Johnny Cash - American Recordings. Your favourite?

I only have listened to #3 and #5. Out of those two Solitary Man wins by a landslide. Phantastic covers which Mr Cash seemed to have swallowed and totally made his own like One, Mercy Seat and [I See a Darkness[/i] intermingle with solid Cash songs. Is there any other album in this series coming close to it? <a href="TS: Cash's American Recordings, Unchained, Solitary Man or The Man Comes Around;>Here</a> is an old rather short ILM thread.

III is my favourite these days. His voice was so weak and frail on IV and V, so I've never been able to get into those records much (there are exceptions, e.g. "Rose of My Heart", where the frailty actually makes the song work).

Unchained, for the cover of "Spiritual."

Unchained. I've listened to dude since I was a little kid, and it's one of the best albums I've ever heard from him. "There ain't a hell of a lot I can look back on with pride/But I never picked cotton."

no way, #5 and #4 both had way too many highlights to be so low.

I think that's right. Just busted these out on Spotify this week -- I hadn't heard V or VI. Enjoying both considerably.
