Best Abba Track EVAH!

Am stuck in a drunken debate about it. All the fire-dishonoring sheep maintain it's the hackneyed, overplayed, bloated whore of a song that is "Dancing Queen," but I'm demanding that it's the British Punk pre-figuring "S.O.S." that wears the goddamn crown! What say you....?

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, fuck me. "Mamma Mia"... c'mon!

(Fine, "The Visitors" for honorable mention)

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(thread rules: you have to defend your choice in the voice of a plastered, belligerent, pottymouthed Scot)

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Winner Takes It All" is the one I find running through my head the most. Therefore it is GOD of ABBA songs! (I like "S.O.S." a little more than "Dancing Queen" if I had to choose between your picks).

Alex in SF, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"S.O.S." shits on "Dancing Queen". Definitely one of their best. But "Gimme Gimme Gimme" is untouchable.

EdwardO, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is like asking what your favourite colour of M&M is. But if I had to choose, "The Visitors" above the others.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can never decide between S.O.S., The Visitors, Head Over Heels and One Of Us.

That they even managed to write four songs better than Dancing Queen just boggles my mind. God, how great were ABBA? What kind of magical space food did they have access to?

clotion, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's not ABBA it's crap!!! (I hope that was good enough, Brian.)

#1 = The Visitors. #2 = Dancing Queen. #3 = S.O.S.

Andy K, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i say yr all wrong, chiquitita is the best.

di, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmm, that is a good one. I have always had a soft spot for "Voulez- Vouz," though.

What kind of magical space food did they have access to?

Duh. Swedish meatballs...from the MOOOOOOOOON!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. "The Day Before You Came" - Because the ferkin' lyrics are bloody great.
2. "Knowing Me Knowing You" - Because the geetar solo is so...uplifting, and I don't even like guitars. Because of the "uh- huh"'s and "breaking up is never easy" theme is so Abba.
3. "Super Trouper" - Because I wanted to pick something nobody else would pick, and the synth bass-thingie on the chorus blows me bleedin' mind ev'ry bleedin' time.

Now who wants to FITE?

Keiko, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And, by the way, I don't understand why you're all picking "The Visitors". I like it, and all, but better than "The Day Before You Came"... Or "Dancing Queen", for that matter.

Keiko, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Waterloo."

adam, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Knowing Me Knowing You

it's the best I can do

brian one, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Visitors". PLEASE. Keiko speaks the truth (except for ranking "Super-Trouper" and that super-annoying chorus; soup-poup-er my ass). It's "S.O.S.", and it will always be "S.O.S." I will give a shout-out to "The Day Before You Came" and "The Winner Takes It All" (lyrical miscues aside). And "Thank You For the Music". And "Ring Ring". And, you know, most of their stuff.

Daver, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Visitors is fucking brilliant so shut it, you slag.

Also, I'd like to add "Our Last Summer" to my list of ABBA songs that are better than Dancing Queen.

clotion, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"S.O.S" kills all. After the obvious slaughter in the front yard of ABBA complex it raises a steel-toed boot to a steel door. It kicks down the front door, ridiculously large shotgun in each hand, and fires mercilessly upon "Dancing Queen", who cowers in the corner as wave after wave of perfect harmony hit her. "S.O.S" then retires to a pancake store down the street, where it orders a half-stack of pancakes with bacon.

tyler, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone appears to have forgotten Lay All Your Love On Me!!!

Daniel, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

S.O.S. over Knowing Me, Knowing You by a nose, with Waterloo right behind them.

J Blount, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Name of the Game" still gives me goosebumps. I think I may spend the rest of my recording life trying to capture something as good as the chorus to "S.O.S." though.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I say "Ring Ring".

Damian, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Honey Honey!!! i also have an admittedly incomprehensible soft-spot for Fernando... I find the beginning bits kinda irritating but then the chorus comes and I'm swept awaaay.

dave k, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Day Before You Came" is ace, but if you don't recognize the sheer genius of "The Visitors" ye havnae got a fookin' brain in yer haed!

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. The Winner takes it all
2. The Visitors
3. When All Is Said and Done

scott p., Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"S.O.S." fer sure, just for the pre-chorus bit that sounds like it was ripped from an ELP record! But "Lay All Your Love On Me" ain't no slouch. And "Dancing Queen" is great if only because it makes for an even tougher level than Slayer's "Raining Blood" in Vib-Ribbon.

original bgm, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Say what you will, 'Dancing Queen' is the best ABBA song AND YOU FUCKING KNOW IT.
'Like an Angel Passing Through My Room' deserves to be singled out for praise also.

DavidM, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "S.O.S." and "Honey Honey" best for their arrangements and their forgettable lyrics. "Honey Honey" has a gorgeous bridge. "Momma Mia" always sounded like really good Elton John to me. "Dancing Queen" is a great song but lacks the kind of imaginative details that makes ABBA special.

Curt, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Knowing Me Knowing You" overflows with hooks and they just get better and better as the song progresses, peaking at the gorgeous guitar solo after the chorus, as Keiko pointed out. Great lyrics too.

Vinnie, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would say my top 5 abba's are:
1. Chiquitita - who can deny the wondrous piano solo from benny at the end?
2. Knowing Me Knowing You
3. S.O.S
4. The Winner Takes It All
5. When I Kissed The Teacher

di, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Keiko, you are SO right about "Super Trouper." Arrives fully formed from the heavens. With "Honey Honey" and "S.O.S." directly behind it. "Honey Honey" in particular is a PRECISE evocation of being so crushed out on somebody who actually likes you too that you can't even think straight.

Douglas, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Keiko owns this thread.

I have always had a soft spot for "Eagle" tho'

Jeff W, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never can decide between 'Knowing You, Knowing Me' (deceptively cheery) and 'Chiquitita' (my favorite song as a little boy, the instrumental break at the end is so majestic). 'S.O.S.' is third though. Oh yeah and 'Summer Night City' is underrated, that song always sounds so...horny?

Omar, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Virtually everyone is on the money here - KMKY, Dancing Queen, SOS, Mamma Mia, Super Trouper are all perfection.

I have a soft spot for 'One of Us' at the moment. It builds from such an unpromising start - that snail's pace bassy chug - yet contains one of Benny and Bjorns most fantastic melodic twists. The way that the chorus soars heavenwards on the lines 'Staring at the Ceiling/Wishing she was somewhere else instead' is heartbreaking. Magnificent.

Dr. C, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So does anyone prefer the A-teens versions of any of these songs? Back when I was a foolish kid, I always assumed I wouldn't like Abba based on the two songs I knew - and then I heard the first a-teens album and couldn't stop listening to it, so that turned me right around. Anyways, their version of supertrouper is the one I always have in my head and the fake crowd noises + jackrabbit beat = magic!

dave k, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Oman for pushing SummerNightCity right up the disco floor (designed by IKEA) where it dances sleazy bits with the dirty man that is DoesYourMotherKnow?

Sitting with a cold shandy alone at the end of the bar, isn't that TheNameOfTheGame? She has some amazing....harmonies ;-)

Eagle = heaven!

I think The Album from '77 (?) must be my favourite ABBA

erik, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the track "The Visitors" is notable because at the beginning, you can hear the sound of Mario jumping up and getting a large gold coin which is floating in the air.

Many ABBA songs are structured perfectly - e.g. "Mamma Mia," which throws in that last "Yes, I've been broken hearted..." section just after the chorus swells to its peak, then ends with the jolly "Boo BEE boo BEE" sequence that started the song out. Good job ABBA.

I still have to go with "Dancing Queen," which is sublime, and it behooves me to extend my arm and index finger when they sing "YOU can dance, YOU can jive." It is imperative that you point to someone in your vicinity during the YOUs. It is not necessary to make digging motions, however, when they sing "dig in the dancing queen."

#2: "Dance (While The Music Still Goes On)" - lovely Spector homage. One of the best ABBA moments ever is near the beginning after the guy sings his bit, when everyone joins in and sings "Dance...".

"Elaine": underrated and wonderful.

"When I Kissed the Teacher": cute and somewhat disturbing. "I was in the seventh heaven"...tee hee.

The Headless Chickens cover of "Super Trouper" must be heard.

Ernest Paik, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

..as should be the entire ABBA tribute CD via Flying Nun roster called "ABBAsalutely"... at least for 3Ds doing "Mamma Mia", and Tall Dwarfs doing "On and On and On".

one month passes...
Excuse me, but why is everyone forgetting 'If it wasn't for the Nights'? Sublime. And recently I've been being lured in like a Koi Carp to the excellent morsel that is 'Move On.'

I suspect that no one would have a down on 'Dancing Queen' were it not played to death so very often.

And yeah, I'd go for 'S. O. S.' of the early work as well.

Tim Bateman, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Summer Night City - production-wise, anticipated Trevor Horn; and are they really singing "fucking in the moonlight" at the fadeout?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I still say it's "S.O.S"........and I'm right.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

There are not enough mentions of "Take a Chance on Me" on this thread. But yeah, "S.O.S." wins. Dancing Queen is pretty hard to take.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 16 April 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

The correct answer is "Waterloo", clearly.

or maybe, ok, it's "Fernando". or it could be "Dance {While the Music Still Goes On)" (all-time key change fest), or it could be "treat him well he is your brother", whatever that one is called, "The Day Before You Came", "Knowing Me Knowing You". ah fuck, i was just about to go to bed but now the revive is gonna make me stay up another half hour playing selected abba traX0rs...

"Honey Honey." Bonus points for being just as catchy in Swedish.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 16 April 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

The one and only answer is "Lay All Your Love On Me".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 16 April 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

There usually isn't a right answer, except when there is, and there is. It's S.O.S, and you know it. Ask your moms.

In the wake of that, you can haggle over Waterloo, Knowing Me Knowing You, Chiquitita (my fave as a little girl), Super Trouper, Mamma Mia, Take a Chance On Me and/or I Was Made for Lovin' You.

Dancing Queen doesn't enter into it.

Still voting for "Lay All Your Love On Me" although "Head Over Heels" deserves a mention too. Their early 80s synthpop material is terribly underrated.

I was out at the same twee indiepop disco night as Stew when they played SOS, and it was a thing of joy, a lightbulb going on over my head with the instantaneous realisation that it's the greatest Abba song ever. But that only lasts until you hear another one. I think, if forced, I'd probably go with "The Name of the Game", but don't quote me on that as my answer will be different in about ten minutes.

I found my copy of Shales' book about Saturday Night Live yesterday, and it says that ABBA's performance was totally lip-sync'ed. But watching the Season 1 DVD, I would have sworn that while the instruments were recorded, the vocals were live. They did a good job lip-syncing if that's what did. And OMG, Agnetha's tight silky jumpsuit, practically painted on, SO HOTT.

Lurker for many many years, but apparently this thread is the one to send me over the edge into commenting on something. The power of Abba.

Is As Good As New considered a 'deep cut'? It's the opening song on one of their biggest albums, but don't often see it being mentioned. It sounds incredible. The 'my my my my' bit is one of my favourite Abba moments. It is hampered slightly by the last 10 seconds - reminds me of any music on Harry Hill's TV Burp ending in 'cha-cha-cha'. Even so, a triumph.

Phobail, Saturday, 17 August 2024 11:23 (ten months ago)

It's possible that ABBA are the band I love with the most tracks I hate (it could be the Kinks, but their recording career is three times as long). Tweeness, shrillness, and unfunny humour are the usual culprits in the songs I don't like, but I acknowledge that a lot of the songs I love could well be judged as pretty twee or shrill. So it has something to do with the melodies catching me or not.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 18 August 2024 11:22 (ten months ago)

It’s sad to me that their albums weren’t more consistent. Barely any leftovers, they would just work their asses off on those 10-12 songs.
