On a scale of 1-10, I'm at, like, 15:
UTR: I wanted to ask you about the genesis of the Gutter Twins [the project Dulli began with Mark Lanegan]. You said you have some songs completed. How did that project come about?
Greg: Mark and I had been friends for a long time. Mark and I started actually working together in 2000 briefly on some of his songs. And then I played him some of mine and then we sort of talked about doing something together, but that wasn’t the Gutter Twins. And then he got the Queens [of the Stone Age] job and took off with that and I continued on with what I was working on. And then Ted died and then I restarted and then Mark came back in after than, because he’s on Blackberry Belle. And then I played on his record, and then he toured with me and I toured with him and at the end of me touring with him, that’s when we talked about doing a record together.
UTR: So it was just common sense at that point.
Greg: Yeah. We were gigging together and hanging out together all the time. You can do good or you can do bad, and we decided to do a little bit of good [laughs]
UTR: This is a strictly a rock and roll project, correct?
Greg: It’s kind of rock and roll. It’s actually a little bit more…there are country and folk elements all over it, and there are electronic elements too. It’s a strange record. It’s strange. It doesn’t sound like either one of us.
UTR: Do you split the vocals?
Greg: We split vocals. and there’s a couple songs that we sing top to bottom in harmony. There are nods to The Everly Brothers. There are nods to Simon and Garfunkel. There are nods to The Stooges and Primal Scream too.

Hmm! Looking forward to this much more for Lanegan than Dulli.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)
Funny - I was thinking the opposite!
I do love Lanegan, though...

Anyone know anything about a second Mark Lanegan/Isobel Campbell album being in the works? (a belgian music site says it'll be out this Spring)
― StanM, Thursday, 7 February 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)
Nevermind - they probably just found it at Isobell's Wikipedia page ("A follow-up to Ballad of the Broken Seas with Mark Lanegan is in the pipeline entitled "Sunday at Devil Dirt" with a tentative release date of Spring 2008.")
― StanM, Thursday, 7 February 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)
So yeah, this is great.

Semi-related, here is Greg Dulli's Valnetine's Day mix for Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/02/14/greg-dulli/
― stephen, Saturday, 16 February 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)
Valentine's Day, even
you know what - 'this must be what jail is really like' came on the shuffle today and I said - damn - I'm now officially psyched for the Chicago show I'm heading to in March - what's the bets that a few whigs songs will make the set list?
― BlackIronPrison, Saturday, 16 February 2008 05:00 (seventeen years ago)
Apparently, they played a couple of solo Lanegan tracks, a Screaming Trees song (shadow of the season) and a couple of Twilight Singers tracks at the first show in New York. No Whigs, as far as I know. (this is just from reading a quick comment on another board, haven't seen a setlist yet)
― StanM, Saturday, 16 February 2008 07:19 (seventeen years ago)
Ah. summerskiss.com has the setlist and there's no Shadow Of The Season on there (or it's been renamed?)
New York 2.14.08 (Bowery Ballroom)

god I love greg dulli's voice. 1969 is one of my favorite albums ever. Im liking this a lot

1969 is one of my favorite albums ever.
You must like it, seeing as you got the title wrong.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2008 07:54 (seventeen years ago)
Judging by his nickname, that's probably a freudian typo...
They were so so good last night! The band's got a great groove when they get going - that Fountains of Wayne drummer is doing a great job. Dulli was his great sleazy self, laying off the guitar & picking up the mic for some serious crooning/preaching for one song in the encore - good fun to watch :) Mark Lanegan was Mark Lanegan. Left hand on the mic, right hand halfway the stand, nodding his head carefully while waiting for his lines - during which his eyes closed and his hands firmed their grip and That Voice was released. Raaah! So great. The new songs sound great (can't wait to hear the album) but I must say that the covers ("Live with me", "Down the line") were somewhat of a highlight. What an evening. Only complaint - no cd/vinyl for sale and the best shirt was no longer available in "M". Ah well..
― willem, Sunday, 24 February 2008 09:07 (seventeen years ago)
I just pre-ordered the 180g 2xLP from Sub Pop. $12 + $12 s&h. You get a coupon in the lp for a free download too.

even though his vocals drip with the greasy soul and anguished lasciviousness that have long been his hallmark, they can’t withstand Lanegan’s weight of a thousand tombstones baritone. When he steps in, it’s like every light in the room dims and the temperature drops by ten degrees.
Out next Tuesday - do check out the real thing, it's a lot better in stereo (forget that crappy mono stream from upthread, the actual record sounds at least 40 times better)
― StanM, Friday, 29 February 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I have a full-art/full-everything promo copy, it's excellent.
― stephen, Saturday, 1 March 2008 07:40 (seventeen years ago)
Sounds much better on the CD with a nice stereo. Great album, full of soul, very *very* dark.
How did you score a promo dude? (aka I didn't realize you wrote?)
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 1 March 2008 07:52 (seventeen years ago)
Cheapo on Lamar & 10th, promos come in all the time before actual release :D
― stephen, Saturday, 1 March 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
This is kind of the rock version of getting the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper together, isn't it?
― Matt DC, Monday, 10 March 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 6 April 2008 23:39 (seventeen years ago)
wow, this is grim. I'd never heard anything by lanegan before. what a voice.
― daria-g, Saturday, 12 April 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)
I've never been too keen on Lanegan, but this is great.
― BigLurks, Saturday, 12 April 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)
Apparently Dulli collapsed on stage during the show in Brussels (after nine songs) and the band played another three songs without him, but he's recovered now and the tour has restarted.

I had a ticket for that show but didn't go - migraine/cluster headache (to be diagnosed soon, hopefully) - still, they may be back soon, so maybe I'll be able to see them then.
― StanM, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)
Not to be skeptical, but are we sure it was "dehydration and hyperthermia" sans anything else? Was it possibly drug-related? Those are both symptoms that could be induced by, say, opiate withdrawal. Like I said though, not trying to be skeptical here, just wondering, and hoping for the best...
― stephen, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
No idea, hoping it isn't too serious as well, but he wouldn't be the first foreign artist who mistakes some of our stronger Belgian beer for something it isn't.
