Anticipating a show by Smashing Pumpkins around the time of Siamese Dream, I recall hearing from friends that Billy C no longer conceded to playing Rhinocerous live - apparently it was too pop or something. So I attended said concert expecting not to hear it, despite it being my favorite song of theirs. I was happily surprised, therefore, to hear the opening rhinochords at the beginning of the show's encore. But it seems Billy had contrived a rouse just for dumbass ticketpayers like myself, as he proceeded to intentionally flub the song and sing sarcastically. It seemed he wanted to deliberately punish his fans, so fuck that guy.
Having written that, I realize that other bands I hold dear (The Jesus and Mary Chain, etc.) have notoriously flipped the bird to their fans. Now I could deal with the romantic notion of a band delivering a 15-minute set of guitar feedback, or otherwise (I once stayed until the end of a pre-The Greatest Cat Power gig). But Billy Fucking Corgan sneering at me for paying to hear his song - I honestly wouldn't mind punching that guy in the face.

I've really never felt this way about a show before. I'm always happy with what I get. A few years, Bruce Springsteen played here and afterwards, everyone bitched about how he didn't do "Dancing in the Dark". THE MAN PLAYED "MARY, QUEEN OF ARKANSAS" FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 25 YEARS, AND YOU'RE PISSED BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T GET TO HEAR A SONG THAT'S ON THE RADIO EVERY EIGHT HOURS?

I wasn't at the show in question, but evidently the last time Bauhaus ploughed through NYC's Nokia Theatre (a year or two ago? I forget), they neglected to play "Bela Lugosi's Dead," much to the pronounced chagrin of the gathered throng.

My favorite moment at a Wilco show was when some drunk fat boy kept shouting at Jeff Tweedy, "Chickamagua"! He didn't play it.

i generally don't worry so much about needing to hear specific songs. though on the subject of wilco (and the thread itself) i did shout out a few times for 'hotel arizona' last time i saw them. wasn't played. think there were 2 'being there' tracks played that night: 'misunderstood' (which i could have done without) and 'kingpin' (nice surprise)

They played it at every other gig on that tour apparently. I missed the chance to see them live in Atlanta because of Thanksgiving, so my mom bought me a Bauhaus live CD -- and guess which one?

nirvana didn't do teen spirit on the in utero tour (maybe on the nevermind tour too, i don't know). but i thought that was a good move. i think it made the show looser without that song looming over it.

I saw Nirvana play "...Teen Spirit" towards the end of the Bleach tour. Tons of us booed.
Anway, I want to see Carcass on the Heartwork tour and they began the intro to an older track from Symphonies..., then stopped and laughed at the crowd's excitement.
Fucking wankers.

fuck, if you want to talk about audience teasing, that was practically Metallica's shtick on the Load tour. kept playing intros to things like "Sanitarium" and not playing the song. Fortunately I knew this would happen before I went because of USEnet, but they must have realized people hated them for it because when I saw them in 1999 they pulled out "Blackened"!

I saw the Pumpkins come through Dallas about a month ago, reunion tour, and by the encore they still hadn't played "Zero" and all the frat guys were chanting "ZE-RO ZE-RO ZE-RO ZE-RO" during the pre-encore break, and Corgan still didn't play it. In fact, he played two songs in the encore before the chant resumed, at which point he was obviously frustrated and just walked off stage.
Earlier in the show, someone was throwing mayonnaise packets on stage. That didn't work, either.
On the other hand, when the crowd was nice to him (i.e., not requesting songs in obnoxious ways) in Austin a week earlier, he did a six-song encore instead, which lasted about 30 minutes, and was obviously in good spirits.

kept playing intros to things like "Sanitarium" and not playing the song.
Led Zeppelin would do this in the late 70s - start playing a few bars of "Whole Lotta Love" before launching into "Achille's Last Stand" or something like that.

However when Metallica did it, they often launched right into...the intro of ANOTHER song they had no intention of playing. It's weird, they were noodling a lot but not in their typical sense (like extended 18 minute solos).
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 9 December 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)
I swear this happened when I saw them once because I was wondering if the guy was oblivious or just trying to piss Tweedy off.
― joygoat, Sunday, 9 December 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)
I witnessed it in Memphis, four or five years ago.
― Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 9 December 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)
I've never left concert disappointed at the omission of any song; I don't feel that the performer owes me anything. But crissakes, how I hate that Corgan-Cobain mass-audience-resentment punk-rock bullshit attitude - "We never intended to sell ten million records; we're not gonna play our big hit just to please all the MTV viewers" - how childish is that? The song was good enough to record but now it's unworthy of your stage show? Jesus... Dude, just OPEN your fucking set with "Teen Spirit" - everyone who came to hear the hit is satisfied immediately, and everyone else is happy to have gotten it out of the way.
― Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 10 December 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)
They'd play the intro to "Out On The Tiles" as a way to start "Black Dog." I don't think it was done specifically to fake out the audience -- it's not a bad song, but I can't imagine too many Zep fans being super-excited about them playing "Tiles." Or being disappointed when they didn't.

I understand Blur don't play "Country House" these days, so I don't go and see them.
― Geir Hongro, Monday, 10 December 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)
Blur plays all their weirds unlistenable stuff this days ;_O
― Just got offed, Monday, 10 December 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, they teased with "Whole Lotta Love", too. I read it in Hammer of the Gods, a book that is 100% factual.
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 10 December 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)
Almost positive Nirvana played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" when I saw them on Utero tour.
― Mark Rich@rdson, Monday, 10 December 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)
to be honest Smells Like Teen Spirit never worked real well in a live setting. all the live versions I've heard of it have sounded mediocre due to Kurt's tinny sounding voice (one of the only songs that really needed that 'studio processed' voice to work)
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 10 December 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)
"Milk It", on the other hand, was an improvement on the studio version
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 10 December 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)
Pagans, reunion gig, no appearance of Eyes of Satan OR What's This Shit Called Love.
― ian, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)
mebbe so. since they didn't the night i saw them i figured it was some kind of policy, but maybe it just depended on whether they felt like it on a given night.
― tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, after posting, looked @ some set lists, and it looks like they phased it out over the course of that last tour.
