Poll: Eno as a producer

I didn't find a complete list of his production work at Wikipedia, but hopefully I have managed to include most of it. Leaving out his solo work and work with Roxy Music anyway

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

I obviously had to go for "The Lamb Lies On Broadway" although I admit Eno probably contributed more to most of the others here.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

Eno did not produce the Berlin trilogy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

Eno didn't 'produce' Low or Heroes you fucking muppet.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

I like how I phrased it better, Alfred.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

He didn't produce The Lamb either - John Burns and Genesis did. All he did was provide 'Enosifications' for 'The Waiting Room'.'

Guilty_Boksen, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

Depends on how you defend "producer" although I agree I was in thin ice when I included "The Lamb..."

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

on

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

wo ist slowdive?

impudent harlot, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I like how I phrased it better, Alfred.

Much more elegantly, Nick.

I'm tempted to vote for Zooropa for contrarianism's sake (or, hell, Laid), but More Songs... gets my vote.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

Remain In Light, of course. But I've always loved Bright Red, too.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

The Q/A Devo album is the winner.

zeus, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

This is very much Remain in Light

Joe, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

no No New York, no surprise

dad a, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

It doesn't have melody.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

i think eno did more on the lamb than just the waiting room; for instance, there is something about 'grand parade' that sounds like him (but really only that song). I've never seen anything definitive though.

akm, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

If memory serves, he also only produced the opening track on Shleep. And this list doesn't include any of the stuff he did for Obscure, the records he did with Jon Hassell, or about a billion other things he produced.

With that in mind, I won't bother voting.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't he produce all his own albums as well?

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

More Songs About Buildings and Food, just to be different.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

I thought Eno did the second Devo album as well? I like that one just a bit more than the debut better, and would've voted for it. Otherwise, it's almost inevitable: Remain In Light.

I'm drawing an imaginary line in my head between true Eno productions and Eno/Lanois co-productions which I basically hate.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7151346.stm
Mr Clegg was joined on his first day in the job by musician Brian Eno, whom he has brought in as an adviser on how to "reach out beyond Westminster to people who don't get a say in politics".

zappi, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Low, Heroes... where the fuck is Lodger?

Davey D, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

all he did was let peter sing through his synths on grand parade of lifeless packaging.

chaki, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

I went with Fear of Music. You can hear the beginnings of the direction they were about to go on "More Songs...", but I think Eno really drew out the darkness on Fear of Music.

Z S, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Devo, though Geir's presumptions and omissions fuck this poll up from the start.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Low, Heroes... where the fuck is Lodger?

Eno wasn't around for "Lodger" at all, was he?

Other than that, I have just used Wikipedia's list of albums produced by Eno, and the omissions here are Wikipedia's omissions. Those Jon Hassel ones were also credited to Eno though, thus counting as Eno albums.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

FIVE james albums?

sheesh

pc user, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

remain in light from this list

souvlaki is good, although he was co-producer or some shit.

pc user, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

FIVE james albums?

Eno was seemingly less in demand as a producer by the 90s.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

i kinda think momus thinks he's eno

pc user, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

being all interested in ideas and such

pc user, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Eno wasn't around for "Lodger" at all, was he?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Trilogy

Davey D, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

some really, really awful records there. di'in he do that krautrock lp? harmonium or s.thing? even if he didn't, it's got to be a better vote than u cocking 2. i vote 'fear of music'.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Eno wasn't around for "Lodger" at all, was he?

He's responsible for the "cricket menace" at the very least!

I voted for "Outside."

novaheat, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

you crazy

pc user, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

This poll is a joke.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

I've got to go with Q:Are We Not Men? simply for the fact that it's an inarguably better album than ANYTHING ELSE ON THE LIST. That said, Devo hated working with Eno and I believe it was mutual.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

And I don't believe Eno produced the No New York album so much as culled it together, but I might be wrong.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

I think Eno is gonna produce the new Coldplay album. Also, Robert Wyatt - Comicopera... I'm sure he had a hand in that.

I don't like this poll. Genesis wins outright for me.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

if you're going to do this, do it right and start a new thread

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Brian+Eno

& chronological order would help to illustrate the things

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

Those are Eno albums, not albums produced by Eno. There isn't one single album in this poll credited to Eno as an artist. Not even "Low" and "Heroes" were.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

I was wrong. Robert Wyatt did produce comicopera. Maybe this list is justified.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I know I left out the "No New York" album because it seemed more like a compilation. Other than that I have included every single album listed in that Wikipedia article. Plus a few others where he were around, and where he is credited although neither as artist nor producer.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

Those are Eno albums, not albums produced by Eno. There isn't one single album in this poll credited to Eno as an artist. Not even "Low" and "Heroes" were.

Gear, his production list is on that page if you scroll down just a little bit

this is the actual list, discogs did miss one or two. I omitted albums where he only produced one or two tracks, and omitted Passengers because he's a member of the group.

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

+ Paul Simon - Surprise

anyone see anything I missed, or if that's it, start a new poll -- that's not a bad list

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's so funny he produced all that stuff for James.

Abbott, Thursday, 20 December 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

I guess him producing the next Coldplay is old news. But, damn do I hope he edits coldplay out.

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 20 December 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

I instantly missed No New York too, but I'd still vote for DEVO over that or anything else (Harold Budd being second).

Eno did not produce the 2nd Devo record even though it is arguably the superior album.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 20 December 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

I always think of their first two albums as a whole...generally listen to them both when I listen to either.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 20 December 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm...AMG credits both Eno and the band themselves with production on that 2nd Devo album. But they're not infallible.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 20 December 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

("They" being AMG, just to clarify)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 20 December 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

Either Ultravox! or The Sinking Of The Titanic

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 20 December 2007 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, forgot "Sinking of the Titanic". Out of the Geir's list of albums, some of which Eno didn't actually produced, prob'ly "Fear of Music".

Eno wasn't around for "Lodger" at all, was he?

He (co-)wrote more songs on it than on either "Low" or Heroes"!

Tom D., Thursday, 20 December 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

Oh can I vote for "Double Exposure" by Television?

No?

OK, bye.

Mark G, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm...AMG credits both Eno and the band themselves with production on that 2nd Devo album. But they're not infallible.

AMG is wrong, but discogs and wikipedia have the correct production credit

Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 December 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

Milton, you're missing several Hassell records in there.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 20 December 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I missed Power Spot & Michael Brook's Hybrid & probably a few other things, what other Hassell?

Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 December 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

I'd thought Cities but it wasn't that one. It's The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 20 December 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

you're right -- slipped my mind because it's a live album, but that's a great one

Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 December 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

David Bowie - 1. Outside - The Nathan Adler Diaries: A Hyper Cycle
is this really the name of this song/LP, and if so, can somebody please direct me to the ILM thread wherein it is deservedly ridiculed?

henry s, Thursday, 20 December 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Fear of Music

dan selzer, Thursday, 20 December 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

Slowdive!

Pillbox, Thursday, 20 December 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

XXP I believe "Outside" was supposed to be the beginning of a series of albums. This is why it is called "1.Outside" rather than "Outside".

A good thing he did't continue though. "Outside" was an interesting experiment that worked in part and might have worked even better on a 40 minut album rather than an 80 minute one. I cannot say I would have died for a sequel though.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 20 December 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

I was relying on the fact that DEVO have been one of my favorite bands since childhood. I don't need AMG to know that they never wanted to work with Eno again after he helped them get their name out there.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 20 December 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Outside is frustrating in that ithas several of bowie's best songs of later years on it ('oxford town', 'strangers when we meet', 'i'm deranged', 'architects' eyes') and a whole bunch of annoying shit

akm, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

Hyper Cycle!

akm, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

Outside has remained one of my favorite Bowie albums... always thought that it had more of a Young Gods sound than the NIN rip-off it was panned as.

Never really thought much on the album was "annoying." I guess the "Segue" parts were a bit jarring at first, but I've heard them so many times and they're all so short that I barely even notice them anymore. There's some funny little lines in there, too... ("And I've been dreaming of sleeeeeeeep. And ape men with metal parts.")

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I sorely regret that he never finished the whole project. It's nice to hear Joey Barron and Mike Garson on there, too.

novaheat, Friday, 21 December 2007 06:14 (eighteen years ago)

holy cow, more stories...

strgn, Friday, 21 December 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

I also read somewhere that Eno gave out "Oblique Strategies"-style cards to each of the musicians that instructed them to play in a certain style. I'm convinced that it was because of this that "Outside" is mostly unmarred by Reeves Gabriels' usually unpleasant-sounding guitar.

novaheat, Friday, 21 December 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

novaheat OTM -- Outside is nearly brilliant.

Automatic thread bump. I refused to vote.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

ha ha ha, i knew i would be the only one who voted for Harold Budd.

the table is the table, Friday, 28 December 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

seven months pass...

i guess this shouldn't count because it's from 81, but i found an afrofunk LP yesterday by a group called Edikanfo produced by Eno. i haven't listened to the whole thing yet but it's pretty amazing. apparently there's not much eno involvement besides engineering it properly.
