Sometimes I think the Llorca remix of "A&R" is amazing and sometimes I think it's not so much. But search that.

The second comp is "pretty good" but apart from that track it just doesn't leap out at you hugely. I should listen to it more though. It's definitely got super-high production values.

is this at all central to the whole "new deepness" thing? is this stuff not sort of a big deal in the "innervisions" axis" or is it just central to comps w/ names like "erotic house vol 3" and "a taste of hotel lobby chillout"

search: i like the manuel tur & dplay a lot, and the motor city soul is kinda cool.

i bought the trickski one, after hearing 'sweat' on the carl craig fabric mix, but it sounds very different and i didn't like it much.

from the samples i've heard, the phreek plus one releases have a kerrier district/metro area sound, but i've yet to buy either. should i?

depends how much you like metro area, right?

I don't think of Compost Black Label as having much to do with "the new deepness".

It's more like a combination of Poker Flat/Dessous/Get Physical all circa 2003/2004. It's very sharp and defined and glossy sounding, whereas the stuff taking cues from deep house is mostly very damp sounding.

It's nice to have both - when I first heard the Compost Black Label comps my first thought was "It's sort of good that there's always at least one label (or 'end of the scene') repping for post-Metro Area percussion at any given point in time."

The "new deepness" to me is much less obviously disco-influenced or post-electro-house and more like a straight fusion of minimal with deep house - so it's Liebe*Detail/Sebo K/Efdemin/Dennis Ferrer's euro-sounding stuff/Henrik Schwarz/Jerome Sydenham/sometiemes stuff that Luciano plays out (but not really Luciano tracks).

My top "new deepness" tracks of the year would be stuff like:

Matt John - Soulkaramba
Dennis Ferrer - Son of Raw (Alex Smoke Remix)
Mari Boine - Vuoi Vuoi Me (Henrik Schwarz Remix)
Dennis Ferrer - Transitions
Son of Raw - A Drum, A Lightstick and a Fixture
Ed Davenport - Eyespeak
Argy - 1985 (Jerome Sydenham & Rune Remix)
Motorcitysoul - Space Kätzle (Sydenham Blacktro Penetration)
Efdemin - Just A Track
Jacopo Carreras - Olanto (Lee Jones Remix)
Minilogue - Birdsong
Einzelkind - Maferefumeco
Michal Ho - Take Away
Tiger Stripes - Hooked

Oh and of course the countless edits of "Rose Rouge"...

OK thanks for the clarification.

the "black label vol 1" comp is at times *very* detroit techno, not in a moodymann or theo parrish way but w/ a very strong octave one or saunderson or carl craig flavor. sweeping chords and stuff. at times also very broken beat - alex attias just did one for black label. still pondering but i think "black label vol 1" is choice.

they need a better a+r though. i'm sure they make megabucks off licensing to "buddha bar" and "erotic lounge" and other comps but they lose a lot of cred that way!

..not sure what to think of this label but SEARCH; Silk & Schmoove EP from Move D.. Rolling Hills is a nice cut, like Secondo cutting up a Metro Area track.
