Not playing with a full set of fingers: Django, Iommi, Frodo...and who else?

A guitar player friend of mine just fought a battle against an evil table saw. He won, the saw's out on the street, but he took some damage.

Now he's studying Django Reinhardt's technique, and tracking down Tony Iommi's prosthetic clinic in the UK. I want to cheer him up with a pile of records by other musicians whose fingers can be counted on less than ten fingers.

Whatchoo got?

Ian Christe, Friday, 21 December 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Jerry Garcia, if you consider him a musician.

Oilyrags, Friday, 21 December 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

(The correct answer is no)

Oilyrags, Friday, 21 December 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

Jaki Byard, though, I believe had only three on his left hand, and he was a badass.

Several actors/politicos/etc. on this list (the only musicians who made it are Garica, Iommi, and Reinhardt):

I once encountered a death metal band with a one-armed singer guitarist in Missoula called Muhamuwaldi. They were amazing.

My friend Jeff was the drummer for a pop-metal band called Alloy, their bassist/vocalist had half an arm. They called it "The Club," he used to totally wail on his bass.

The singer of (Klingon death metal act) Stovokor is missing a hand too.

Russ Conway.

Did the Jaki Byard suicide/murder case ever get solved?

Moulty of The Barbarians! There's even a song about it!

"Jerry Garcia, if you consider him a musician."

Single worst post on ILM ever. Guy was a genius.

Difference is, his injury was on his picking hand Iommi on the frets. They are two of my favorite guitarists, love both of them.

One of the few MASH episodes where Winchester comes off like an OK guy turns on Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, a piece written for Paul Wittgenstein, Ludwig's older brother, who lost his right arm in World War One. Hindemith, Strauss, Britten, and Prokofiev all wrote for him. Lots on Paul Wittgenstein and left-handed piano playing here.

Other left-handed piano pieces recommended here include the Godowsky Paraphrases on Chopin Etudes, and Bach’s Violin Chaconne arranged by Brahms.

Jerry Garcia was a musician's musician.

oh and does Mordecai Brown count?

Saxby D. Elder, Friday, 21 December 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Too bad he wasn't a LISTENER'S musician!

(I'll stop now if you will)

Do Mark Pauline's Survival Research Laboratories machines count as musical instruments?

I'm surprised you don't hear of any drummers missing fingers, you could probably get by without a full set (depending on which ones).

Jerry Garcia was an eater's eater

Glass Harp guitarist Phil Keaggy lost a finger in an accident.

Yeah, but he was a BANJO player first, and missing your middle finger on your right hand is a bad thing for a banjo player.

He always considered himself a better banjo player than a guitar player. True story.

well, um, there's rick allen of def leppard.

earthless guitarist isaiah mitchell played a fantastic cmj show this year with two (maybe three?) fingers on his picking hand immobilized in giant bandages from a touring accident the day before. not sure what the prognosis was.

Thanks for everything so far, this is great. The Wittgenstein site is amazing. The M*A*S*H episode I'll bet was inspired by Radar, who held a clipboard in most scenes to hide his deformed hand. True!

I've met Iommi a couple times, and usually ask him what I can about Mellotrons, Geezer's exotic wardrobe, and his pre-Sabbath days as a musician. He says the first band he formed when he started playing again after the accident was a short-lived combo with another guitarist missing a couple finger parts. I have no idea what that was called...

Walter Carlos may have his fingers intact, but he cut off something else......

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 22 December 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

Papa Crazee of Oakley Hall & formerly guitarist of Oneida had a saw accident a year or 2 back. His primary instrument might be the organ now, not sure.

Snop Snitchin, Saturday, 22 December 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

& Hound Dog Taylor cut off 2 of his fingers, but still had 10, so they say

Snop Snitchin, Saturday, 22 December 2007 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

chaki - not even with Jerry Garcia's missing finger, chump.

This thread didn't mention legendary folk-rock guitarist Bruce "Mr. Tambourine Man" Langhorne.

Holy shit, I had no idea he only had three fingers. And he had a left hand most pianists would give their right hand for.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 10 January 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to post Moulty but I've been beaten to it. Instead I'll give you Hound Dog Taylor, who had an extra. This of course is no help.

Sorry.
