An album every how long?

What's acceptable as an interim number of years between albums? What's unacceptable for you? Does it piss you off to wait for a new record for years on end?

normally i don't care. sometimes i get frustrated if it's been +4 years, depending on the band obviously. sometimes it's equally annoying if a new record comes very few months, then i can't keep up. but for the most part it doesn't make much difference to me.

First three albums: every 13 months
Fourth to eighth albums: every two years
Ninth albums and onwards: about twice a decade

Someone should barchart these.

It's in relation to how 'vibrant' the originating scene is, usually.

The Jam and Buzzcocks issued their first two albums within a year. So did the beatles, I think. All three continued with fairly quick turnarounds.

Oasis started off quite quick, then their slowdown was more in relation to having tons of money and being perfectionists arsed.

It's not the time between that bothers me so much as when the release date keeps getting pushed back. I wouldn't mind if the final product represented the longer time it took. Like, in video games, frequently (tho not always) a delayed game will show the polish of the extra time. I feel like albums are much more hit+miss, tho, and sometimes you wait an extra year and the album is still crap.

Most big artists wait 2-3 years, and as most new artists suck, that is something one must accept anyway. I am a bit pissed off by people who wait 5-6 years or more between albums, although I am still ready to buy it when it arrives (like "Up" by Peter Gabriel, for instance, an excellent album that probably would have sold better had it been released 5-6 years earlier)

Sabbath dropped their first three in less than a year. Each one a fucking masterpiece.

If you're too prolific I can't afford to keep up with you and forget you altogether.

Billy Childish has averaged about 4 albums a year since 1979. This is probably too many.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

wow. that's like an album every 3 months. which is like, a song a week. i mean i guess that's doable?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

The time between albums has got longer in the last decade or two. In the 70s an album every 9-12 months seemed to be the norm. Bowie for example, from 1969 to 1980 had a dozen or more.
