Merkle man!

jim, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

No Lay is the one that everyone was talking about after that one came out and she is still the baddest MC in England for my 2p.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

Destruction VIP narrowly edges it over P's and Q's for me, but the "because fucking 'eard ya" bit on Unorthodox Daughter is the best individual MOMENT here.

I had trouble with Cock Back at the time and it leaves an even nastier taste in the mouth right now, Riko's verse still sounds great though.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

too true

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

Tim's right. It's Chosen One.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Da Rush"

mr x, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

'Chosen One'.

anyone think this dips in quality big time with the last 5 or 6 tunes?

I thought grime threads and poll threads existed on ILX in 2 completely seperate eras, like dinosaurs and humans.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 04:58 (seventeen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver is the timesplitter that brings them together

max, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:43 (seventeen years ago)

Is Cock Back more bothersome than numerous song from Biggie/Pac/Lil Wayne/etc.?

milo z, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:44 (seventeen years ago)

cock back is fucking dope

max, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 07:42 (seventeen years ago)

i remember i got this at the store and put it on right away in the car and i think 'cock back' left some pieces of my mind on the back window.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 07:45 (seventeen years ago)

It's because it's closer to home I think.

Ghetto & KT - Run The Road on RTR2 > almost everything here.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

Bruza is always BAD!

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

Actually the Doctor & Davinche track is up there as well, I remember the second half of sucking immensely though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

There are some good tracks on RTR2 ("Get Set", "Saw It Comin", "Serious", "Mic Check Remix") but like the first one there are definitely some duds (as usual Plan B is one of them, sigh.)

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

so is RTR2 any cop then?

Michael B, Thursday, 13 December 2007 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

i heard that the production was much more US hip-hop influenced than the previous disc thus missing out on what made grime so great in the first place (ie it's uniquely British sound) - but then again, i ain't got round to listening to it yet.

sam500, Thursday, 13 December 2007 07:58 (seventeen years ago)

'tings in boots' should been on one of these comps

Michael B, Thursday, 13 December 2007 08:05 (seventeen years ago)

Five of the first six tracks on RTR2 are pretty unfuckable with (Get Set, Gotta Man, Serious, Up Your Speed, Run The Road, all great).

The UK hip-hop tracks feel kind of out of place and I refuse to believe they're the best the genre had to offer - the Klashnekoff is worthy but dull and Plan B just rubbish. A lot of the rest of the grime stuff is useless toss (actually Kano and Demon's Mic Check is okay too).

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

cock back is fucking dope

^^^

voted that. i have no fucking clue what they're talking about or if it's offensive, though.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

ps and qs is number one? WTF?! i wouldnt mind all the love chosen one gets - i would like to see more conscious grime too - but it would be nice if it had a bit more of an exciting beat and riko sounded a bit more passionate like he does on most other things he does. targets one of those grime producers who just wants to make perfectly engineered buffed clean hip hop and R&B really.

"it's uniquely British sound"

most grime artists have forgotten about this already.

mr x, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

I should've voted. "Mic Fight" all the way.

danzig, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:35 (seventeen years ago)

The best thing about "Chosen One" is the production - I really couldn't care less that it's 'conscious-grime' and if anything that makes me feel suspicious towards it.

The notion of 'conscious-grime' (or, perhaps more broadly, the insistence that MCs be meaningful) did a lot of damage to grime ultimately.

Tim F, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

i thought the main problem with grime was that dude who kept repeating SERIOUS SERIOUS SERIOUS!!!

deej, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:26 (seventeen years ago)

hey tim totally unrelated but did u get my facebook message? re: 'sista'

deej, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:26 (seventeen years ago)

deej, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

i dont think you understand, there was actually a grime mc who repeatedly yelled 'serious' and it was very grating

deej, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

IT'S SERIOUS OUTSIDE

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:15 (seventeen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

"lol @ 0 votes for The Streets"

haha. yeah that tune was awful. completely out of place on this comp

sam500, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

"i thought the main problem with grime was that dude who kept repeating SERIOUS SERIOUS SERIOUS!!"

JME is amazing though!

"hey tim totally unrelated but did u get my facebook message? re: 'sista'"

Yes! Thank you! But i haven't yet been at a computer that will allow me to actually do what I need to do and then respond appropriately.

Tim F, Friday, 14 December 2007 05:14 (seventeen years ago)

Gimme Dat got diddled a bit here I think. I listened to it yesterday and of the great things about grime at that speed is that, as Tim's said, what the MCs are saying becomes practically irrelevant and its all about being able to ride an MCs flow. Of the single MC tracks, only P's and Q's and Chosen One really come close in this regard.

I haven't heard the Demon track here, surely it's better than The Rush though?

Matt DC, Friday, 14 December 2007 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

(Actually Cha Ching does as well really)

Matt DC, Friday, 14 December 2007 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

"The notion of 'conscious-grime' (or, perhaps more broadly, the insistence that MCs be meaningful) did a lot of damage to grime ultimately."

because every grime MC became conscious after chosen one came out? errrrr

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 14 December 2007 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

is it kano on the last verse of destruction vip? (he's either talking about himself in third person or it's some dude who's beefing with him, i totally can't tell) cause that might be like the hardest verse on the whole record.
