Raster Noton S/D RFI

I also really like the whole 20 to 2000 series (was just listening to the Ryoji Ikeda this afternoon). The other early Alva Noto record, forget what its called... Opto? Yeah, that's it. William Basinski's The River is my favorite release of his. Mika Vainio is always good and his Ought stuff (can't do that slashed-O thing, too lazy to look up ASCII) beats even Pan Sonic for me. However, I have not heard his 2 Raster releases. Senking is also one that I like.

Bender isn't Senking. you're thinking of Karaoke Kalk's Jens Massel (AKA Fumble, Kandis). on his own, Bender is Byetone. he's also a member of Rastermusik collectives Signal and Produkt.

Well, that's strange because I saw Olaf Bender twice (once as Byetone, then again), the latter time the flyer said Senking. I suppose what actually happened was he couldn't come so they sent Olaf Bender instead.

interesting. as you say, could have just been a substitution. AFAIK, Bender has nothing to do with the Senking project. he isn't even co-credited on any of Senking's RM releases.

Yeah, discogs confirms this as well. Strange, I've been udner the impression that bender=Senking since June.

Well either way, the Raster-Noton gang played here last night. They must have a thing for Toronto, because in addition to this, over the last 2 years Frank has has played here once, and Olaf twice, not to mention RN had a public art installation for this art thing last September. Either way, I was treated (and it indeed was a treat) to sets by Byetone, Frank, and Alva Noto, and then los tres hombres as Signal, complete with matching white track jackets.

The point being it was, whew, fantastic. I mean Alva Noto is Alva Noto, but Byetone really surprised me, and Frank as well, playing what I imagine is stuff off Rhythm. And wow, seeing them live is a whole other experience. Just huge, clean sound that really moves you. Anyone who claims this music is too distant and detached clearly hasn't had their innards pureed by basslines so low you can feel them easier than you can hear them. In a way it's unfortunate because that really visceral, really powerful impact is lost when listening at home. I could easily imagine even a pop oriented listener really enjoying a Frank Bretschneider set; the sparsity of the compostion is filled in with visceral power. Nevertheless, Amazing event that was, I'll have to buy the signal album sometime in the new several weeks or something.

Oh, and great visuals as well, especially Frank's.

It's amazing how much love that Kangding Ray record gets proportional to the amount of hatred clicks n cuts IDM gets, given the overlapping of the two.

Alva Noto's <em>Xerrox Vol. 2</em> is really nice in a pop ambient sort of way.

the alva noto/ryuichi sakamoto utp_ release was very cool. i like their stuff together a bunch. its the kind of thing you really have to immerse yourself in. which is fine by me cuz i hate the real world. comes with a cool dvd too.

SND is good from what I've heard. This is good too. I think it's one of Raster-Noton's more accessible works?

SND is like the absolute definition of "severe" (xp). Haven't heard anything in a while, are they much different than the sound on Stdio?

NHK - Unununium (R-N 111) is by far my favourite release on rn and hasn't be mentioned, so there

not too dissimilar from the uptempo tracks on 'kesto'

This is the most enjoyable of the Raster-Noton I've been exposed too (Noto, SND, Byetone, Senking, Bretschneider, etc). It's er, fun to listen to very loud.

Alva Noto's Xerrox series is extremely ood when you are in the mood for very deep ambient.
