Houses of the Holy

dlp9001, Saturday, 22 December 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Black and viscous bound to cure blue lethargy.
Sugar-plum petroleum for energy.
Tightrope-balanced payments need a small reprieve
Oh, please believe we want to be
in North Sea
in North Sea Oil.
New-found wealth sits on the shelf of yesterday.
Hot-air balloon inflation soon will make you pay.
Riggers rig and diggers dig their shallow grave.
But we'll be saved and what we crave
is North Sea
is North Sea Oil.

Easily "Night At The Opera".

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 22 December 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Hah! I knew you'd say that, Geir.

Ioannis, Saturday, 22 December 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

awful list

stephen, Saturday, 22 December 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

Awesome list!

dlp9001, Saturday, 22 December 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, srsly.

That's a good first 50 albums for 1977!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Well, it's really all the albums I owned between Dec. '77 and Dec. '79; two years of sonic bliss for this then 13 - 15-year-old (only exception being a K-TEL movie soundtrack comp. featuring the themes from Star Wars, The Deep, etc.).

Ioannis, Sunday, 23 December 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

Voted Hot Rocks but tough call.

also, ban stephen.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

my brother owned every one of those albums back then too. i don't know which is my fave. back then probably zep 2 or zep 4. now probably zep 3.

wait, no, back then hot rocks was probably my fave out of those.

the only who album i owned in 1979 was odds & sods. my bro had all the rest.

scott seward, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

my 77 to 79 album list would be insane. it would be all judas priest, roadmaster, trooper, starz, derek & the dominos, peaches & herb, black sabbath, beatles, blondie, and comedy records.

scott seward, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

one of my very favorite records from 1979:

i think my dad bought it for me.

scott seward, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

Hah! I knew you'd say that, Geir.

Might have been "Hey Jude" too but I am not certain exactly which songs were on that compilation.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 23 December 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

my 77 to 79 album list would be insane. it would be all judas priest, roadmaster, trooper, starz, derek & the dominos, peaches & herb, black sabbath, beatles, blondie, and comedy records.

That would be awesome, Scott! You should totally base a poll thread on those selections if you have a list handy.

Ioannis, Sunday, 23 December 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

houses of the holy, but this is a solid list all-around!

69, Sunday, 23 December 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Here's the track list for Hey Jude, Geir:

Side one
"Can't Buy Me Love" (1964) – 2:19
"I Should Have Known Better" (1964) – 2:39
"Paperback Writer" (1966) – 2:14
"Rain" (1966) – 2:58
"Lady Madonna" (1968) – 2:14
"Revolution" (1968) – 3:21

Side two
"Hey Jude" (1968) – 7:06
"Old Brown Shoe" (1969) (Harrison) – 3:16
"Don't Let Me Down" (1969) – 3:30
"The Ballad of John and Yoko" (1969) – 2:55

Ioannis, Sunday, 23 December 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

I miss a few things about the 60s and 70s, but not the short running times of albums.

I think I'll vote for Presence.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 23 December 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, that's what I miss the most; 30 to 40 minute album lengths are almost always preferable to longer running times.

It's scary to see how many of these I owned. (In some cases, still own, since I'd rather have it as a memento than the 10 cents it might bring...)

But Gene Simmons, solo, now that's the lowest rung. I remember buying that one FIRST. I believe it was $5.49 at the store that I pre-ordered it from and they got it the same day as the big record store in the center of town who were selling it for $4.99 and I felt really ripped off...then I listened to the album. Then I understood the true meaning of "ripped off."

smurfherder, Saturday, 29 December 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that Gene record was what convinced this one-time fanatic to finally jump ship on KISS once and for all. Never did hear the Paul and Chris albums, but I remember Ace's being pretty decent.

Ioannis, Saturday, 29 December 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

I actually like the Paul album. I don't know where it plays in the consensus, but it's what Kiss probably should have put out in place of most of Dynasty...the Criss album is like something someone's dad who was a big '50s fan might put out given the chance to work with people who owned expensive recording equipment. I can't say I like it, but I like the IDEA of it.

smurfherder, Saturday, 29 December 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

Hah - by Chris I meant Peter, of course (did I actually think the guy was called Chris Peters?).

One of these days I'll actually listen to those other two solo albums, plus Dynasty and a few others maybe.

Ioannis, Saturday, 29 December 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 30 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Boy, I'd have to include a plethora of out-of-print REO Speedwagon LPs, Joe Walsh, James Gang w/o Joe Walsh, Heavy Metal Kids, Foghat, the "Mott" records, Mick Ronson solo albums, the albums in which we stupidly and optimistically were waiting for Alice Cooper to get back with old gang, Pat Travers, Robin Trower.

It's kind of touching Deep Purple's Purple Passages, the early stuff without Gillan, be in there. Not enough Nuge, though. The Nuge was the biggest draw in American arenas for most of the Seventies post-Free for All.

Gorge, Sunday, 30 December 2007 00:22 (seventeen years ago)

About half - perhaps even more - of my first (casettes btw) were sung in Norwegian rather than English.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 December 2007 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

Ioannis, who you again? (BTW I voted for "A Night at the Opera" too.)

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 30 December 2007 06:17 (seventeen years ago)

I'm the poster formally known as jn$ot, Matt. Just don't call me Yanni, dammit!

George - You're probably a couple of years older than me (I turned 15 near the very end of the '70s), thus your inclusion of a bunch of artists me and my friends would have likely laughed at back then. I couldn't tell ya why I didn't get into Foghat (and AC/DC and Van Halen!) at the time, though. I think they annoyed me for some reason (as did Rush). And yeah, yer right, the Nuge was pretty much god back then; caught him live in 1980 (I think)--on a bill that also featured Humble Pie, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, and Angel.

Geir - Don't tell me you were actually listening to (gasp; horror!!) Norwegian folk music back in the day!

Also: hahaha--cassettes. I was a total vinyl snob.

Ioannis, Sunday, 30 December 2007 08:22 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, and, Matt, I would have thought you'd have picked Physical Graffiti--world music influences after all (sorta)!

Ioannis, Sunday, 30 December 2007 08:34 (seventeen years ago)

I considered it...but world music isn't my only favorite kind of music y'know. If Physical Graffiti had "I'm in Love With My Car" on it, THINGS MIGHT HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT.

Hey jn$ot/Ioannis/whoever the heck you are, hit me up at expresso2222/gmail, got a proposition for you (no pomo)

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 30 December 2007 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

Geir - Don't tell me you were actually listening to (gasp; horror!!) Norwegian folk music back in the day!

Nope. Always hated that, even as a kid. :)
This was Norwegian language pop music.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 December 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

Ok, e-mail sent to yer gmail addy, Matt.

Ioannis, Sunday, 30 December 2007 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

That's funny, Geir. I, on the other hand, like a lot of Greek folk music but never could stand most of the pop stuff.

Ioannis, Sunday, 30 December 2007 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

The only case where I like the traditional (classic rather than folk) music better than the pop music would be China. Those ultra-naff MOR-pop songs sung in Chinese that you tend to hear in Chinese restaurants these days are absolutely dreadful.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 December 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Well yeah, I suppose you may be right there. But Chinese classical/folk music is pretty amazing stuff. Not that I've heard all that much of it, mind you, I'm simply jusdging from what little I know about it.

Ioannis, Sunday, 30 December 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

A weird thing about the Asian cultures is that apparently they have no folk music at all. The music known as "ethnic" Chinese or Indian/Pakistani/Arabian music is actually classical, and has more in common with European classical music than with European folk music.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 December 2007 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 31 December 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Interesting: Zep rules with 18 votes split among 5 albums, but the Stones take the poll with their 8 for 1--surprisingly decent voter turnout, too. Now if only the jokerz who voted for the KISS solo records would out themselves all would be well.
