Voted "Welcome To My Nightmare" although "The Elder" and "Peter Gabriel" are very good contenders too.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

Love it to Death, though any of the first four ACs listed would suffice.

Some great stuff on here, but I thought Ezrin's resume would interest me more than it does--I really only care for those early Alice records. I have minor interest in the two Lou Reeds and the first Gabriel, and that's probably it. Producer polls are a cool idea, though--more!

sw00ds, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

Bob Ezrin did a Kansas album? That is a new one on me.

earlnash, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

I've giving my vote to Destroyer.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

no Detroit by Mitch Ryder no credibility you big dummmy

berlin

electricsound, Sunday, 16 December 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

Generally there isn't much value in his post-1980 work. Other than "The Elder" that is.

He did a good job for Kula Shaker though, and it isn't his fault that "Pigs, Peasants & Astronauts" just didn't hold up because of weak material.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 16 December 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't notice, but it seems he didn't produce "Muscle Of Love". Guess that's why it's so much weaker than the other stuff Mr. Furnier did at the time then.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 16 December 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

so, so easy. he may have been 'one of the best producers of the 70s' but the finest album on this list came out in 1997 :D

Just got offed, Sunday, 16 December 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

but the finest album on this list came out in 1997 :D

That's a dopey statement.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 December 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's dopey. The beauty of subjectivism! I'll freely admit I haven't heard most of these records, but I'll be surprised if I enjoy any of them as much as the one I voted for. Doubtless you're about to tell me to open my mind to Alice Cooper or something.

One of the albums in this list is the worst album I have ever heard, and if it wins a single vote, I will lose faith in ILM.

Just got offed, Sunday, 16 December 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Surely you must be taking about The Wall? Wholeheartedly agree with your first comment, been-there-done-that to the second point.

sw00ds, Sunday, 16 December 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Billion Dollar Babies--even though I might actually prefer Killer; BDB has better production, I think. The Wall will probably win, and deserves to--we are voting for best production work after all.

JN$OT, Sunday, 16 December 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not talking about The Wall. I expect some people to vote for The Wall. I'm talking about what came after it. Turned out the barrel had holes. Turns out the last straw was stuffed up the camel's ass. Turns out the most appropriate album-title of the 80's was also the greatest understatement of that decade. Turns out Roger Waters may have been the (slightly) talented one (sans Barrett) after all.

Just got offed, Sunday, 16 December 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for the Jayhawks' Smile, which is where Bob Ezrin gets his chance to produce Fleetwood Mac (albeit with worse singers). But it's a great sounding record for a band the critical boilerplate says was an alt.country band. That's right until the record before Smile, called Sound of Lies, which like this one is only alt.country if the Mac is (and I wouldn't say that).

Euler, Sunday, 16 December 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

Shocked and amazed he did Peasants, Pigs, and Astronauts. That gets my vote.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 16 December 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Look, Bob Ezrin's not the messiah. He's as fallible as the next guy. Anyone ever actually sit down and listen to Music from 'The Elder'? Good lord, it's crap (and I'm a Kiss fan!), and Ezrin would probably be the first to admit it.

That all said, I did go to the lengths to find the original front door used on the album cover...

The! Kings! Are! Here!

(Maybe not technically "better" than Love It To Death, but who cares! It is a great and almost nobody knows that so it deserves at least one vote!)

xhuxk, Sunday, 16 December 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

Are they of "Switch Into Glide" fame?

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 December 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yep!! "Switchin' To Glide"! This Beat Goes On"! "It's Okay" "Partyitis!" One and the same!

xhuxk, Sunday, 16 December 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't know he produced that!

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 16 December 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

fellow Canadians and all...

much of Bob Ezrin's success (at least on the Coop albums) be attributed to Jack Richardson, who engineered them under the Nimbus Nine moniker...

henry s, Sunday, 16 December 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, excellent Kings album - much better than you'd expect. That entire first side've made a great single if they coulda squeezed more than the first two songs onto a 7".

The Wall is gloriously produced indeed, but no way do I ever want to hear it again.

I'm going to say Welcome To My Nightmare. It's not my favourite Alice album - in fact, both of those '71 Cooper releases are better albums - just the most flamboyant.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 16 December 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

He only partly produced Saturday Night Wrist - they ditched him midway through for the guitarist from Failure.

Simon H., Sunday, 16 December 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone ever actually sit down and listen to Music from 'The Elder'? Good lord, it's crap (and I'm a Kiss fan!)

I love "The Elder". I'm not a Kiss fan though. "The Elder" is a wonderful Alice Cooper-influenced concept album. :)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 16 December 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

No "Crazy Eyes" by Poco = absolutely no credibility whatsoever.

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

Saturday Night Wrist is a great album title.

Destroyer for the win

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Berlin

ILX System, Monday, 24 December 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for "I'm Eighteen" Love It To Death.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 24 December 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

I'd vote for "The Wall," since a) it strikes me as an album that benefited from Ezrin's production style and b) it also strikes me as an album that wasn't overwhelmed by what Ezrin was doing. For example, "Berlin" would've been a much better album sans the awful, overblown production. Not that "Berlin" is a bad album so much as that it's a good album in spite of Ezrin's efforts.

ILX System, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I would have voted for Catherine Wheel - Adam and Eve, had I seen this poll in time.

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/feb/24/kanye-west-tells-producer-bob-ezrin-never-speak-in-public-again

Ezrin had written to the Lefsetz Letter – a music industry email written by Bob Lefsetz, which often offers succour to those who think music ain’t what it used to be – offering his thoughts on West’s career.

The Kidd With The Erasable Borad (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 11:53 (nine years ago)

I read that Ezrin email, it was very "old man yells at cloud"

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 13:57 (nine years ago)

One of the most underrated records in this list is surely DaDa, and I honestly wish that this is the path that Alice had gone further down in the '80s - strictly musical, of course, definitely not the intensely damaging lifestyle he was leading at the time - rather than the "hair metal" route. There's some neat production touches on that album as well, and I'd say that Ezrin and Dick Wagner were ultimately the huge driving forces behind that record.
