Cracker like a motherfucker.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm only familiar with a few tracks outside of Kerosene Hat, but that's a great record. They seem the least detached of this mid-90s trio of detachedness.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

cracker is teh suxx

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, cracker were bad. there was a horrible period of time when they were always on mtv and i hated HATED david lowery's boyhood friend in the band. johnny galicky or whatever his name was. cuz i knew for a fact that if he hadn't been friends with david lowery that i never ever would have had to know who he was. so i guess i should hate david lowery.

i got nothing against cake. i'd probably like a cake album if i heard one. my boss at the korean deli, jim kim, LOVED cake. jim kim's daily exercise regime involved very heavy swords and he owned a large collection of bound volumes of heavy metal magazine. and he loved the band cake.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

I've only heard the singles by Cake, and I like those well enough except for Going the Distance. I would give them a chance if I could get the album out at the library. My guess is that there's a whole lotta filler going on there.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

You know who belongs on this poll? Geggy Tah.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

Cracker. I never listened to Soul Coughing, but "Nostalgia" and "Big Dipper" destroy anything Cake put out.

clotpoll, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

disapprove

pc user, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

Cracker for me, I love that first album a lot, and think Kerosene Hat pretty good ("Eurotrash Girl!" and a cover of "Loser"), though after that I lost track. All I know by Cake are the big singles and they're nothing I've wanted to go back to. Maybe they were a gateway to more beats-based music for some indie kids, at least that would be something good about them. I don't know Soul Coughing.

Euler, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

Soul Coughing are actually a really interesting band. Cake are shite. Cracker I don't know much about. And I love Doughty's work with TMBG. So I'm going with SC.

Trayce, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

I seriously hated Cracker and Cake but really liked Soul Coughing.

joygoat, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

yo wassup w/ ILM's late-90s nostalgia all of a sudden?

i don't really like any of these bands, but i voted for cake b/c i liked their singles (except "going the distance").

cracker gets points deducted b/c they were such a letdown from being ex-camper van beethoven. and i never understood the appeal of soul coughing AT ALL.

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think all three of Soul Coughing's albums are pretty good, and extremely underrated. Cake - I would save about half of Fashion Nugget and a few miscellaneous singles. Actually, I made a mix CD like that one time and it's pretty okay. "Daria" is the real gem. Cracker are completely unnecessary and forgettable.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

I feel like this poll is missing the Spin Doctors, the Counting Crows, and Soul Asylum.

I would like to join in Cake nostalgia, 'oh their singles were really awesome!!!' but I just can't do it anymore.

I didn't realize Johnny Galecki from "Roseanne" was in Cracker. They don't quite fit into the weird quasi-rap category as the other two bands, though, weren't they just kind of vaguely rootsy alt-rock?

I loved Soul Coughing at the time, still think the rhythm section were great musicians and the sampler guy had a pretty unique approach to the, er, 'instrument' that noone's really done the same since. Haven't listened to them in years, though, should probably dig out those albums and see what I think now.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

Soul Coughing was goofy hip-hoppy beat jazz alt-rock, Cracker was goofy country-cover rootsy alt-rock, Cake sits between them like lukewarm water. All had a penchant for colorful phrases like "disgraced cosmonaut."

I just borrowed the three Soul Coughing albums from a friend a month ago, had Irresistable Bliss back in high school. My fave is easily El Oso, he sings the most on that, prefer it to the poetry jam thing. Never owned a Cake album though my college girlfriend bought me a few in a "bowling ball named Homer" way for my birthday (they never left her apt). I like a handful of their singles. Cracker has a handful of good songs too (loved them in middle school), but they suffer from not being Camper Van Beethoven.

da croupier, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

It's odd how the last CVB album's best stuff are his tightly written songs and its the ersatz musical hoo-ha that's annoying, and yet his next band's tight song albums are pretty whatevs.

da croupier, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 06:35 (eighteen years ago)

I was such a Soul Coughing super fan in High School, to an embarassing degree.

James, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, this should've been Coughing-Cake-Cibo Matto.

jaymc, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Soul Coughing because I am from Minneapolis.

Matos W.K., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

You are goinggg to Minneapolis-ah, to write a poll about bands who murder each otherrruh...

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, what's the Minneapolis connection? I thought they were from NYC.

jaymc, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

They were HUGE in Mpls.; like seven sold-out shows at First Ave. or summat.

Dan Peterson, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i believe Soul Coughing was one of those bands that ended up with a big Minneapolis following because of KREV in the mid-90s.
