JN$OT, Monday, 10 December 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Last time out; last chance--get them Peter Bjorn and John votes in, jokerz!

JN$OT, Monday, 10 December 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ both Clipse singles placing on the Idolator poll. this might be my least favorite P&J singles poll of the decade so far. I'll vote for T.I.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 December 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with you there, Alex; these lists were both kinda weak (worst ever?). I'm voting for the unmentionable.

JN$OT, Monday, 10 December 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

"worst ever"? really? I think there's lots of good stuff on here--I'm certain there are worst years, and probably even less interesting years this decade. my own favourites aren't even on this, but there's more than enough to hold my interest. anyway, I'd vote for one of the really good ones I didn't know well enough (or at all) at the time: "Irreplacable," CSS or New York Dolls.

sw00ds, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Kick, Push

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Only things I actively dislike (aside from things I've never heard):

Beyoncé: "Ring The Alarm" (Sony)
Christina Aguilera: "Ain't No Other Man" (RCA)
Corinne Bailey Rae: "Put Your Records On" (Capitol)
The Raconteurs: "Steady, As She Goes" (V2)
TV on the Radio: "Wolf Like Me" (4AD/Interscope)

sw00ds, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

but you know, I might actuall like "ring the alarm" a little better now, so even that's probably not true.

sw00ds, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Oops...I totally didn't mean to put "Wolf Like Me" on there, either (damn you cut-n-paste). I don't mind that song. Far from loving it, but it's fine.

sw00ds, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ahem, try this again... what I dislike:
Christina Aguilera: "Ain't No Other Man" (RCA)
Corinne Bailey Rae: "Put Your Records On" (Capitol)
The Raconteurs: "Steady, As She Goes" (V2)

sw00ds, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I meant worst singles poll (maybe) by that, actually--lord knows there have been plenty of even worse album lists.

And I've always really liked "Ring the Alarm." For me, it was "Irreplaceable" that was the grower from B-day.

JN$OT, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

"ain't no other man" is such a piece of shit song. the critical praise for it was so o_O to me.

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

"mr me. too">>>>>>>>>>>>>"wamp wamp"

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

Arctic Monkeys: "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" (Domino)
Cassie: "Me & U" (Bad Boy)
Cat Power: "The Greatest"
Hot Chip: "Over and Over" (Astralwerks) Knife - Silent Shout
Knife: "We Share Our Mother's Health" (Mute)
Lil Wayne ft. Robin Thicke - Shooter
Lily Allen: "LDN" (Capitol)
Lupe Fiasco: "Kick, Push" (Atlantic)
Mary J. Blige: "Be Without You" (Geffen)
Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland: "Promiscuous" (Geffen)
Pipettes: "Pull Shapes" (Memphis Industries)
Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean: "Hips Don't Lie" (Sony)
T.I.: "What You Know" (Grand Hustle/Atlantic)
The Hold Steady - Chips Ahoy!
The Killers: "When You Were Young" (Island)
TV on the Radio: "Wolf Like Me" (4AD/Interscope)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Gold Lion

^i like all of these songs but i can't say that any of them are truly "great." what a weak year for singles. i think i'm voting "promiscuous".

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

people were still on about lady sovereign at the end last year? wtf

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Performance of the year.

JN$OT, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

yeah otm. loved that one because it was basically right at the height of "crazy"'s big groundswell and it was cool to see them do a diff version. they did the slow one again on conan a bunch of months later, and i almost like it better because cee-lo's voice is really strained (presumably because they had been touring) and it sounds even more unsettling.

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Dammit, that doesn't seem to be available on YouTube.

JN$OT, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I meant worst singles poll (maybe) by that, actually--lord knows there have been plenty of even worse album lists.

Well, I haven't paid much attention to LP polls since 1980-something, so we are in fact talking about the same thing here, but--I don't know, I can easily pull a dozen things from that list I either love or really like a whole lot.

sw00ds, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

"ain't no other man" is such a piece of shit song. the critical praise for it was so o_O to me.

No idea what "o_O" means, but I assume I entirely agree! Hate the song so much.

sw00ds, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, it's not a bad singles list by any means, just not as good as many (most?) of the others.

xp

That song was quite annoying.

JN$OT, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

the wonky-sounding horn/organ swell and Xtina going "HEYYYYYYYYYY" at the beginning of that song is seriously like my least favorite sound in music ever.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha alex most otm thing you've ever said. i've almost crashed my car so many fucking times immediately after hearing that on the radio.

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

at the time i respected Primo just for doing something in a slightly faster BPM than 99% of his hip hop shit, but that song couldn't have been cornier if Mark Ronson produced it.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, wrong. That Xtina single was fantastic, even if she did think it was a Billie Holiday tribute. It had such a great hook, and I'm a sucker for the horn stabs. I don't understand how people can get het up for Umbrella and dislike Ain't No Other Man.

I eat cannibals, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

The corniness made it great.

I eat cannibals, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

I don't feel comfortable voting for LCD Soundsystem even though I love the run out of it. Does it really count as a single? How? Is E2-E4 a single?

So I'm going with Rick Ross' "Hustlin'" for the most exciting intro of the year with a special nod to my boy Justin Timberlake for dying into "Sexyback."

M.I.A.:

Lady Sovereign: "Public Warning" (Def Jam) - How can anyone prefer the thin "Love Me Or Hate Me" to this lane-changing blur of grime skapunk with a CCR quote and several boastful nursery rhymes? Single of the year.

The Federation: "18 Dummy" (Reprise) - Forget Pazz/Idolator. How come this masterpiece didn't storm the BILLBOARD charts? Hook of the year. It goes "18 Dummy. 18 Dummy. 18 Dummy. 18 Dummy. 18 Dummy. 18 Dummy. 18 Dummy. 18 Dummy."

Mocean Worker: "Under The Matzos Tree (Remix)" (MP3) - Finally got Jewface just yesterday. But I've been familiar with Ada Jones' 1907 original for a while and I love how Adam Dorn takes it as one end of a ribbon and ties it to a 2006 dub house track. All I wanna know now is what audiences in 2107 will make of it assuming there are humans left inhabiting the planet.

Mew: "The Zookeeper's Boy" (Sony BMG) - I first wondered why all Britpop can't sound this pretty, why it couldn't build such power from meticulous strong structure. Then I learned they were from Denmark. Then I heard the album which was blah. Then I learned to take my pop flukes where I could get them and move on.

Simon Bookish: "Terry Riley Disco" (Playlouder) - It's hard to guffaw while dancing but I manage.

Skeletons & The Girl-Faced Boys: "Fit Black Man" (Ghostly International) - The closest the Aughties have come to the psych-disco of The United States of America's "The Garden Of Earthly Delights."

The Pierces: "Boring" (Lizard King) - It's hard to guffaw while posing so I don't even try.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 10 December 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember what I voted for and am afraid to look.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

As much as I like the Cassie, Hot Chip, JT, and Knife singles, I'm going to go with Cat Power. Her best song ever, and so mysterious....

Dan S, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I think I voted for Panic! At the Disco, which is unfortunately missing.

jaymc, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

I'd vote for P!ATD if they were here. I would have voted for "Promiscuous" a year ago, but I've tired of it and so I'm voting for Cassie. "Tell Me When to Go" is still the greatest song of ever though and fuck the entire portion of the electorates that didn't vote for it. People upthread are mad RONG re: "Ain't No Other Man".

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

rev traversing between otm and RONG at like 80 mph right there.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

i'll cosign this 4 lyfe.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

I feel more strongly about that than the xtina song, so you're still cool.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

I had "Shooter" as number one last year...I'll still throw it a vote, though I probably prefer my number two (Cassie - "Me & U") and number three (Ciara - "Promise," which is M.I.A.) right now.

I still like that MCR song.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

black parade song is good, black parade album is GREAT.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

Better than the Panic! album?

Also not present:

Liars - The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack
The Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control (i voted for the Soulwax Nite Version, which fucking rocks)

Tape Store, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't heard the panic album. i liked the single but idk i assumed the album would annoy the fuck out of me so i never got around to it.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

That was directed at nicky, not Tape Store.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for "Irreplaceable," which I should have done at the time (and might have had I heard it)

Matos W.K., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 07:26 (eighteen years ago)

Cat Power does get me into some sort of dream state. I think I'm already half way there by nature, though.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

The First (and last) Joint P&J / JP Singles Poll Results Gag!

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

That's officially "funny."

Can we somehow transport back to the '70s now?

sw00ds, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

Can we somehow transport back to That '70s Show?

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

I want all these fake poll winners collected on one handy CD.

Eric H., Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

Or at least a new poll: most hilarious fake #1.

Eric H., Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

the only think that derails the lulz is that we can just ignore the "winner" and assume the second place finisher is the person who got the most real votes.
we should be proud that ppl take time out of their day to conspire against a message board poll, though.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you John for doing all these P&J polls!!! I'm going to be a bit lost now that they're done.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I suppose you could wander the streets, trying to start conversations about "Xgau" with strangers. That's what you did before these threads, right?

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

No, I offered you a hug.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 13 December 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

John will think of other threads.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 13 December 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

Now that these are done, could the conspirators have the courtesy to out themselves?

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 December 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure they still have more subversive satirical work left to do, like making sure the shortest song in every EPICS poll wins

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 December 2007 06:04 (eighteen years ago)

John will think of other threads.

Hell yeah! Be here next week when we head on down that long-and-winding-road of Rolling Stone's Greatest Albums Of xxxx threads!

(j/k)(I think...)

JN$OT, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:09 (eighteen years ago)
