Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

"Mr. Blue Sky", rather obviously. Easier than usual to make up my mind here.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

JILTED JOHN FTW!

Clout were dead unlucky. One hit, then the South African cultural boycott meant they couldn't tour/ break out, etc.

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:22 (seventeen years ago)

That was before Sean Rowley's Swinging Guilty Pleasures Acquittal Roadshow sorted them out, albeit too late to do them any good.

Has to be "Wuthering Heights" really.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

This is a TERRIBLE list. Wuthering Heights by a mile.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man, this is way more fun than the last couple of lists. "Baker Street," for the sax, and just for the hell of it.

xp hahah

JN$OT, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

Oh shit I missed Uptown Top Ranking in there. Damn.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

Shit, had I noticed it I would have gone for that one too. Oh well...

JN$OT, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:03 (seventeen years ago)

we're gonna bring a case of wine
and mess and fool around like we used to.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

Jilted John.

zeus, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

So much worse than 1979. What the fuck is Scott Fitzgerald & Yvonne Keely "If I Had Words"??!?!??!

Tom D., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:36 (seventeen years ago)

It's a pile of crap based on a classical piece. It is truly horrific.

What, no love for Dean Friedman??

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

"Airport! Ooh ooh ooh ooh-ooh..."

Tom D., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

Not a paticular good list - and I remember 78 being nearly as good as 77.

I'm gonna plump for Airport by The Motors cause I don't think anyone else will and it's a damned good song.

x-post.. er seems I'm not alone!

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

x-post

The classical thing that If I had Words is based on is Saint-Saen's Symphony #3, Opus 78.

Someone has just reminded me that the mice sang a version of it in Babe.

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

What a rubbish year. YMCA should walk this.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:54 (seventeen years ago)

A rubbish year unless you are heavily into "Grease", Bee Gees and Boney M, I guess.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

.. and that's exactly what it was like.

(Unless you were into...)

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

This is a TERRIBLE list.

Nooooooo! I love this list. This makes me so nostalgic. I did love Grease, the Bee Gees, Boney M, etc., in fact I even loved Showaddywaddy (but I was 5). I'm going for Baker Street, but I could just as easily pick any one of at least ten tunes here.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

If I Can't Have You

Joe, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

Jilted John, which my brother and I sang at a hip karaoke night in Pittsburgh this summer.

Fitzcarraldo, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 06:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Uptown Top Ranking"

Matos W.K., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

My undying love for Uptown has been chronicled here before, so with a clear conscience I can vote for the immense 'Dancing In The City' just to make sure that it doesn't score zero.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

Significantly better than 1977, but vastly worse than 1979. Has to be "Uptown Town Ranking" - although I link it more closely to 1977, when Peel was playing it on import every other night....

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 13:22 (seventeen years ago)

Terrible list? I am having trouble deciding between these options:

Night Fever
Baker Street
Too Much Too Little Too Late
Love Don't Live Here Anymore
Miss You
Stayin' Alive
If I Can't Have You

And I like some of those songs from Grease more than I care to admit.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

"Grease is the word... is the word... is the word..."

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Did I miss the 77 poll? Apparently. Or I forgot about it.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

Geir's working backwards on this one

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

This is a far better poll than the 77 one

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

Some of these others I don't know seem okay too (upon investigation).

"Dreadlock Holiday" is very strange. I've heard it before, but never paid any attention to the words, and the video is pretty bizarre.

Oh this is pretty good: Eruption - I Can't Stand the Rain. I vaguely know this song.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

Ann Peebles, innit?

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Sadly now known as a Tina Turner song. The Graham Central Station version is ace.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't know the song, except vaguely, so I hadn't realized it had been covered so many times.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Can't beat the orig.

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

There's a lot of great stuff here, but it has to be "Wuthering Heights".

snoball, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

Where the fuck is "Who Are You"?! Aw hell, I'll just vote for "Baker Street."

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I've even heard Jilted John.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

The "Gordon is a moron" bit would probably ring a bell if you heard it.

I think I voted for Denis.

onimo, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 08:27 (seventeen years ago)

Jilted John, which my brother and I sang at a hip karaoke night in Pittsburgh this summer.

I'm going to be in Pittsburgh this weekend! Where's the karaoke?

Joseph McCombs, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

Father Abraham & The Smurfs The Smurf Song 4

This is a joke, right?

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

Demand an I Love Polling board like I did!

JN$OT, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

twelve years pass...

Some amazing shit.
