I finally got to see him play a few years ago in Japan. It was after his stroke, and he had to be wheeled to the piano, but once he was there it was absolutely spectacular. He was a true giant, and a national treasure.

Oscar Peterson was one of only a few jazz pianists that really caught my classical-obsessed dad's attention, and although that says something bad about my dad, it also says something good about O.P., I think.

Also, because of that one of my first jazz records was an LP of his trio. This one:

wow, we were just listening to him on a mid-50s Lionel Hampton record yesterday. Was loving hearing him humming along in the background ... Will go put him on again now. RIP!

RIP indeed. Amazing to think of him being a contemporary of Nat Cole and all those guys, and having pretty much outlived all of them.

i had no clue this man was a canuk until they were talking about him on the news last night!

RIP. never a fan myself but my dad adored him and saw him live several times. he'll be heartened that so many of THE KIDS on THE INTERNET care about his favourite musician, i guess.

RIP. I never got into him before, maybe I believe some of the negative press about him overplaying, but today I am listening to the WKCR tribute and I'm starting to get it. He played with some of my favorite cats: Ray Brown, George Mraz, Stephane Grappelli, Kenny Clarke. I like the tempo he is playing at on the stuff they are playing right now, a little laid back but swinging.

The man was brilliant.
One of my most highly cherished slabs of wax is one of his first releases on Clef.
Ebay has a "signed" piano that you can have for a cool 95 large.
