i know almost nothing about these guys.
are they the leftfield that time forgot? london's answer to maurizio? a more serious moody boyz?
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)
They felt like a budget Orb at the time but it's been a few years.
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)
they were on infonet - which due to Angular Art ep (david morley/andrea parker) was always a label i regretted not learning more about. their cds are often in the cheap bins, and thats me done for this thread. looking forward to reading more ..

Presence was a good single. Not sure about the rest
― cedar, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)
I think this is the only thing I own today with Bandulu on it. They fit right in with that stuff. It's nice.
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)
I'll give what I have a re-listen when I get home. Which is a good way of saying nothing they've done that I've heard has been particularly memorable, so most likely dud in the eh sense
― El Tomboto, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)
i always see their albums in the used bins and never bite. but i grabbed "cornerstone" - which is not on infonet - and it sounds a heck of a lot like recent black dog (ken downie solo) material on dust science.
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)
oh god I never ventured past music for adverts did he get any better?
― El Tomboto, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)
I only have the one thing on Macro Dub Infection and I don't remember it (I do remember the track before it though.)
― Alex in SF, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)
infonet was NOT a particularly great label btw
this sons of the subway album always looked interesting, though i can't recall right now if it was actually by bandulu or the space djz ... i think the latter ... supposedly it's a drum'n'bass + techno hybrid attempt, but i never heard it in full ..
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)
hmmm ... he's gotten much simpler ... if you can imagine the early BDP crew doing covers of drexciya tracks, that's what it sounds like.
fast 4/4 beat done w/ electro drumkit, filtered to sound fuzzy bassline comes in eerie synth chords come in over that an acidic counter-melody is introduced the eerie synth chords go away everything drops out but the bass and drums everything comes back and the song fades out
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)
I saw them supporting Underworld in 1995 or 1996. My mate was a fan so I had some stuff by them. Not really heard much of them since.
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)
I have their first two albums...and I'll be damned if I can remember anything off either one...probably worth re-investigating, I must have been drawn to something in them...I remember reviews raving about their "pop edge", which I never heard...the early photos of the band seemed to indicate a "Beastie Boys of techno" marketing strategy...
infonet was NOT a particularly great label btw pretty much OTM...Reload doesn't really hold up, either...
― henry s, Friday, 28 December 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)
and it sounds a heck of a lot like recent black dog (ken downie solo) material on dust science.
couple of things. 1 - the new black dog stuff is not Ken Downie solo, there are 3 of them involved in the making of the new music. 2. tis great to see some Dust Science love - definitely becoming a current fave of mine.

so i finally found a used ($1.00) copy of the first album and damn, it's good.
like, really, really good.
like, maybe not *quite* as good as early carl craig but definitely up there with early as one, stasis, kenny larkin, dan curtin, stacey pullen and whoever else falls on the "techno-y, dance-y" side of the polished reflective detroit techno spectrum (across the other side from, say, black dog or b12, who are more reflective and less rhythmically straightforward)
basically it's really great crisp breaks with dusty afro / tribal touches and awesome really deep b12 style synths.

a fair bit of it sounds almost exactly like "the martian" / red planet releases from UR, in fact

or suburban knight
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 14 November 2008 06:59 (seventeen years ago)
I have this the one track that always stood out was Phaze In Remix, which was 10 minutes of a hi hat going through filters and nothing else.
― I am using your worlds, Friday, 14 November 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)
the first album actually includes a remix by carl craig right...?
i've got 'antimatters' somewhere but never got around to listening to it duh.
― sam500, Friday, 14 November 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)
i just realized that jamie bissmire of space djz is the main dude of bandulu. no wonder i always get them confused!
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
thought this was about cornel campbell
― eman, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

This has B.C. stamped all over it, LOVELY!
― eman, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)
Completely flashing back on these guys, weren't they on the dance spinoff of Creation?
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah. Apparently after a while they didn't recieve much support from the label - McGee's attention span probably wandered onto a load of thugs from Manchester :)
― Treblekicker, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)
Although checking Discogs, they did release more than I thought. http://www.discogs.com/label/Infonet
Quite a lot of it was Bandulu though. Space DJz, Thunderground and Sons of Subway are all them.
― Treblekicker, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)
seemed like they were being marketed as the "Beastie Boys of techno" when they were on Infonet...
― henry s, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)
In interviews they played up that they were council estate London lads from the East End if I remember correctly. Not sure if that means Beastie Boys or not but know what you're getting at.

Their 2 tracks on Usability Now are both great. Downward Glanz (Demonz) has a reversed sound that reminds me of another song...maybe Looking From A Hilltop?
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)
I definitely hear a Looking From A Hilltop sample on Downward Glanz, although I've not heard the (Demonz) version.
― I am using your worlds, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)
xpost in their press pics they also looked a bit like the Beasties, lanky "hooligans", sideways ball caps, etc...plus, there were three of them, which was rare at the time (still is, actually) for a techno act...
