What the hell else do we do with our time?

Are we strictly into music and nothing else or do we have other hobbies?

Is anyone into, say, fishing? And if so, do you take a portable stereo with you and combine the two?

Is anyone into surfing / playing football / breeding ocelots / hard drugs?

Do we have LIVES OUTSIDE OUR RECORD PLAYERS?

Nick Southall, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah hard drugs, i already told you that.

In no particular order, I'm also manic about: Photography, "Cult" Cinema (see the CULT FILM ALLUSIONS thread for pathetic evidence of same), writing (I freelance write for a couple of rags), and bicycling. I have collected comics on and off like an insufferable geek and am gradually recovering from a temporary PlayStation addiction. I've gradually devoloped an appreciation for offbeat artists/cartoonists/ culture satirists like Robert Williams, H.R.Giger, Evan Dorkin, Danny Hellman and Shepard "OBEY GIANT" Fairey. Favorite authors include Mark Leyner, David Sedaris, Martin Amis and most recently Anthony Bourdain. I pitch for TIME Magazine's softball team and I'm currently taking a cooking class with my wife.

Oops, almost forgot: Favorite BEERS include Moretti, Estrella Damm from Spain, Pilsner Urquell, Peroni, Dixie, Lone Star and good ol' Brooklyn Lager.

I used to wear a Walkman round the clock....until I developed tinnitus two years ago. I take Ginko Biloba for it...which does nothing. I now only wear the Walkman on occaission...like at the fuckin' gym. I really shouldn't use it at all, but I can't bear to listen to Crunch Fitness's choice of Hi-NRG dance music, let alone the inane conversations of my fellow gym-goers.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I ought to mention mine...

I play five-a-side football once a week, I cycle a lot, go to the pub, I love films, I'm addicted to ISS Pro Evolution Soccer 2 on Playstation, I like drinking, I've got piles of books to read, I like cooking, fond of beer and wine, pub quizzes (is that the plural of 'quiz'?), plus I like just kind of hanging around near rivers and the sea and in the countryside. For some reason I could quite fancy taking up fishing.

Nick Southall, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tatooing, Rodeo and kiddie-porn.

Motel Hell, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Favourite beers...

Guinness, Newcastle Brown Ale, Red Stripe lager (out of bottles), Sharp's Doombar (Cornish real ale), Abbot Ale, Gale's heavy Special Bitter (looks like drinking chocolate, never have more than three pints, can't find it ANYWHERE)...

Red wine. Never ever white. Although I'm quite keen on champagne and sparkling aussies...

Nick Southall, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like Kylie.

Nick Southall, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm a bit of an art groupie (just spent the afternoon with a curator being run through a big show he's organising for Tokyo in August) and also inveterate skirt-chaser. Also enjoy cycling and shopping for secondhand clothes.

Momus, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Teaching Web design (erm...at a fairly basic level) & wrting & producing for Mike Alway's if... & Reverie labels.

Jez, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, Jez, that used to be my job!

What do you do for Mike?

Momus, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...well I did Shazna's last Maria... album. When it was mastered, it somehow became dreadfully distorted. We did Songs for the Jetset 2000 & the subsquent Death By Chocolate & David Candy albums, along with a few others, havind previuosly contributed bits & bobs as Tomorrow's World.

Jez, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, cool! I just did the Milky album with Shazna, of course.

She played me the vocoder version of 'Asian Bounty Hunter' which I think you did, no? I liked that. (Sorry everyone else, we're straying back into music...)

Actually, this emphasis on 'other hobbies' is a very Mike Alway theme. In the early days of el Records he made everyone pose as some other occupation, any other occupation than musician. So Louis Philippe became a pastry chef, Kevin Wright a betting tout, and the King of Luxembourg a... well, an aristocrat, I suppose. A silly Lord Peter Wimsey with his city stockbroker trousers around his ankles. I think I was supposed to be an evangelist or something.

Momus, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Learning to dance salsa really well, the part that can be taught and learned anyway, has been taking up a lot of my time, along with actually going out dancing. I suppose this is too music related to really be considered another interest. My other interests tend to be very bookish, but I don't make as much time for extended reading as I have sometimes in the past. Necessary to correct an imbalance in my life: too much isolation. I have a long list of things I would like to learn, but I can only get to them gradually. Over the past year I have been getting ideas for visual art projects, but I'm not sure what to make of that impulse since my actually abilities to realize these ideas are inadequate at the moment. I imagine that if I had a house, if I went suburban, or quasi-suburban (for instance, moving to the far northeast of Philadlphia, which technically is still inside city limits but feels somewhat suburban in places), I would designate rooms for projects of various sorts. All very diletantish, I suppose, but I'm not really concerned with what posterity at this point. Of even the most famous in their fields, so few are remembered for very long. What am I rambling on about? I wish I were rich.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, although I only have a small apartment, I find that doing laundry, cleaning and straightening up, take an inordinate amount of my time.

Allergies/sinus problems force me to rest more often than I would like.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do generally have the stereo going 16+ hours a day, but those who know me know that I am _very_ into vegetarian cooking and comics (both small-press and mainstream).

Douglas, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apart from music, my time is taken up by onanism and Championship Manager.

Judd Nelson, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Reading. I always have to have some book or magazine I'm plowing through. A slow but sure collector of movies, especially thanks to DVD. Going out to cool restaurants with friends, trying out new cuisines, as well as getting together with them to cook at home and experiment. Pondering life at my own speed. Writing, fiction and non. Otherwise investigating whatever takes my fancy...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Favorite BEERS include ... Dixie

Hell yeah! Dixie is the bomb. I try to keep a couple 6-packs in the fridge at all times. I wish I had a Dixie right now.

As for me, when not listening to music I read, cook and watch Buffy. And I drink.

adam, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Being from Philadelphia Pa. I have no choice but to be a major sports fan. I am a season ticket holder for the Philadelphia Phillies(they suck)but it's nice for the family(me,wife, son)for those who don't know, the Phillies are a baseball team.I am fanatical about the Philadelphia Eagles(professional football, american football).MUSIC IS MY LIFES PASSION! I have been a musician for over 25 years (guitarist,singer/songwriter).My wife and son are also music fanatics, my son(13 years old) is becoming a fine drummer. For our family, music and love is the key to life( a little sports too).

James H., Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am fanatical about the Philadelphia Eagles

Ah, then obviously you need to record them a new theme song, to the tune of "20th Century Boy."

"Philadelphia Eagles! They're gonna win this year!"

Or something.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Golf, strangling small animals and masturbatio n.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm from in and around Philadelphia and I pay no attention to professional sports.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, I'm a musician as well? Other than that my main interests are reading (when I'm in school I mostly read sci-fi for fun, when I'm not I read more educational books sometimes), watching sci-fi, and girls.

Jordan, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Writing, fiction and non.
You're a nihilist?

I kill puppies and feed them to unsuspecting humans. Remember that tofu burger you ate? It wasn't soycheese.

nathalie, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, I LOVE YOU! So you know, "20th Century Boy" has been played a few times at Eagles, and Phillies games; much to my delight.Of course I was dancing in my seat.

James H., Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do try.

Golf, strangling small animals and masturbation.

Put down your Python DVDs, now. Too much use and you'll get a rash.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

painting (always listen to music while doing), reading, electirical engineering, photography, animation, movies, music, Japanese, hiking/nature(never listen to music while doing), biking, partying, building things, sculpture, writing, swimming

A Nairn, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO! Actually, yeah, I really like linguistics/philosophy of language, making good food (when I can), playing basketball or frisbee, acting weird in public, binge sleeping on weekends, tennis, the Chinese language. I've just started to discover that not all beers taste like shit, but I wouldn't call it a hobby or anything. And of course ALL of us have the hobby of the good ol' lifesucking internet! Actually, I pretty much use the internet as an email/ILM machine.

Clarke B., Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Am I the only person who feels like I'm applying for a job when I list my "hobbies"? I often think I'm really lame after doing it.

Clarke B., Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's because you are lame, you punk. *smacks Clarke down* Wait, I mistook you for someone else.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I read history books most of the time and some fiction, i also kick a small ball around the house. sometimes i dance in the kitchen to northern soul when nobody's looking (but that's music related). i study for final exams. kayaking and playing football in the summer. flirting with intelligent blondes is another hobby. playing snooker/pool. eating Ryvita. belittling by friends. sexual innuendo. tea drinking is great.

yes i am boring

ARGH

Major Alfonso, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Making music. I spent all day on a damn mix. For non-musicians, mixing is the technical term for what you do when you're ready to stop having fun making music.

dleone, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I try to get away from the violent world of which I'm apart, via hunting, karate, collecting guns and swords...

Joe, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One of my favorite pastimes at the moment is applauding the doom inflicted upon a certain Major League Baseball team I once rabidly supported for years upon years. Adulthood. Heh.

Andy K, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So admittedly I haven't been paying attention to baseball much this season (or most seasons) -- explain yourself, Andy. Or just direct me to a sports link or something. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Making music, playing old nintendo games... on my dreamcast! Aaaah, technology.

original bgm, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er I don't wanna get on a soapbox or go into too much detail, but lately I've been reading the Tigers' box scores with all the drooling delight of a Flesh Fair spectator.

I wonder where the hell Im going. Ive hardly ever been on the internet before this year. I am so unhappy at work that I find myself procrastinating over such important topics as MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF PEANUT on food wrapping , how can Canada grow at 5.1%, and threads on ILM. I do typical blokey things- work on my 77 Kingswood, surf, shoot furry critters and play rugby. Im also trying to work out how to mix a social conscience with Ayn Rand.

kiwi, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Im also trying to work out how to mix a social conscience with Ayn Rand.

Matter and antimatter. Just take the doublethink route.

re: fishing and music. When you've got a barramundi on the line, the only appropriate music seems to be AC/DC

I'm a lawyer (ducks).

J, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK.

Beers: Czech draught beers, Belgian bottled beers, and all beers by the Ansty brewery here in Brighton all sold in their own pub, The Evening Star - If you have a beer festival in your area, pray they have some from Ansty.

I make music, although never as much as I really should - I blame my girlfriend but I know I'm just lazy deep down.

Cooking is good, mainly fish and vegetarian (that'll be the girlfriend again)

And of course my home-town team, Ipswich Town, who are barring a miracle of biblical, or (93/94 season last-minute-goal variety) unfotunately returning to the wonders of the first division. I share a season ticket with my brother and have a 250 mile round trip for each home-game, which here in th UK is a long way.
