jaymc, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:08 (seventeen years ago)

I copied and pasted from somewhere else. Hence: "Wheezer."

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

And "Grandmaster Funk"

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

Haha. Yeah.

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

Totally Wheezer for me.

Euler, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

This reeks of a 'come up with a list of bands, figure out what their longest single is' approach. Still, I can't fully knock that when it results in underrated favorites like "Estranged" and "We're In This Together." But my vote will probably come down to "Marquee Moon"or "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'."

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

frankie frankie

electricsound, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, in my mind, I don't think songs that are basic verse/chorus/verse/chorus with a long refrain at the end or a noodly midtempo solo (the "Hey Jude" formula, which describes half the songs on this list) are really suitably "epic."

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

WAHT, no "Sister Ray"?!

I guess I have to go with Cortez.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

This reeks of a 'come up with a list of bands, figure out what their longest single is' approach.

OTM

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

wtf heroin???

gershy, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ "Natural Milk Hotel"

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

The End - Doors
The Message - Grandmaster Funk
Ball & Buscuit - White Stripes ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03YUgHAshSo )

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Blue Monday

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

Should be Grandmaster Flash :~)

"Sister Ray" way over "Heroin"

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:36 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for JT.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:37 (seventeen years ago)

Bel Air by a nose. Completely random list though.

Pillbox, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

"marquee moon"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:45 (seventeen years ago)

"what goes around... comes around" is like the 3rd bet 6+ song on FS/LS.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:45 (seventeen years ago)

Dudes, I don't even like, like Frank Zappa or anything, but WILLIE THE PIMP C'MON!! If they'd picked better cuts by Kraftwerk, the Velvets or Neil, it might be something else though. I was also tempted to vote for "When The Levy Breaks" but I don't know if I just feel that way cuz I've been on a Zep kick today and for a few moments this afternoon was convinced they were the best band EVER. But, you know, "Maggot Brain" will win though. And it deserves to!

ian, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

"what goes around... comes around" is like the 3rd bet 6+ song on FS/LS.

It's not the best song on this list, but it IS the best JT song. If i were to put thought into this, I'd prob. vote "The Message"

Tape Store, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

you get the impression it was just the people sorting their itunes by length, looking at the list and choosing a few that no one else in the office had mentioned yet.

ian, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

"All Your Friends" is like the third best 7-min.+ on Sound of Silver.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:53 (seventeen years ago)

No.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

the rev=rongo hulkington, tonight.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

'Sad-Eyed Lady'. I blame Todd Haynes.

MaggieGo, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 05:57 (seventeen years ago)

Uh, disco?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 07:42 (seventeen years ago)

OUTSIDE THE STREETS ON FIRE IN A REAL DEATH WALTZ
BETWEEN WHATS FLESH AND WHATS FANTASY
HEY MAN THE POETS OUT HERE DONT WRITE NOTHING AT ALL
THEY JUST STAND BACK AND LET IT ALL BE

max, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 07:45 (seventeen years ago)

this is a horrendous list. grandmaster flash in a landslide, please.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 08:01 (seventeen years ago)

Sabbath on a RS list? What's wrong with this picture?
And that's a strange Stones pick, too. Isn't "You Can't Always Get What You Want" over seven minutes long?

Voted for Zep, who were, incidentally, the greatest rock band ever.

JN$OT, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 08:43 (seventeen years ago)

guys stop thinking rationally.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

between the Zep and the velevet underground, i'l go with Zep.

Zeno, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

Went for "B-Boy Bouillabaise" since I don't expect anyone else will. But no "Sister Ray"? "Mr Cale has yet to pay his dues," quipped Jann at a press conference.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:16 (seventeen years ago)

That list is so wtf that I'm tempted to vote for something ridiculous -- Mother Love Bone or something. But I can't do that because about half these songs are really fucking good.

No matter how good the song, I won't vote for something that isn't arguably that band's best epic, so that eliminates stuff like "Pictures of You", "Bel Air", and "Autobahn". That still leaves a handful of tough choices ... can't decide ... screw it, I'm getting the Led out.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

That list is shite.

Voted "Free Bird".

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

AUTOBAHN

John Justen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

BECAUSE IT'S THE LONGEST, AND THUS GREATEST EPIC.

John Justen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

MATH

John Justen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

it's not as long as thick as a brick

electricsound, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

Not on the list. It's not as long as lots of other great stuff not on that list either.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:53 (seventeen years ago)

not listed, not epic. trust the list, it is smarter than all of us.

John Justen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

The 12inch of "Blue Room" for example wau I want my copy back :(

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

Strickly speaking "Autobahn" is more picaresque than epic.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:55 (seventeen years ago)

The last cannot be taken seriously without "Supper's Ready". Have to take one more look to find something to vote for (after all there are lots of great songs in there). Probably "Starship Trooper".

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

Geir lost his heart to "Starship Trooper"!

Anyroad, No "Street Hassle" ?

(yeah, went for Marquee Moon of course)

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yes it's "Starshop Trooper". Would have gone for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" had they picked that one instead of "Sheep" (I mean, WTF?)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that was a pretty weird choice, too.

JN$OT, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

One song per artist, apparently--so no "Street Hassle" 'cause Lou is represented by "Heroin" (appropriately enough).

JN$OT, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

Their Led Zeppelin pick is unusually WTF. I mean, they left out "Stairway To Heaven" for that one?

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

Scenes From an Italian Restaurant - Billy Joel

instead of "Loan Me A Dime" by Boz Scaggs which is not only produced by Jann Wenner but is epic & great?

idolator will be milking this list for a week...

m coleman, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

And "Kashmir," too. Not that I mind, but still...

xp

JN$OT, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

I want to vote for Maggot Brain, but it's really just, like a solo (even though it's totally awesome).

So:

Sheep by Pink Floyd

They're all pretty obvious choices for me, but they're honest. (And yeah, what's with their uniformly lousy metal picks? Zep, Sab, and Met have far better epics to offer...)

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

A year ago it could've been either Bauhaus, The Cure, Bowie, Jane's Addiction, New Order or Neil Young, but now it's LCD Soundsystem without question.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

frankie teardrop you ponces

electricsound, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:18 (seventeen years ago)

Maggot Brain, easy.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

Is Mother Love Bone one of those bands, like Living Color or the Strokes, that RS declared the future of sliced bread and cancer research, and now feel wedded to defending their call? They're a sore thumb on this list.

bendy, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

I was just listening to Shadowy Men's surf-guitar cover of Autobahn, a reminder of what a transitional song it was, still grounded in the rock of the time.

bendy, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

Where/wow do I get that?

I always thought Autobahn would make an awesome track covered in an Oasis style (die Sonne sheinnnnneeeee der Glitzer schalllllll!!!")

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

Where/wow do I get that?

http://www.chunklet.com/index.cfm?section=blogs&ID=188

bendy, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

Blur have made worse songs, but "Tender" is definitely among their worst singles (and yet one of the "best" on "13")

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

No Papa Was A Rolling Stone etc

The Wayward Johnny B, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

When The Levee Breaks

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

Bel Air

o. nate, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

braveclub and Geir form unholy alliance of RONG

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Dear Bendy: Thank you!

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

Sabbath, Zep and Yes in Rolling Stone? What the hell happened over there?

War Pigs, in a close one over Levee and Starship Trooper.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

The sheer WTF-ness of that list is staggering - it's like some kinda bizarre parody of a list or something. But whatever...I'll go with Iron Butterfly because if I don't, nobody will. And because "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida"'s a REAL epic, and an iconic one at that, complete with much-maligned and tragically misunderstood drum solo.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

For a Rolling Stone list, it's not bad. I know that's damning with faint praise.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Am I the only one who's gonna rep for the Allman's?

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

why not "My Mummy's Dead" looped a hundred times?

smurfherder, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

"Purple Rain"

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

Came down to either "Layla" or "Station to Station" for me.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

WHERE IS FUCKING ORINOCO FLOW? That shit defines epic.

Abbott, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for jungleland fuck all y'all

ciderpress, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

Gold: "Starship Trooper"
Silver: JA's "Three Days"
Bronze: "Isn't It a Pity"

Joe, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

Orinoco Flow is under 7 minutes. Oh, how I wish it were longer.

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

Sabbath, Zep and Yes in Rolling Stone?

It's pretty interesting how journalistic perspectives are shifting. Their current online entry for Yes is actually pretty positive (a major change from the 80s album guide.) (Zep is on the current cover of course.) And Mojo had a near-reverent overview of Yes a year or two ago.

Sundar, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

When The Levee Breaks is possibly the best song on the list, but it's not an epic

Marquee Moon

gabbneb, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

True, it's not an epic--just EPIC!

JN$OT, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

Arse list.

I feel like making a THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS EPICS POLL just to make a point about how stupid this list is. Honestly. Rolling Stone = pants.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

HOT RATS!!!!!!!!!

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

Sail away
Sail away
Sail away

Abbott, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Autobahn". Irritating that Can and the Velvets are represented by the wrong tracks.

Tom D., Thursday, 13 December 2007 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

Where are Paranoid Android and Bohemian Rhapsody?

the next grozart, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

and Surf's Up?

the next grozart, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

"Won't Get Fooled Again." In a walk.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

"When the Levee Breaks" edging out other worthy choices because of the current Zeppamania sweeping the planet. "Street Hassle" would have definitely been my pick had it been included.

I'm confused by many of the representative choices and saddened by the exclusion of my favorite cheezy epic, Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion" - a song that's produced by Jim fucking Steinman, unnecessarily exceeds 10 minutes, and features an opera chorale. An egregious omission.

sleestak, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

Stupid, stupid list yes. "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" for me, of the ones that I love on here it's the most plausibly "epic."

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

Street Hassle and Funhouse are glaring omissions.

niceboy, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

The only way it could end, really.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

Won by an epic that is an epic after all.

"Close To The Edge" is way better though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

Odd that I voted for "Sheep" and it received 0 votes.

Nate Carson, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

Geir, nearly the whole list fits that category.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

i'd say "sweet thing/candidate/sweet thing" rivals "station to station" for bowie epic-ness. perhaps even "width of a circle" too.

no "paradise by the dashboard light", no credibility.
