Gotta be either Angel Dust or California; I'm repping for the latter.

For me, "California" wins, though every other Bungle album as well as "Fantomas," "Director's Cut," and "Suspended Animation" all could be contenders, depending on mood. I like the live Painkiller album he's on, as well as the "Moonchild" stuff he's done with Zorn lately, too.

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

haven't heard any bungle records so 'angel dust' for me - easy.

sam500, Monday, 24 December 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

Oops, missed off the first Tomahawk album.

chap, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

Disco Volante easy. he has not done anything as good since.

chaki, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

best + mike patton = does not compute

stephen, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

j/k, he's not so bad, though i don't own a single one of these. voted for Disco Volante 'cause it's the only one i wouldn't mind hearing at the moment.

stephen, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

Someone ought to beat him up for putting out "Peeping Tom," though.

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

Although I will admit I enjoyed playing it at the record store and watching baby boomers get all confused when they heard Norah Jones say "motherfucker."

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

I have a soft spot for California because I saw that tour, and because it was the last record that will ever be made with three analog 24-track tape machines strung together.

No one else would be crazy enough to do that without Pro-Tools.

Nate Carson, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

The first Fantomas record is a godsend.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

the ones after are much better.

chaki, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

peeping tom is awful.

chaki, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

the ones after are much better.

"Director's Cut" is pretty great -- I'm not sure if it's "better" than S/T, but it's damned good in any case. "Delerium Cordia" is a disaster, but they redeemed themselves with "Suspended Animation."

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

california might be the only tolerable thing he's ever been a part of and that's only in spite of his numerous attempts to ruin the album via his wacky brand of 'creativity'

I don't think it's quite as elaborate as "California," but Secret Chiefs 3's "Book of Horizons" goes pretty crazy with the overdubs. I think Trey Spruance has something of a fetish for the studio process. More power to him, as far as I'm concerned.

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

Cat was playing with my dreadlock.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:45 (eighteen years ago)

There are at least a couple missing (Maldoror - She; General Patton Vs. the X-Ecutioners), but I'd still go for Disco Volante.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 24 December 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Neither of those albums is all that great, imo. The Maldoror album, in particular, takes the worst elements of both Merzbow and Mike Patton and mashes them together in a relatively bland noise-ish affair. I've got the General Patton thing laying around here somewhere, but I think I've only listened to it once...

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

irony is a dead scene is the best thing mike patton or dep have done
mr bungle is tight too though

kl0pper, Monday, 24 December 2007 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

I do like that Dillenger Escape Plan EP... but I can't imagine Patton really going much further in that direction.

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 08:45 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, I think his most shining achievement ever is "Lookaway" off Sepultura Roots but that wasn't an option...

Nate Carson, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

"Delerium Cordia" is a disaster

I voted for this! Even though it's all ripped off Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore.

Matt #2, Monday, 24 December 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

tossup between either California or Disco Volante

latebloomer, Monday, 24 December 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

Someone ought to beat him up for putting out "Peeping Tom," though.

It's got three or four decent tracks on it, and I like what he's trying to do with the project. It falls flat for most of the album though.

Anyone properly checked out his solo albums? I gave them a cursory listen a few years ago and thought they seemed pretty wanky.

chap, Monday, 24 December 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

the guy is a hack

chaki, Monday, 24 December 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

A few good albums up there and a few unlistenable, but Angel Dust is untouchable forevah.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 24 December 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard most of this stuff save the FNM material-- and since there are already voters for Angel Dust, I will rep for King for a Day.

Sparkle Motion, Monday, 24 December 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Since the solo album that's just voice isn't on the list, I voted Angel Dust

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 24 December 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

Whoops, there it is. Oh well.

Anyone properly checked out his solo albums? I gave them a cursory listen a few years ago and thought they seemed pretty wanky.

They are. "Pranzo Oltranzista" is the more interesting of the two, by far. Seems to me that there were some moments where John Zorn lent a bit of sax that were rather nice. "Adult Themes for Voice" seemed cool when I was a freshman in college, but I don't think I've listened to it since then.

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

And I really need to learn to use that "Convert HTML..." button...

novaheat, Monday, 24 December 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

A few days ago it would have been Disco Volante, no question, but I decided to give California a real go and it's doing very, very well. Consequently, both records are receiving extensive rotation. At this very moment I can't actually decide. I'll probably wind up going for DV on account of the fact it has the more spectacular music, but California's whole vibe is coherently astounding, and wonderfully warped. "Pink Cigarette" is the simplest song Mr. Bungle did, but it's one of my very favourites. It alone could influence my vote.

Just got offed, Friday, 28 December 2007 08:26 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, as fucked up and eviscerated as DV is, I kinda side with California being a bit more "listen-able" and conceptually sound.

Nate Carson, Friday, 28 December 2007 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

another vote for angel dust here. i like him best when he is a pop singer. real thing, king for a day, california, and director's cut are all up there for me.

rockapads, Friday, 28 December 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if Album of the Year will have any takers. It's underrated, more focused and well-produced than King For a Day... (though the high points on KFAD are higher).

chap, Friday, 28 December 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

SHIT, I voted California on instinct and remembered Angel Dust as I was voting. California is just so freaking listenable; Angel Dust however has always been there for me.

nickalicious, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

King For A Day is so underrated

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 28 December 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I'll have to say that since hardbody ILX snobs shit on this guy so much for his hit-or-miss experimental stuff, it's really easy to miss the times he hits.

The two disc Hemopheliac album with Zorn and Ikue Mori (not listed) is sublime avant-heavy improv (with the exception of the song where Patton does the sex noizes) that gets mucho repeat plays for me. Adult Themes For Voice is unique and fun. And his Maldoror album with Merzbow is pretty hot too.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 28 December 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

My ex-girlfriend used to play that Lovage album, that was alright.

Disco Volante it is. For my sins.
