They've been around all the while, watching, waiting...

dave q, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who else had a 100% hit rate for their first THREE albums? Talking Heads? Roxy Music? I'm going to listen to it 600 more times now. More later. Heh.

dave q, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For me anyway the mark of a great album is when absolutely anything can happen at any moment, but when 'anything' does, it sounds like the only logical thing that COULD have happened. Something veers too much toward the former, it's 'interesting', too much to the latter and its' 'formula', but strike the balance and it's a keeper! They're fucking with the balance waaaay more than previous, but every time something jars and threatens the whole taut tightrope (the "iguana" reference), it just ratchets up the tension even more! Also, the rhythms on this are amazing. Brutalist syncopation - it can be done. Simple without EVER being simplistic like everything that any concatenation of people using the collective 'Breeders' designation have done! Another definition of great album is when you have no idea what is driving these people to make the music and words they do, but it's pleasurable enough listening to it repeatedly that you don't mind. Also "Full on Idle" is my fave tune of recentness. (Any Cheap Trick fans think it's a cross between "Elo Kiddies" and "I Want You To Want Me"? That isn't what makes it great though - that would be how the vocal doubles for one word at the end of the third line every verse. Stuff like that! Atmosphere-building without being 'atmospheric'. Now I don't have to buy another guitar-rock CD for another eight years or however long it takes them to make another one!

dave q, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stop making me want to buy this! I already filled my guitar rock quota!

Keiko, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've only heard the 'Off You' ep. It's excellent. Kelly Deal's voice is fucked. Wrecked, wracked, cracked. Slurred and blurred; tired and emotional. It's wonderful. The vocal performance in 'Off You' is one of the most affecting I've heard this year. The Breeders are cool.

DavidM, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where'd you get this, anyhow? Advance copy? Download? If the latter, where?

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah dave u r making me jealous

Ron, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's on audiogalaxy.

toby, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You must be putting us on. I downloaded it a couple of days ago, and it just sounded pathetic. Like what you'd expect from a fat has-been. I didn't listen very closely, because it didn't seem to merit it. You guys make it sound like another Big Star 3rd.

Curt, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't worked out yet why people like the first two Breeders records to be honest. (Actually this is a lie - I like Last Splash, especially when it gets pretty).

Tom, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

listening to "last splash" right now! 15th best single of the 90s! rest = eh.

jess, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i never worked out why ppl liked big star

the breeders are ace and kelley deal fancies me

mark s, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

people like big star for the same reason they like wilco, replacements, bob dylan (HAR HAR): they are dull and worthy and comfortable like someones stank converse all star.

jess, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

last splash is almost a perfect album... i am downloading title tk right now and the first thing that's puzzling me is why 'full on idle' is even on there?? we wait for 7 years since the amps record and we gotta waste 1 of the precious 12 spots on an old song?? i think i like the amps version a little better. but i am so very happy to have new kim deal!!

Ron, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh and music should be "uncomfortable" Jess? The problem is that your favourite records whoever they're by are not dull/worthy/comfortable only if you're perpetually imagining a crowd of shrieking not-yous reacting against them. (This is obviously a favoured mode of listening for lots of people mind you.)

Classing Dylan with Wilco (or even Big Star) is like classing Kirk DeGiorgio with Basement Jaxx (i.e. more OTM than his fans would like to admit but still not that close).

Tom, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still haven't "worked out why" people even bother to make music I don't like. I mean, what's the point in that?

Curt, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

music should hurt, tom.

(of course it shouldnt, but you know damn well what i mean.)

classing twerk degeorgio with basement jaxx is a lot better than classing him with nasenblauten! i.e. classing wilco with dylan a lot better than classing him with system of a down! (er, maybe not...)

jess, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just to piss you off. Personally, like. They do it to me, too. Bastards.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well that would explain why Dave Q encourages them.

Curt, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BTW I got it at Sister Ray on Berwick St

dave q, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can someone give me the track listing?

michael bourke, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Check here for zee tracklist.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As I said a couple of months ago when I got the promo, this album is pretty boring. Although I think I liked it more then than I do now. I don't remember the last time I made it through the whole thing. Track 3 is nice though.

Yancey, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heard part of it in the rekkid store the other day, and it sounded dead dull...downloaded it via Audiogalaxy, too, but somehow doubt the files will stick around very long on my machine.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am scared that it is actually a bit on the dull side :-(

Ron, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Voted for Sinister Foxx but now that I'm listening I should have voted for Huffer. Fantastic album.
