On purpose, choosing an act who is generally loved on ILM, and where lots of their fans would have some respect for most of their output.

Picking Single-Bilingual. IMO, those failed attempts at latino on that album were even worse than the singles from "Release". Also not too impressed by "New York City Boy", "Always On My Mind" works best as a ballad and "It's Alright" would have been my pick in its original horrible house version.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

one of these:

Liberation
Absolutely Fabulous
Single-Bilingual
New York City Boy
You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk
Home And Dry

blueski, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

i've heard perhaps 2 of the last fifteen of these so i can't really say if it's any of those, but i'd be willing to wager none are worse than 'absolutely fabulous'

electricsound, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

Liberation for breaking the amazing run

blueski, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

"Absolutely Fabulous," which I wouldn't even say I particularly hate, it's just really so-what.

sw00ds, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:10 (seventeen years ago)

"Liberation" is a great album track, not single.

The only dud on that list (which ranges to just-as-great to ok) is "Numb."

I'm With Stupid

abanana, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

HI DERE and I guarantee at least 2 votes for "Domino Dancing", but hopefully there will be more.

John Justen, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

Vote for "DJ Culture" and I will break your kneecaps. Or possibly I will frown at you through the computer so hard that you will feel it, perhaps in the form of an embarrassing rash or itch you cannot reach.

Telephone thing, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

paninaro. it's fucking annoying.

stephen, Thursday, 13 December 2007 03:48 (seventeen years ago)

HI DERE and I guarantee at least 2 votes for "Domino Dancing"

fuck you guys.

I might vote for "Go West."

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 13 December 2007 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

can't believe it won't be Numb in a cakewalk!

Ab Fab doesn't count, not credited to PSB

also Integral not included, probably the best off the last album (though Minimal was awesome live)

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 13 December 2007 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

"Integral" was only released as a downloads only, in the version from the "Disco 3" album. I felt it didn't count as a single. Plus it (at least the original) is great anyway, so. :)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:16 (seventeen years ago)

Too many to choose from. Anything after "Being Boring" qualifies.

DavidM, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Absolutely Fabulous, obv

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

Absolutely Fabulous. Was it an example of that nadir of Western music, the Comic Relief single?

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

I'm voting "Minimal", because they criminally chopped off the best bit for the single edit.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 13 December 2007 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

too many to choose from really. it's not like you hear 'absolutely fabulous' too often (ie ever!) whereas 'opportunities' or 'it's a sin', you still do after two long decades.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 13 December 2007 10:32 (seventeen years ago)

Worst off Discography would have been better poll.

ledge, Thursday, 13 December 2007 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

that would be Was It Worth It (as with TIC, final track syndrome - as if they agreed "we've put a mediocre one out at last, better release a hits comp in case this trend continues")

blueski, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

I always found "Domino Dancing" a bit boring.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

i think they're all pretty bad up to What Have I Done To Deserve This? and again after I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:35 (seventeen years ago)

blueski, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

Paninaro

zeus, Thursday, 13 December 2007 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

one of these:

You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk

Eh, that's one of the great PSB songs, and one of the best from their 'mature' (i.e dull) period.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 13 December 2007 12:02 (seventeen years ago)

Dunno. The title is great at least. One of the best songtitles ever.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 13 December 2007 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

best more like worst.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 13 December 2007 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

"Red Letter Day" - pop stars endorsing politicians = dud

snoball, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

i get along. awful

Alan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

"I Get Along" is okay. This is really a cage match between "Domino Dancing" and "Absolutely Fabulous".

HI DERE, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 23 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 24 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I guess I should have left "Absolutely Fabulous" off the poll, but happy to see that I am not alone in my "Single-Bilingual" hatred :)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 24 December 2007 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

AbFab is a worthy winner. Single/Bilingual is however GREBT, 2nd place is nonsense. (OK I don't really know the single version, but I think it's a wonderful one-two on the album.)

anatol_merklich, Monday, 24 December 2007 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

Being Boring 1

u crazy ^^

stephen, Monday, 24 December 2007 01:47 (seventeen years ago)

I AM NOT CRAZY.

Also, Absolutely Fabulous were awesome. Once I played it so many times in a row that the neighbours asked me to play something else.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 24 December 2007 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

that would be Was It Worth It (as with TIC, final track syndrome - as if they agreed "we've put a mediocre one out at last, better release a hits comp in case this trend continues")

Christ on a crutch, are you LISTENING?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 24 December 2007 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

mmm?

blueski, Monday, 24 December 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

Can one of the three mentalist haters please explain what is so bad about Domino Dancing? It's great.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 December 2007 02:48 (seventeen years ago)

I can't believe "Single Bilingual" was actually released as a single. It sounds so incomplete without "Discoteca" preceding it.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 24 December 2007 03:03 (seventeen years ago)

Aha fuck that explains my otherwise meaningless post above, what I meant was that Discoteca -> Single is a great one-two on the album. Thanks snrub. Can see that "Single" alone loses loads.

We have a Winner

Haha OTM

lol

taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago)

Ha! It's so true. Before Winner came out I'd struggle to think what would be their weakest single. I've never been that keen on Before, Was it Worth it ? and I Get Along but none of those are that terrible. Winner is their first truly awful single. What were they thinking putting that out as a single?

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 23 September 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago)

Before is OK but it was an odd choice for a first single. Se a vida é was the obvious choice from Bilingual, but I guess as 'summer smash', it was considered too early to release in April.

It's a weird album as it suddenly gets more commericial from Se a vida é onwards, opening with a string of atypical Pet Shop Boys songs.

'Separate Lives', by Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson (PaulTMA), Sunday, 23 September 2012 13:30 (twelve years ago)

I love the Deep Dish remix of "Se A Vida E" so much

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Sunday, 23 September 2012 15:27 (twelve years ago)

Meanwhile "Love Etc" felt like a worst in 2009 but now it's one of their very best. There isn't a week when I'm singing "I belieeeeeeve that we can achieeeeeeve the love that we need"

taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 23 September 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago)

Admittedly that is an insane statement

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Sunday, 23 September 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago)

I'll never understand why they realeased "Numb" as a single. It's so boring I deleted it from my copy of Fundamental. The version of "Integral" they released as a single was a weird choice. And why they kept "Fugitive" off the album is a mystery to me.

LeRooLeRoo, Sunday, 23 September 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago)

'Leaving is rather quite good in a 'Before 2' kind of way

I think I kind of hate the new album though.

'Separate Lives', by Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson (PaulTMA), Sunday, 23 September 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago)

yeah the new album is not the best

I am weirdly compelled by by "Ego Music" though

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Sunday, 23 September 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago)

Have been putting off listening to the album after the "Winner" single. First two tracks were great, maybe my doubts were wrong. If they must do wistful autumnal melancholia then that's the way to do it. Then we get "Winner" and then it's downhill, alternating between the bland and the bitter. Maybe he wouldn't need to rail against those who prefer their early stuff if the new work had something approaching a pulse. I'll give it another go for old times sake but maybe it's time to move on.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Sunday, 23 September 2012 19:40 (twelve years ago)

but maybe it's time to move on.

;_; i'm reading this in neal's voice.

second only to popcorn (or something), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago)

I thought Love Etc was a mess the first time I heard it but it grew on me so much and now I kind of love it. They have one great single per album these days, Leaving from the new one one, Love Etc from Yes and Minimal from Fundamental, which is a great album they just picked the wrong singles.

I have mentioned some of this in the Elysium thread, new album is a huge grower. Winner remains the worst song ever, Give it a go has an annoying chorus and Hold on should have been a B-side but the rest is solid. Nine really good tracks isn't bad going for them these days, it's certainly better than the two good songs on Release (Home & Dry and The Samurai in Autumn)

LeRooLeRoo is OTM about Fugitive, it might just be their best song in the last ten years or so.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 24 September 2012 06:56 (twelve years ago)

twelve years pass...

Purely where sound is concerned, it's quite possibly that the two 'winners' here are my two favourite PSB singles. Ab Fab goes straight to my eurodance pleasure centres, a showy moody melody as frenetic high camp, all it's missing is a gothic vocal drone (too on the nose maybe?) And Single-Bilingual is fantastic through and through but then it's off my fav PSB studio album anyways. One of these is Cappella and the other is The Goodmen.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Wednesday, 26 February 2025 19:06 (five months ago)

I was just thinking that the version of "Absolutely Fabulous" in my head is great, don't give a fuck about the show, can't be sure my memory of yhe song is accurate but it's a loop of lushness afair

Zurich is Starmed (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 26 February 2025 19:09 (five months ago)

I'm wondering if Single-Bilingual just did not work as a single, as it is great in the context of the album. But perhaps was one big WTF coming from the radio

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 26 February 2025 21:43 (five months ago)

I played it myself on radio a few months ago, separate from Discoteca, although James' Honest Joe was the track I played right before so it still framed by heavy drums. It's probably strange as a PSB single, placing its premium on energy rather than hooks.
