Too hard at this point. I'll come back and probably vote for one of "Changeling", "I Travel" or "Someone, Somewhere (In Summertime)".

Tim F, Saturday, 15 December 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know why I posted this poll myself since I'll never decide.

I just listened to "Love Song" and goodness, that closing bit is still so ace. "IN-GLORY-DAYS...THAT-COME-AND-GOOOOOO..."

King Boy Pato, Saturday, 15 December 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

what's the one in that film?

Frogman Henry, Saturday, 15 December 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, "Film Theme" was an album track.

King Boy Pato, Saturday, 15 December 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

"Promised You a Miracle" is the best of the "New Gold Dream" singles, which automatically means it's their best single.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 15 December 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

"Love Song", the bit where the band kicks in over the burbling synthesiser noise is so thrilling. The lyrics are terrible! Never mind though. "New Gold Dream" probably just as good as "Love Song" really.
"Sons and Fascination" / "New Gold Dream" are so good. How could they fuck it up so badly?

Pashmina, Saturday, 15 December 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'll go with "Promised You a Miracle" (love the way that guitar sounds), but "...Catwalk" is a close second.

Everything after that was insufferable crap.

"Sons and Fascination" / "New Gold Dream" are so good. How could they fuck it up so badly?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

And the downhill turn started on "Sparkle In The Rain" already. That's where they transformed from a great new romantic pop band into a boring stadium rock band.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 15 December 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

But...I like "Waterfront"!

King Boy Pato, Saturday, 15 December 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

"Glittering Prize".

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 15 December 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

But...I like "Waterfront"!

Lots of people like "Alive And Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself".

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 15 December 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

OMFG i agree with geir! and alex's choices (though i don't think that SM's pre-"don't you forget about me" back catalogue is total crap).

Eisbaer, Saturday, 15 December 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, "promised you a miracle" does so effortlessly what those douchebags in franz ferdinand, et. al. so laboriously tried to do that it deserves to win for that reason alone.

Eisbaer, Saturday, 15 December 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

i've owned sparkle in the rain & once upon a time for years and have never listened to them. i like alive and kicking alright, though. and "Up on the catwalk" is pretty good.

def. "promised you a miracle" for me; basically what geir said

winston, Sunday, 16 December 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

"Someone, Somewhere"

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 16 December 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

The guitar at the end of The American decides it for me, though so many of these are great...

2for25, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm finding it hard not to vote "Promised You A Miracle" because it's, oh, only of the best songs ever AND it has "Theme for Great Cities" as the B-side.

King Boy Pato, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

I got a root canal to their best of!

Abbott, Sunday, 16 December 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

Hearing "Speed Your Love To Me" as a teenager was a revelation. So much energy to that, so thrilling. It's like being in a fast car!

Bimble, Sunday, 16 December 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

I was once driven from the airport by some deranged brother of a friend of mind who insisted on (A) driving with the windows wide open the entire way (it was in January in the midwest) and (B) playing "Alive & Kicking" and "All the Things She Said" BACK TO BACK TO BACK TO BACK the entire way. It was kinda like the narrative of PiL's "Poptones" -- only without the naked torture stuff.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 December 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

friend of mine, not mind, although "Friend of Mind" would make for a great prog rock band name.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 December 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

I was playing "Alive & Kicking" the other day, and that's my favorite of theirs.

Joe, Monday, 17 December 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

i add to the "someone somewhere" love.

andrew m., Monday, 17 December 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

"New Gold Dream," obviously.

Do. I. Stutter?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 17 December 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

"The American" - best last 30 seconds of any record ever.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 17 December 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 21 December 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "I Travel".

It's also the greatest opening track ever.

PhilK, Friday, 21 December 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

"The American." Just googled the lyrics and realized that other than the title and "What do you know about this world anyway," I know absolutely none of them.

Dan Peterson, Friday, 21 December 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

NASSAU CLUB DAH-YS

King Boy Pato, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

OH alright, but you folk don't really know what you're talking about with Simple Minds singles. Sorry.
