TS: "squeaker" vs "gusher"

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Let your conscience decide.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

Quincy Jones Vs. George Martin. Normal I'd pick Martin, but not in this genre. George Martin was so right man at the wrong place in the case of "Say Say Say".

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

these lyrics from "the girl is mine" read like something from a bad soap opera or a samuel beckett play (same difference):

Paul: Michael, we're not going to fight about this, okay?!?

Michael: Paul, I think I told you, I'm a lover not a fighter

Paul: I've heard it all before, Michael. She told me that I'm her Forever Lover, you know - don't you remember?

Michael: Well, after loving ME, she said she couldn't love another.

Paul: Is that what she said?

Michael: Yes, she said it. You keep dreaming!

(pause)

Paul: I don't believe it!!

I cannot stand The Girl is Mine and have fond memories of the Say Say Say video, so that one.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

Oh fuck. Say Say Say.

Jellybean did great production on this song.

The Girl Is Mine just keeps Thriller from being a technically perfect album.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

the girl is mine is fucking terrible. say say say is great.

akm, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

I've grown to not mind "The Girl is Mine" -- it's so determined to be a G-rated (they say "doggone"!) ballad that of course it had to be the first single.

Anyone heard the Jellybean remix of "Say Say Say"? The freestyle-esque breakdown in the last minute is awesome.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

Ditto (xpost)

Trayce, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Say Say Say" probably would have sounded much better with Quincy Jones producing it.

That being said. you guys forget about "The Man". Which is their best duet.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 December 2007 00:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Squeaker" is British slang for "total fucking landslide," I assume.

"Say Say Say" easily crushes TGIM...the Hi-Tack mix of it from last year or so is also worth a listen.

musically, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:35 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't know George Martin produced "Say Say Say". Finally, something of his I like.

musically, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

say say say easy

Billy Pilgrim, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'd rather stick a rabid badger down my trousers than subject my ears to either, but come now -- clearly it's "Say Say Say."

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

when "Say Say Say" was #1 and H&O's "Say It Isn't So" was stuck at #2 for a few weeks an enterprising NYC deejay made a megamix called "Say Say Say Say (It Isn't So)."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

two of the WORST SONGS EVER WRITTEN.

which one do I hate least? Say Say Say

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

These are both really good in really different ways.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

I love it when they play-fight. But Say Say Say has a lot more urgency and is the better song overall.

I'll take State of Shock over either though.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 13 December 2007 04:47 (seventeen years ago)

"Girlfriend"

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 December 2007 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

This poll was over before it begun.

Also Girlfriend yes, absolutely, and the whole London Town album for that matter.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 13 December 2007 06:13 (seventeen years ago)

What is it that people hate about these songs? (Besides "doggone.") Is it like "We Built This City," where an otherwise pleasantly cheesy pop song is diminished by the c.v. of the people on the sleeve? I enjoy both of these songs (and voted happily for "Say Say Say").

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 13 December 2007 06:36 (seventeen years ago)

You're kidding, aren't you? We Built This City is a train wreck. They use it to herd hostage-takers out of schools.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 13 December 2007 06:45 (seventeen years ago)

dude i heard 'the girl is mine' AT A WEDDING last month. wtf?

maura, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

"The Man."

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 December 2007 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

They should do another track together again.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 December 2007 10:19 (seventeen years ago)

They could do an updated one called "The Kid is Mine" or maybe "The One-Legged Woman Is Mine".

Nate Carson, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

"That Pension is Mine."

JN$OT, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:24 (seventeen years ago)

They could do a cover of George Harrison's "Not Guilty."

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

Paul: Michael, we're not going to fight about this, okay?!?

Michael: Paul, I think I told you, I'm a lover not a fighter

Paul: I've heard it all before, Michael. You told me you wouldn't go behind my back with this thing. Those songs are mine.

Michael: Hey i need it more than you, i've got little mouths to feed!

Paul: So you gonna be a dick about this? You're not going to give me my songs back - i want my songs!!

Michael: Yes, that's what i said.. You keep dreaming!

(pause)

Paul: I don't believe it!!

Frogman Henry, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe Paul could trade a real working nose for the rights to "Yesterday".

Nate Carson, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

Yesterday
I had a nose it seemed to work OK
Now I gone and done and gave it away
just for the rights
to Yesterday....

Mark G, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:54 (seventeen years ago)

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

Say Say Say, though either is preferable to the wretched Ebony and Ivory.

dad a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'd rather listen to "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins and Philip Bailey on repeat play until bloody pus came out of my ears.

snoball, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

ditto. TS: Pablum vs. Dreck. Gimme Collins/Bailey anytime.

zaxxon25, Friday, 14 December 2007 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Say Say Say has been in my head for days thanks to this thread.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

"The Girl is Mine" is the sound of noticing you have erectile dysfunction syndrome for the first time while sitting in lukewarm water.

Z S, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

I'm just sitting back trying to imagine some chick having both Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson pining over her...

...and her choosing Herbie Hancock over both of them

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Wow -- that's a lot of votes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:22 (seventeen years ago)

"a squeaker"

The Reverend, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

Well.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 26 June 2009 14:03 (sixteen years ago)

four months pass...

I've really been feeling "The Girl Is Mine" lately - in particular, I love how Paul just totally gives up at the end! Not that he was putting up a strenuous fight or anything, but all MJ has to do is spin some cock-and-bull story about how he was chosen as the girl's "forever lover," and Paul is just done. He says "I don't belie--e-eeeve it," but it's clear that he actually does, the jig's up, and the wash of backing vocals mocks him out the door: "MINE, MINE!" You can manage to feel a little sorry for the guy even though it's Michael's album so this is kind of a foregone conclusion.

The one with will.i.am or whoever totally loses this quality - as far as I can tell, will doesn't even really talk about the girl, or the fight, or anything - he just keeps going on about "the way! I rock! the, way, I rock!" which isn't as compelling. I'm pretty sure the repetition of this phrase is just studio trickery but I like to imagine him standing in the booth for five minutes going "The way! I rock!" over and over.
