chap, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I've been playing it over my Astor Piazzola MP3s.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

v easy to make him sound like he's spitting innuendos. "TAKE IT DOWN SOUTH, THAT'S BIG UGHNNN"

Ronan, Friday, 15 February 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

my favourite was a one-off, in the 'break to the beat' days (which you couldn't have now for multiple reasons):

bombastic intro to unremembered classical piece, sampled on unremembered hip-hop track, "I'm feeling this" or words to that effect: then it turned to jaunty classical sleighride music and he made it clear that he wasn't. so many resonances.

another one is what sounded like "oh my days", which I always thought was "fuck, what an extraordinary life I've lived, I can't believe I'm doing this now" in code (though it probably wasn't)

there's a definite parallel between Westwood's shows and Alan Freeman's Saturday afternoon rock shows of the 1970s: they were/are both a generation older than most of the people whose music they play, and they both grew up before that music existed. so Fluff had, and Westwood has, a sense of miraculous faith in the music, which created/creates a portentous, ultra-dramatic atmosphere which younger DJs playing the same music in both eras have lacked. Westwood gives the sense that he's still pinching himself that hip-hop even exists at all, just as Fluff used to do with rock. the comparison may seem absurd and unfounded, but both have made radio an event.

others that should have been here:
"the man who stands next to the man"
(most recently) "the billion dollar voice" and "Mr Hot Forever"

of course it is unreal. but context explains all. what for us is routine, the norm, for him is still a miracle.

February Callendar, Saturday, 16 February 2008 02:48 (seventeen years ago)

there needs to be way more samples on there. plus, it sounds like theyre not from real shows and have been done especially for the webpage which isnt as special. i like my westwood catchphrases live and uncut son.
