Remember Sunscreem?

I pulled O3 out of the CD rack and played it while showering this morning. It's probably the first time I've played it in about 11 years; it's certainly the first time I paid attention to the lyrics to "Love You More", which is apparently a euphoric house song about getting raped by your father. (!) Most of the songs are sunny, loved-up mid-90s anthems but lyrically, they seem to have been in a very dark, unhappy place on this album (see also "Pressure" and the cover of "Broken English"). According to Wikipedia, they had four other albums. (!!) Anyone ever hear anything off of them?

I misread the thread title and thought this was a Baz Luhrmann thread.

haha, fact: Sunscreem were the first band I ever saw live twice (both times opening for other bands)

I think I heard parts of their second, and maybe their third album, but I had no idea they had five in total!

I remember my surprise at hearing "Love You More" played on an episode of Beverly Hills 90210!

"Love You More" cracked the Billboard Top 40! Sometimes I miss the 90s.

HI DERE, Sunday, 23 December 2007 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

Had that first album for a bit. There's a subgenre here worth thinking about (ranging from One Dove to Republica and beyond...Opus III as well)

Curtis, me too. I was all excited about the content of the thread. Now I'm like "?"

There's a subgenre here worth thinking about

More bands in this "subgenre":

latter-day 808 State ("Gorgeous" and everything after it)
the first Electronic album

present day: Of Montreal? (the combination of bouncy, euphoric beats + off-kilter, twisted lyrics)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 23 December 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

The bands in this "sub-genre" are really good, actually!

(maybe not Republica ...)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 23 December 2007 09:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not mad at Republica. That first album is pretty okay!

i don't understand how this song is about being raped by your father but maybe I'm missing something

akm, Sunday, 23 December 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

'Perfect Motion' was alright. Some of the stuff on Juliet's album from 2 years ago reminded me of Sunscreem esp. 'Ride The Pain' (nothing like the great 'Avalon' tho).

I remember "Love U More" being played to death on nyc radio when it first came out. I had the cassingle, and later the CD single. A few years ago I picked up the 12" for 50 cents. Then I even attempted to do a deep housey remix of it. So I guess I kind of liked it...

We can turn wine into water
As fathers rape their daughters
But you know you can never make me love you more

add Sean Mclusky's first adventures in the pop world with the dance-pop of If. early 12" were on the same tip as sunscreem - and some of the remixes still sound great.
the album was shyte though.
another entry : Sunsonic
an album i still play often as its bloody great !

akm, there's also the line about "my sex hung, drawn and quartered" that makes this not a very nice song lyrically.

There's another song on the first album that seems to be about Marilyn Monroe's murder called "Idaho" that's pretty good

five years pass...

Friend mentioned listening to "Love U More" today and instant flashback once again.
