Billy Dods, Sunday, 23 December 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Can I ask questions about it here or would that spoil it?

Pretty sure I've got 8, can't place the dude kneeling down.

The blue-green world is drenched with horse gore, Sunday, 23 December 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

lol Okay he was who I thought. Didn't recognise him. Knew the other 8.

All of them! What, did you think I'd never seen the cover of Band on the Run before?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 06:59 (sixteen years ago)

Paul

Bee OK, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

All of them. Then again you would have to have been in the UK back in the 70s to recognise the likes of Clement Freud and Kenny Lynch...

Lincolnshire, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 09:26 (sixteen years ago)

If I would just see the image, I'd recognize 0 of them. But since the URL says it's a Wings record, I assume Paul McCartney must be one of them.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 10:33 (sixteen years ago)

Hold on, is the dude on the far right Kid Coconut?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 10:34 (sixteen years ago)

I got 6 out of 9. I don't recognise the guy in front of Clement Freud, or the guy kneeling, or the guy on the far right. Although I think he's a boxer?

snoball, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 10:43 (sixteen years ago)

Yes he was.

Tell me "guy in front of Clement Freud" was an unintentional lol too please.

A bright pair of newcomers called BROS (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:01 (sixteen years ago)

Holy shit, I thought one of them looked like Christopher Lee, but I didn't realize it actually is him! So it's not just musicians who are on the cover?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

As they say in Finland, he who thinks like turtle IS turtle!!

Completely unintentional. I just checked on Wikipedia and damn am I embarrassed!

snoball, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:21 (sixteen years ago)

(xxpost) There are actually only three musicians on the cover, or only two if you're feeling mean...

snoball, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

Then again, Christopher Lee has sung on many records, and I'm sure he's actually a better singer than McCartney.

(xpost) I'm pretty sure that even I'm a better singer than Linda McCartney.

snoball, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

I was talking about Paul McCartney, what does Linda have to do with this?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

WITH A RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT LEFT YOU'RE TOOTHLESS
THEN YOU SAY GODDAMN THEY CHALLOPS

I Was a Teenage Armchair Hongro Fan (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

Goddamn, those Finnish ILMers are at it again, I wonder who they challoped tonight?

seven years pass...

Just bought this as a present for someone and, looking at the sleeve, it confirms something that I've always thought: *Michael Parkinson almost ruins it. WTF is he doing? Everyone else is getting totally in character - look at Denny Laine - and he's standing there with a slight smirk on his face, not looking at the camera and, for no apparent reason, pointing. I always thought he was crap and this helps to confirm it. Oh, and on first glance I thought Linda was Freddie Starr!

(*that's the guy on the far left, for those (happily) unfamiliar with him)

(SNIFFING AND INDISTINCT SOBBING) (Tom D.), Friday, 7 October 2016 13:10 (nine years ago)

maybe he's pointing a gun at whoever is making them -- the band -- go on the run.

Dominique, Friday, 7 October 2016 13:50 (nine years ago)

There's a making-of documentary on Youtube (not great overall) that gets into the cover shoot. Apparently the photographer ran into some technical trouble, including just not having enough light to actually take the shot without it being a fairly long exposure - maybe a full second or so. Which is actually pretty tough when you're trying to get nine people to stand still while mugging in weird poses. I suspect he had trouble finding one frame where nobody's hands or faces blurred, nobody blinked, etc. Now for all I know the gun-pointing thing was in all the shots and everybody loved it but I can easily imagine it was a trade-off with something else.

IIRC he also had the wrong kind of film for the kind of lights he was using, but thankfully Paul or somebody liked the look of the colors that resulted.

DOCTOR CAISNO, BYCREATIVELABBUS (Doctor Casino), Friday, 7 October 2016 13:54 (nine years ago)

the photographer writes about it on his blog here: https://clivearrowsmith.org/2014/01/13/band-on-the-run-the-great-wrong-film-debacle/
