a poll for the lovely mess that is COME ON FEEL THE LEMONHEADS

"so i'm not gonna not knock things down"

swarming with song length half-ideas, clumsy lyrics, and pretty hooks, 'come on feel...' is a fragile and often unfocused affair that somehow holds its own as an interesting and compelling record. frequently relying on a tested songwriting formula characterised by predictable chord changes and dreamy vocals, the album as a whole is nevertheless wildly erratic and inconsistent. and perhaps, i would argue, all the better for it.

so what are we going to put forward as the best track?

sorry, i left out 'rick james style' and 'the jello fund'. i must have culled them from my itunes at some point or not imported them in the first place.

i'll be obvious and polite and point out that "into your arms" is one of the greatest songs ever, so there.

i had utterly forgotten this record until some dude playedinto your arms in a bar recently...really should dig it out...i used to get a few lines from "dawn cannt decide" suddenly and reasonlessly stuck in my head all the time...have a hilarious memory of being in the car with my mother when "big gay heart" came on wrpi...it made her uncomfortable...

Well, it is.

This album seems like two mini albums:

The first being the "wheee, our last album was a hit, here's some top tunes that we made totally inspired like!" (Into yr arms, Great bg no, Down about it, Dawn...)

The second being the "oh draaaag, it's all horrible, soul is lost, can I get some sleeeep?" (Paid to smile, Style (both), "Being Around (remake)", etc)

then they mixed them all up.

'Mrs. Robinson"

"Dawn Can't Decide" was an awesome b-side for "It's a shame about Ray", but the lyrics were inaudible. And as my g/f was called Dawn, I wanted to know what she could not decide.

This album's lyric sheet clarified everything, but hey: Dawn decided. (12 yrs married now)

"i'll do it anyway," and not just (but partly) for belinda carlisle. "i'm still a girl/ and it's just a horse/ and i got the reins".

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

i totally still get a rush approx 2:17 minutes into 'great big no'

also 'you can take it with you' is an unexpected alt rock gem, arriving as it does right at the end of the record

Any one the first 7, love 'em all, just can't choose between 'em.

Mrs. Robinson was a 'Shame About Ray' add-on.

I remember getting high in college and thinking 'Favorite T' was the best song ever. (This was one time)
