I'M READING JAPROCK SAMPLER

and downloading a whole bunch of records! ...and I want to talk about them/it. I never read Krautrocksampler, so this is really quite a treat for me. I'm just getting to the Flower Travellin' Band bits, who I've revisited with slightly different ears, though I'd pretty much still rather just listen to Sabbath. I was also motivated to DL some Rallizes stuff I hadn't heard, which was a great fucking idea, because it's impossible to have too much of them. The best, though, was hearing Love Live Life +1's Love Will Make a Better You, which is everything Cope says it is -- a wild combination of the best bits (as a few Japanese weirdos would have it) of soul, noise rock and free jazz, all with great playing. I can't recommend this enough, and I'm amped about hearing the rest of the "Super Sessions" stuff that cope recommends.

One figure I'm very interested in hearing, of whom I had no previous notion, is Toshi Ichiyanagi. His Cage inspired stuff seems interesting, but the stories about his coming into psychedelia are amazing, and I would love to hear others' opinions of his work + recommendations. It's funny how Yoko Ono even comes off as kind of a joke from a less Beatles-centric perspective, as in the anecdote about Ichiyanagi, Cage and her touring Japan.

also, for the record, I love Yoko's first two records, but Cope's description of her as "not known so much for her art as her ability to get things done" (not an exact quote) is the angle I'm referring to.

Re: Yoko --

I find it strange that she would come off as a "joke." I read that one bio of John Lennon "The Lives of John Lennon" or whatever where the author clearly HATED Yoko, but just in describing the details of what she did, she sounded awesome. I love Cut Piece!
