These places are closing tomorrow permanently in honor of The Crocodile
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:14 (eighteen years ago)
Sorry, drone/a/saur... I know the Croc was pretty much the top of the game about 10 years ago, but this whole The Croc = Everything Seattle Stands For In Live Music Today thing is just getting pummelled, which would be fine if it weren't giving more credit to the owner who basically fucking betrayed her employees without warning.
It's sad that the place was losing money, but locking the keys without even letting your loyal booking person know (after having booked FIVE FUCKING MONTHS OF SHOWS) is beyond Office Space bullshit.
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:19 (eighteen years ago)
that club's felt dead for 5+ years. it was great a long long time ago, and hasn't been for even longer. i am sad for the employees though
― jergïns, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)
a friend and i were talking tonight about what it could be like as a venue if it were gutted. the place always felt like a big misuse of space. i mean, that pole, charming maybe, but c'mon.
― jergïns, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:24 (eighteen years ago)
haha, it's funny because we ALL ended up being behind that fucking pole whenever the headliners started. It defied physics.
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:27 (eighteen years ago)
Shit. Forgot to mention The Vera Project in the above venue list...
...you know the ones uh closing tomorrow in honor of the Crocodile
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)
Anyway, great memories of the place nonetheless. Saw Unwound there too many times to count. The Melt Banana and Numbers show was a treat, if anything to see Calvin Johnson start his Dance Pit Of One.

x post Sorry, drone/a/saur...
never thought anything of the comment. merely wanted to share with those outside the northwest the croc info. i feel bad for anyone who loses employment at this time of year. personally, i never made it to this particular venue.
― drone/a/sore, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:46 (eighteen years ago)
Well, it was a well-known place.. not quite CBGB's level of universal fame, but next best for Seatown I gather.
I felt worse when I-Spy and Second Avenue Pizza closed, though, and that was actually a bigger loss for their respective area of booking at the time.
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)
the loss of the velvet elvis was the worst for a scene i was a part of.
― jergïns, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:53 (eighteen years ago)
Basically the lesson is
Fuck Belltown

― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:54 (eighteen years ago)
i saw matthew dear at the crocodile a month ago and i couldn't believe that there was only one bartender on (a saturday) at the back bar
― jergïns, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:55 (eighteen years ago)
Well, the one good thing to come out of all this publicity that seems to be national now is that a bunch of folks are trying to collaborate to buy the place back -- which is really cool, but I'm not holding my breath on a major renaissance of that space either.
Forgot to mention that the McLeod Residence is nearby, and probably deserves a lot more attention than the Croc these days... and hopefully the Lava Lounge and Shorty's will remained untouched.
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:58 (eighteen years ago)
rip it up and start (in the same spot) again
― jergïns, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:00 (eighteen years ago)
I kinda feel sorry for the bookers of all the other clubs in town now, having to carry the weight of all the Croc bookings that were done 'til May '08 now dissolved. I mean, it's good for business, sure, but those folks running the places are going to get negative sleep.
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)
I think I saw more concerts at Easy Street Records in the past 2-3 years than I did at the Croc. :(
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)
Spooky. Just this week, their booker were asking me to set up a show. Glad I didn't!
I played there a few times. Good sound, but otherwise seemed kinda overrated to me.
I probably like Sunset Tavern the best up there.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)
Nate, are you local?
We Seattle peeps often stick together, occasionally do stuff. If interested, say Aye. But it's up to you. :)
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)
Awwww man. I played there several times, the most memorable of which was opening for Destroyer. That place had the best onstage sound in all of Seattle.
But yeah, that pole...
― Davey D, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
May of '06, maybe? I saw that one. (I don't think I made it for the opener)
and yeah the layout was v. poor.
― will, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)
Yep, that was the show!
― Davey D, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)
if anything, the sound guy will probably get a job at another venue pretty soon. About a third of the woes have been "Holy shit, that sound guy was GREAT". I hope he moves up.
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
Man, I leave town for one weekend and this happens :( but, as Mackro has pointed out, there'll be plenty of clubs to pick up the slack. I will miss the pancakes, though!
― Morley Timmons, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)
It's all your fault.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)
Hey Mackro I'm in Portland. But I make it up there fairly regularly. Yes, the sound was great. That guy from Slave Traitor did sound when I last played there...
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)
xpost I know, right?
― Morley Timmons, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)
Ugh, just a month or so ago I was moaning about the breakup of Mr.& Mrs. Buck because I was afraid this would happen. It was really all about the sound guy for me, I got used to the damn pole.
― the higgs, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)
i've heard that about you
― jergïns, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 07:03 (eighteen years ago)
We lost Satyricon a few years ago in Portland. It's back under new management now. If a club is that loved/revered, someone will very likely resurrect it.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 07:34 (eighteen years ago)
Satyricon is still open, but god knows whose running it. Funny thing is that the exact same looking dudes are still hanging outside that place now as they were in '96. It's like the exact same Subhumans leather jacket is past on manager to manager.
― Darin, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)
I will respectfully disagree with the higgs. In the Weekly last week, Stephanie Dorgan was blaming her extended touring with Mr. Buck for the club's rocky (get it?) road. How much has R.E.M. toured since 2001 or whenever? Come on.
― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)
but hasn't he done a fair amount of touring w/ The Minus 5 and Robyn Hitchcock? (Maybe?)
― will, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)
I'm just saying that having access to REM trust fund probably covered some financial shortfalls regardless of management/absent management.
