proggy enough.
― filthy dylan, Saturday, 8 December 2007 19:23 (seventeen years ago)
And I downloaded a huge torrent of italian prog I have to wade through to find the right level of craziness.
Does Acid Mothers Temple count?
― novaheat, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
Their songs are too cohesive. I want something with lots of parts and time signature changes.
― filthy dylan, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:57 (seventeen years ago)
art bears maybe?
― Clay, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:58 (seventeen years ago)
check out the stuff on my list, dude! except the king crimson, because you've already discounted that.
― Just got offed, Saturday, 8 December 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
dude. Hope for Happiness - the Soft Machine
― babyalive, Sunday, 9 December 2007 00:14 (seventeen years ago)
this probably isn't what you're looking for, but you could even throw on some early Throwing Muses/weirder Kate Bush.
also, Hawkwind. Slapp Happy (people don't talk about them enough!). Henry Cow.
― babyalive, Sunday, 9 December 2007 00:30 (seventeen years ago)
Just buy him an Orthrelm record.
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 9 December 2007 03:03 (seventeen years ago)
I would second that "Battle of Epping Forest" by Genesis probably fits what you are looking for in terms of the 'self-indulgent', 'everywhere all at once' (other considerations might be "Colony of Slippermen", or of course "Supper's Ready").
VdGG, for your criteria, it's probably "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers"
― Joe, Sunday, 9 December 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago)
I'm curious, though, why go with the most fucked up or all over the place over the best?
― Joe, Sunday, 9 December 2007 04:13 (seventeen years ago)
And why not include stuff like Gorguts Obscura or Immolation or Naked City for that matter?
If you just wanted aural fuckitude... a lot has happened since the 70s.
I definitely agree with the VDGG. "Lighthouse Keepers" or "Man-Erg" would be good on any comp.
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 9 December 2007 05:04 (seventeen years ago)
oh, shit - SHUB NIGGURATH. the post-zeuhl one, not the mexican death metal band.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 9 December 2007 07:29 (seventeen years ago)
What about some early Zappa/Mothers stuff? Some of the Baby Snakes era stuff was pretty out there.
― Trayce, Sunday, 9 December 2007 07:42 (seventeen years ago)
I can see filthy dylan walking into his 12-hour DJ set holding six records.
