ILM, please help me remember this female rap group from the early 90s

OK...I can picture the video...def. early 90s....for some reason I think it was popular about the same time as RAM Squad that one song.

Two female rappers.

ALMOST positive they were from Washington DC.

track was laid back and cool, sort of different. not super lyrical east coast in terms of rhymes but not west coast either.

The chorus/hook/or title I'm pretty sure had something to do with time...tick tock...or 6 in the mornin' or midnight or something like that...

i think some of the lyrics were street storytelling type shit.

this is super vague but it's driving me nuts.

minor hit, never heard of again....video got a bunch of play though.

i thought it was conscious daughters too, that's right in line...but for some reason i'm totally sure they were from DC.

i might be wrong on the whole C thing i'm not sure...the DC thing really sticks in my head cuz there are never many rappers from DC.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

This is pretty good. I love threads like this.

i wish D.C. radio still played this song all the time instead of that Tabi Bonnet bullshit and the really bad pop Go-Go that's big these days.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, I like the pop go-go if you mean Mambo Sauce. I also enjoyed the female fronted CCB's "Classy" but they have since recycled the melody with different words on their latest not so strong single.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

who is big in go-go nowadays anyway, i wouldn't know anything past like EU and trouble funk and chuck brown and stuff like that...is it different now? less live band i'm assuming?

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Still live bands (guitar, bass, keys, congas, drums), just no horn sections. Chuck Brown is still big. Several of the younger groups have woman singers so they can go for a more straight-ahead r'n'b feel (that sometimes sounds poppy). These groups also have guys who rap to cover that end of things.

On New Year's Eve Chuck is headlining the 930 Club with Sugar Bear from EU opening, along with younger go-go band Mambo Sauce on first.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 13 December 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

yeah it's not all bad, and i'm not deep enough into Go-Go to know all the names (although I know some of the Mambo Sauce stuff). even Chuck Brown's recent stuff with the programmed beats was kinda cool. but goddamn I hate that "my fatty" song.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 December 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

there was some thread about a dude name Wale and i checked it out, he was supposed to be go-go hip hop but only one older sounding song was, the rest sounded like okay kanye-ish type stuff.

i guess he is popular in the blogosphere because he wears pants that fit.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 13 December 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I think Wale had one Go-Go-ish song I heard but mostly I think he's just regular rap and the press latched onto a "D.C. = Go-Go" shorthand in coverage of him. i'll give him his props, even though he's all caught up in Catchdubs/Mark Ronson world.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 December 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

this song is dope, never heard it before.
k def is on this???

deej, Thursday, 13 December 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Heather B had this pre "All Glocks Down" and maybe even pre "The Real World" track that I kind of wish I could remember the name of it. I have vague impressions of early 90s alterna-dopeness.
